After playing a game of this with my Brother in Law over the weekend I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread in praise of that most simple yet brilliant of strategy games, Risk. I own the Classic, LOTR and Star Wars variants. I players the Transformers version once but it was a while ago and I was drunk at the time.

I love it because it's stupidly easy to learn and play yet allows so many possibilities and encourages all sorts of fragile alliances and backstabbing. It's also one of the best introductions to the basics of strategy and wargaming I can think of.

So who else here still plays it, and has anyone ever managed to hold onto Asia?

Favorite boardgame, hands down. Its just hard for me to get a game together. All of my friends love it, but no one is willing to dedicate the time it takes to play an entire game. And the special ops missions suck, so we rarely play.

A gamer I am. Game I must.

Its not right this thread was closed.

That's my favorite game of all time, but unfortunately I don't know anyone else who likes it these days!

And no... Asia is the mirage of power. Just as you grab a hold of it, it slips through your fingers!

When I used to play it a lot, the player that was the strongest early on usually lost- as the other players focused their attention on them. It was usually the second or third strongest player starting out that would end up winning the game

There was also the issue of verbal treaties and whether they were truly binding or not... lots of broken words and hurt feelings in that game, just like real conflicts I would think!

(Okay, not just like it... but as close as you can get in such a simple game )

Risk is a great game and now i dont feel so dorky owning LoTR version.....well i still feel dorky just not that i am alone in it. I love strategy games like this including monopoly, battleship, and one of my all time favorites chinese checkers.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Risk is sensational, although you always seem to end up with one useless player that kamikazes when they start to lose. I have a friend with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy version which includes rules for Order 66 (the republic commanders have to role for each territory to see if their clone troopers betray them and then have to hunt down the Emperor who is placed in one of the Sepratist territories).

God, I don't think I recall ever playing a game of Risk that didn't end with people being pissed at each other for a week or so. Though now I'm reminded that my luck with the dice in Risk carried over to Warhammer.

A similar-ish game is Diplomacy, which is fantastic, but you need to devote a week or so to playing.

Yes, yes. Before I moved out to the country, I thought about getting a set, but then realized my apartment was a terrible place to play Diplomacy. You see, not only did I live on the fourteenth floor, but I had a balcony.

People take Risk so seriously.

I love it but haven't played it in nearly 20 years.
