I don't have the new C:Codex, but was wondering who/what the Red Corsairs actually are and if they've had specific rules vs just the Hero choice in the current edition.

Agreed.

No they have no special rules at all, nor does any 'army' you make. Everything is up for grabs because they made CSM Codex an un-fluffy piece of power-gaming crap.

From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Yep. The 4th edition CSM codex is a POS and you might as well use codex Space Marines to represent your red corsairs because C:CSM has no special rules for anything.

The "update" to 4th edition chaos removed 8 armies from the game. We also got a Herald of Nurgle that is less tough than a Bionic Ultrasmurf Chaplain and Chaos Lords that are super worthless.

Basically if you don't want to field Plague Marines, Daemon Princes, or Obliterators/Defilers/Vindicators, too bad for you.

To answer the OP question:

I totally agree that the 4th edition codex is a tragedy. They cut out everything that made chaos fun and made it bland. They took so many books and books of special rules for all the different csm chapters/legions and just made them useless. Now they are nothing more than a paintjob. I think it would've been very easy to have a section of the chaos codex dedicated to the other chapters. Would it really be that hard to give a page per chapter template with a few special rules, force org changes, and maybe extra wargear choices? Chapters like iron warriors aren't terribly hard to make in 4th edition, but alpha legion + word bearers are completely screwed without cultists and their special rules.

Here's hoping for the cult codex to come out asap (maybe after blood angels, dark eldar, and necrons?).

HEY! My Word Bearers may be boring, but the amount of Daemons I can use and still be fluffy makes me smile! My record with them is over twice as many wins as losses with a list most would call subpar. So I take offense to them being screwed...

Still, I miss my Dark Apostle!

I read this, but it's not very long. Just seemed like Astral Claw -> Heretic was not a whole lot of fluff; especially to garner their own IC.

So basically Huron is a rogue space marine pirate who sold his soul to Chaos and takes on any who will come to his cause?

That's really all that you get in the codex. It really is quite long for a small renegade chapter that was only really focused on 4th edition whereas the other big chapters were around a lot longer and got chapter approved entries.

I never said or meant to imply that you couldn't win with a 4th edition codex army. My point was that without their special rules , cultists, and interesting daemons (i find the "lesser/greater" daemon choices very bland without the 4 god variant rules) it just doesnt feel very word bearers. I played night lords, iron warriors, alpha legion, and word bearers during my stint in 3rd edition and I enjoyed them thoroughly. Now that nothing really makes them stand out from any other army choice besides a paint job and the bland unit choices they aren't nearly as fun for me. That doesn't mean I can't put up a good fight with my current death guard-like army, but I can't wait until we get a real update and they better not drop the ball again this time.
