Slaughter in Space Indy
GT
April 17-18th, 2010
Ontario Convention Center, California
Hey all, here’s my batrep from the SoCal Slaughter in Space Indy
GT a few weeks back. Sadly, I am not crowned King of the Nerds this time out, but I do have a good time and get to see a lot of friends from around that I haven’t seen in quite some time (which is probably a pretty good reason to get together and throw dice).
Congrats to Dave Fay (who I know from games down at Game Empire San Diego) for winning Overall and DashofPepper (who I only know as a Dakka personality) for Best General and their Golden Tickets!
Playing my Mech Guard, which has been going for a couple of years now in various incarnations.

Game One – Planetfall vs Dawson playing Space Wolves
Mission has three objectives placed in a diagonal between the opposing armies. Objectives can only be claimed by dismounted infantry and they have a chance to explode causing damage when claimed. Dawn of War deployment.
Dawson’s list:
Thunderwolf Lord
2 Dreads in Drop Pods
1 Grey Hunter Pack in Drop Pod
2 Grey Hunter Packs in Rhinos
5 Thunderwolves
15 Fenrisian Wolves
3x 6 Long Fangs w/ 4 Missiles and 1 Heavy Bolter
Thunderwolves are represented by bikes in the Vassal images (need to update my sprites one of these days).
Deployment
Dawson wins the roll-off and elects to go first, choosing the NW corner.
A single Grey Hunter Rhino is deployed in the corner. I neglect that there are Drop Pods incoming and deploy a Veteran Chimera and empty
HQ Chimera. The Sentinels and Stormtrooper Chimera outflank.
Turn One – Space Wolves
Both Dreadnought Drop Pods land by the two exposed Chimeras. The empty
HQ Chimera blows up, but the Veteran one is only Stunned. Thunderwolves and the attached Lord come on the center behind their defensive wolf shield while the Long Fangs fan out to find good shooting positions.
Turn One – Imperial Guard
My forces pile into the SE corner, while Veterans move forward, explode one Dreadnought (losing half of their men to the explosion) and Stun the other. Vendettas turbo boost on from the 24” mark on the right table edge (L-shaped deployment included the right table edge) and prepare to deliver supporting fire next turn.
Turn Two – Space Wolves
The last Drop Pod comes down in front of the Demolisher, disgorging its passengers who are promptly intercepted by the Daemonhunter Mystics. The Demolisher cannon unloads on the Grey Hunters, but goes wild and only kills a couple. Obviously rattled by their near death, the Grey Hunter meltaguns miss the battle tank. Long Fang missiles are out of range of the Vendettas so a squad decides to move forward instead. In the center, the two Wolf units trip over the rocks and barely move forward.
Turn Two – Imperial Guard
Outflanking Stormtroopers show up on the left side and shoot up a Long Fang pack. The Demolisher, Inquisitor retinue and a Veteran Chimera all move forward and vaporize the Drop Podding Grey Hunter pack in the center. In my deployment zone, infantry remounts their Chimeras and move forward, blowing up a drop pod along the way. Hydras and Vendettas take down a pair of Thunderwolves while multilaser fire picks off a few Fenrisian wolves for good measure.
Turn Three – Space Wolves
Long Fangs take down the trespassing Stormtrooper Chimera and beat on the guys inside with heavy weapons fire. The Thunderwolf Lord separates from his pack (which turns out to be a good idea as the unit again trips over the rocks), fleets and takes down one of the Vendettas. In the center Long Fang support fire is ineffective against the advancing Chimeras and the Fenrisian wolves charge the lead Chimera, Stunning it.
Turn Three – Imperial Guard
The Sentinels outflank to the left, destroy the Rhino there, pin the passengers, but chicken out of charging the Hunters and the Long Fangs. The suicidal Fenrisian wolves in the center get barbequed by heavy flamer love, but a few decide they want to stay and fight! A Chimera immobilizes itself in the center of the board, the Lord takes two wounds and the Thunderwolves are shot down to a single member.
Turn Four – Space Wolves
Long Fangs take apart all three Sentinels and the remaining Stormtrooper with a volley of missiles. The last Rhino breaks cover and heads for the center objective while on the right, another Long Fang volley explodes a Chimera. The Wolf Lord eats the Veterans that fell out while the other Thunderwolf explodes the last Vendetta.
Turn Four – Imperial Guard
Infantry scrambles forward on the left and takes out the last normal Thunderwolf. The Demolisher leads two Chimeras into the center of the board to duke it out, but can only immobilize the Rhino there.
Turn Five – Space Wolves
On the left, the Grey Hunters there unpin and run to the
SW objective, claiming it. The Space Wolves in the center grimly disembark their Rhino and run forward to claim the center one, hoping the Guard aim is poor this turn. Long Fangs fire in support and explode the closest Chimera, spilling the troops out. The Thunderwolf Lord charges the nearby Veteran squad, looking to wipe out another scoring unit, but is instead killed in close combat by the Guardsmen!
Turn Five – Guard
Weapons crash down upon the center Grey Hunters, but they go to ground and two of them survive the barrage. On the right, Guardsmen continue to run for their NE objective, but they’re well short. Dawson has a win right now with the
SW objective his, but sadly we go to another turn.
Turn Six – Space Wolves
No real options here other then to hold out, so Long Fangs beat the heck out of the center Guardsmen with fragmentation missiles, but I go to ground and my saves are excellent, as most of the Guardsmen survive.
Turn Six – Imperial Guard
The center Wolves go down under sustained Hydra fire, leaving the pinned Guard infantry in control of the center objective. On the right, the
HQ orders the other infantry unit to run onto the NE objective, which they do. And finally warming up after 4 straight airballs, the Colossus drops a centered round onto the Wolves guarding the
SW objective and splatter most of them.
Aftermath
And that’s it for Game One. I actually think there was a 7th turn, but if so, nothing really changed. Dawson was a great guy to play again (as was everyone in the tournament) and he also runs one of the San Diego podcasts (which I’ll post once I find his card). Apparently he’s played against members of my gaming club (The Chosen, out of Brea,
CA) and had good experiences, so I hope I gave him a good game too.
For myself, deploying units in
DoW against Drop Pods was just dumb and I was really too slow moving out with the Chimeras, which would have cost me the game if it had ended on 5. I also lose the secondary objective since I neglected to blow up the drop pods sitting in my deployment zone which is also pretty dumb of me. End score is 13-5.
