Hey there, I'm a long time warhammer fantasy/40k player who has been tempted by "the other side." There is a warmachine tourney in a LGS around here in about 10 days, and I was wondering if it was possible to get up to 75 points in cryx, learn the rules, and not get roflstomped out there door in a 10 day window? Not expecting to win or anything, just put up a good fight. I've watched a couple games at another LGS and sort of have a basic understanding as to game process. I've done some model research, and the cryx models are just crazy awesome. I have no idea if they are any good or not, but I do know, loving the models' looks is always a good first step right?

EDIT: I also will only have about 150 bucks after buying the book(s) to spend on models. I can also trade some NIB skaven stuff I have, but would have to get them traded fast.

I don't have much experience with WH/H but this is pretty much the bible for those interested:

http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/

Otherwise... I guess 10 days is enough to learn the core rules, but it's generally all about combos, distance judging, and knowing what your opponent is capable of as well.

So... getting roflstomped depends entirely on the other opponents , even 'pros' can be roflstomped... WH/H is somewhat that crazy. Hence the line "Play with a pair."

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

75 points is a big game for Warmachine. I wouldn't try to build an army for this tournament if I was you.

Start slow, buy a battle box, get a few (actual) games under your belt first, then we'll talk about bigger games.

I've never played Warmachine at 75 points, I've played a lot of 50 point (and below) games and one 100 point game.

just talked with the organizer of it. They are not going up to 75, it will max at 50.

That's still a lot of ground to cover in 10 days. Take it steady, you'll thank me in the long run.

"max at 50" Is this an escalation tournament? What's the low end?

BTW: You only need one book at the moment, Prime MkII.

Completely doable but you are gonna have to study Battle college and your units cards like crazy. Try and think of every possible combination and kill tactic you can use. If you are a good tactician you should still be able to win a few rounds maybe not place but not get roflstomped either.

When the Axe comes down just pray your face isn't beneath it.

Yes, it's multiple rounds, each round has a point increase. Starting at 20, then 35, then 50 I believe. I picked up Prime mkII while I was at the shop and the cryx card deck, studying up on them before I start buying models.

Just running some quick numbers on the Warstore.com, I would say work your way up. Get the faction deck, starter box, a Helljack box, a blister of Bonejacks and decide on a couple of units to either have min or max model counts of and then start playing and wait for the next tourney.

I have just started playing Cryx myself and have thoroughly enjoyed the first few games. I did buy a starter box and a selection of items that I either liked or I saw someone else using to some effect. I went back afterwards and found that the models in the box come to about the same price as if I bought them individually on Amazon. I did buy one of the plastic Helljack kits and I am going to try an magnetize the Helljack in the box so that it can be converted like the plastic model. Point is that had I to do it over again, I would not have bought the starter box since the plastic kits are more practical and I do not need 3 bonejacks at the moment. Even the bonejack kit will be out shortly but it will be too late by then.

After 40k, it is a very pleasant change to be able to mix and match models so readily and still be able to play an interesting game.

That's a solid point, I never use three arc nodes in MkII unless I'm using Coven.

If you can buy the bits separately at the same cost. Maybe the battlebox is not the best choice for a beginner.
