Imperial Recruit in Training

Hello! I'm new to the Dakka website (Found it while looking for a discussion on Guardsmen Mabro to be certain on how he works.) After a few days of reading army lists, battle reports, tactics, and rule discussion I began to really like this forum, so I thought I'd try and get over a few fears I have about posting and sign up.
I really enjoy the story of Warhammer 40k, most of all being the Imperial Guard, so that is the army I am thinking about starting out with. A friend was kind enough to give me a copy of the Rulebook and Imperial Guard codexs in PDF form since I live a great distance away from him.(I hope this isn't an issue here, if it is I'm sorry and do what you need about it.) But with that and the help of Skype he answered many questions about rules and that only increased my interest in it.
I do not have an army, I am told that it is an expensive hobby to do and it isn't something you purchase all at once (And with what I've come up with I have no reason to doubt.) However I have done some research and when I save up the cash I think I know what to buy to get started with a 500 point or so army for a really small game along with the codex and rulebook. It'll help that I plan on getting a roommate who has a nid army in a few months, but he hasn't played much either since his local gaming club won't let him use unpainted models and he is a horrible painter.
I was thinking about calling up a Games-workshop store that is an hour or so drive away to see if they had a demo or something like it that I could play to make sure I enjoy the hobby before jumping in, but I am certain that if my friend in the very least plays it'll be worth it.
I still have many questions, but I'll leave that for a later time when I'm sure they haven't been answered.
I hope I don't end up annoying anyone with my questions and hope that my post is clear enough. Again I am sorry if I broke a rule here regarding the PDF thing.

How is it they live in such harmony - the billions of stars - when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds about someone they know.

Welcome dude, and rubbish to the gaming club that wont allow you to play with unpainted models. It discourages new players, if at all they should of brought you in and given you painting tips. I started with a small force. you dont want to buy the lot and find out that half of what you got, you dont need. Start with your desired army list and build from there. One squad at a time, building, modeling, and then painting. Before you know it, you have 3,000 points of what you really want all painted up and ready to go. then go back to that gaming club and woop a$$. If you need any help, call upon the Blood Angels. We love IG. (for a snack)
