This isn't mentioned very often, but it would seem to me that much of the inspiration for the Emperor comes from Leto Atreides II in the Dune novels. The fourth Dune book is even called God Emperor of Dune. In those novels, Leto makes himself semi-immortal by fusing his body with a sandworm. He then rules for 3000 years or something before being assassinated at the end of God Emperor.

The thing is, he planned it that way. The idea behind the 3000 year reign was to create a state of stagnation in the galaxy. When he died, the stagnation stopped and the people in his vast empire rediscovered themslves and became vibrant and active in the ensuing chaos. This was done to with the long-term goal of defeating overwhelming enemies from beyond the empire's bounds.

Isn't this situation similar to the 40k world? I mean, much as I like the games they make, GW can't really be accused of originality, can they? So, do you think the Emperor planned/allowed the Horus Heresy to happen so that he would go into stasis, stagnate his empire, and by his eventual death re-energise the Imperium?

That is an awesome, awesome outlook on things.

EXTRA HERESY!!!

Kidding. That's actually a really intuitive way to look at it. Plus, if the Emperor is supposed to be all-powerful, he might even have that kind of omnipotence. And the supposed ragnarok like event that occurs when he finally dies is definitely one way of interpreting the revitalization.

Good thinking on your part Orky.

But we shall never know since the 40k universe is trapped in a massive staiss shell where time stopped before M41.

Personally I've always felt that the emperor is supposed to die. I got that impression more so form the little history lesson in Mechanicum where it seems to imply that the Emperor in some form or another has always been protecting and guiding mankind. It seems his plan is to be reborn for eternity to help mankind, only now his sons have entombed him in the golden throne (what should have been his greatest work) and the high lords of terra will never let him truly die.

Except it is larger than even the Cadian Gate and it's sealed, not through his doing that they know of. When Magnus shot through to the Golden Throne, it pretty much ruined the Golden Throne and most likely closed the webway for good.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

This is kinda like the E=old one thread, I completly agree with both.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I Die, You are forgiven. If I Live, I will kill you." Such is the Rule of Honor.

Apples and aardvarks here, fella.

The webways is a series of trans-warp tunnels which bypass the fluctuations and dangers of the Empyrean - the Cadian Gate is a track of calm realspace that penetrates into the Eye of Terror - the largest warpstorm in the Galaxy...
