My group and I are just starting out, and while we're mostly looking at models and basic play styles for the different factions at the moment, I had been wondering a lot about the difference between the Khador and Cygnar forces. Anyone care to explain them for me?

Cheers

Khador units are generally more straightforward. They are by and large a beatstick army with some exceptions. Cygnar is a a bit like Eldar lots of different answers to the same questions, synergy is probably more important with Cygnar, just about all of the Khador units work well together, some Cygnar units don't mix together as well as others.

Khador's Jacks are slow, heavily armored and absolutely brutal pretty much across the board. Cygnars are more specialized, generally faster(Hammersmith and Centurion excepted) with a wide variety of light 'jacks something Khador has none of(They use Heavily armored man-o-war units instead). Cygnar caster choice will greatly favor certain jacks over others due to spell selection, this isn't so much the case with Khador, except possibly with standard Vlad and Destroyers or the Behemoth(he has a spell that makes jacks that shoot much better)

In Khador's toolbox everything starts looking like a hammer or an axe... in Cygnar's toolbox you have a full selection of hammers, pliers, screwdrivers etc.

I think Cygnar tends towards theme armies better, you can go all sparky(Stormblades, Storm lances, Storm Guard), regular army(Long Gunners, Trenchers, Trencher Commandos, Elites(Gun Mages, Black 13th), all Melee(Sword Knights, Precursor Knights, Storm Blades, Storm Guard)

I've played both armies and find balancing army creation is trickier with Cygnar. This is just my opinion, but I think you have to dig a little deeper to make Cygnar work, their units aren't weaker than Khadors, just different. Cygnar units are often designed to multi-task, Khador units generally do one thing very well like shoot(Widowmakers, Winterguard Rifle Corps) or melee(Iron Fang Pikemen, Doomreavers, Man-o-War Demo Corps).

if you have some specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Here backing up Grimhowl, Cygnar needs to work together to bring the enemy down. Khador has some sledgehammers which take some time to get to position but hit hard. On the cygnar side you have to soften the hard cases first and then drop them with another unit.

Currently Cygnar also has some of the best assassination casters in the game, and warcasters tend to focus on buffing friendly units.

from wat i can gather about Khador, they are slow, easy to hit, and mainly all melee. but the up side is they hit like a ton of bricks, are almost impossible to damage, have the most boxes on their 'jack grids, and are pretty straight forward in most game plans (go forward and smash anything in their way ).

as for Cygnar, they require a little more planning, its their biggest downfall. picking the right caster wit the right battlegourp and the right units/solos is the most important. picking poorly can be an almost instant defeat.but their upside is that most of Cygnar have disruption and most of the stats are average to above average. they also have (from wat i can remeber) the most types of repair units: a caster, a solo, and a unit, where as Khador only has a unit.

but this is all a moot point. it all comes down to wat you like both outta game (models and painting) and in game (tactics and playstyle).

good luck gaming!

All comments above are entirely valid. Cygnar has an answer for everything in some form, the problem is getting everything shoe-horned into a list.

It is no coincidence that Cygnar are referred to in some circles as "the Ultramarines of the Iron Kingdoms". They can do a little of everything decently.

In comparison Khador are a World Eater/Space wolf sort of vibe: yeah they have some guns, but what they are really good at is hitting you repeatedly in the face with giant axes!!!
