Subject: Dark Angels Doublwing at Ard Boyz in San Luis Obispo, CA

First, story of how Ard Boyz started. So I find out the night before that the guy who was running Ard Boyz has to work unexpectedly and that no one else at the shop would be able to run the event. With some mad scampering on our local forums we find someone else to run the event and we all agreed to not be dicks and even let the guy play if he wants to. So we're basically running the event ourselves. (Turns out we had an odd number so he didn't play and acted as TO for the event.)
I pick up one of the local gamers on my way down to the shop and while we're driving he gets a text from another gamer that the store had rebooked something else in the shop for that day so we didn't have any space. So the whole tournament got moved to another local store, but that store isn't an authorized GW store (he had a falling out with a GW sales manager) so while we're playing we aren't sure if the tournament will count or if we'll get prize support.
It turns out that the guy who was supposed to be running the event knew a week ago that he couldn't but didn't bother to tell anyone till the day before and the guy who owns the shop didn't bother to try to find a replacement in that time. So our entire group is now angry at both of them. I shouldn't be surprised since the guy running the event is notoriously unreliable and we all pretty much hate the store owner anyway so really it's our fault as we should have seen this coming...
Huge kudos to the Imagination Shoppe that took us Ard Boyz refugees in on short notice, gave us a place to play, and said that if GW doesn't support the tournament he would anyway. He was already cool, but now he's the premier example of what a FLGS should be.
We don't know yet if our games will count but I still had fun playing!
The games side isn't as drama filled but here goes:
My army:
Belial
Twin Lightning Claws
Sammael
Landspeeder
Dreadnought
Venerable, MM, HF
Dreadnought
Venerable, PC, HF
Dreadnought
Venerable, AC, HF
DW Squad
2 LC, CF, HF, Apothecary, Standard Bearer
DW Squad
LC, CF, AC
DW Squad
LC, CF, AC
DW Squad
HF, CF, LC
RW Bikes (6)
2 MG, Apothecary
Attack Bike
MM
Landspeers (2)
MM
Predator Destructor
AC, 2 HB
Predator Destructor
AC, 2 HB
Whirlwind
Round 1 vs. Daemonhunters
He had (from memory):
3 Landraiders
Leman Russ Squadron with Executioner and Demolisher
PAGK
GK Termies with Grandmaster
Inquisitor with Mystics
2 Vet Squads
Storm Troopers with Rhino
Callidus
My half of the table has 3 objectives and his has two. I quickly take all three making him come to me and I begin wiping out as many of his troops as I can. He plays it too safe and once he begins to advance towards me I'm able to focus just about my entire army against him. He scores one objective but I take 3 giving me a major victory plus 2 bonus points. I was almost able to take a fourth with a single turbo-boosting bike on the last turn but he does a good job of blocking with a landraider and I'm not able to get close enough.
Round 2 vs. Blood Angels
He had:
Reclusiarch
Death Company in Landraider
Attack Bike Squad
2 Vindicators
2 Baal Predators
2 Assault Squads
Sniper Scout squad
(might be missing something else here)
Not fully optimized but my list doesn't like those fast moving vindicators!
I go first and he puts most of his army in reserve with the Baals outflanking. Again, he plays it safe against my terminators and I advance towards the middle of the table rather unmolested and do my best to give myself cover against his Vindicators. I'm able to bloody him a bit but I make some gambles and allow him to triple charge his DC against a terminator squad, my bike squad, and sammael. He immobilizes Sammael and completely wipes out the bikes and terminators. I figured my 2+ save or T5 would save me but it's not to be as he gets re-rolls to hit and to wound!! I counter charge with a terminator squad, my command termie squad, and belial and also connect against the landraider (needing sixes to hit). I kill 4 with shooting on my way in and wipe them down to just a wounded Reclusiarch and 2 DC left. I shake the LR but that's it and it speeds away. I wipe out the DC and Reclusiarch in the next turn with no casualties and proceed to try and finish off what I can. In the end, his fast moving vehicles prove to be too hard to hit in cc and I wiff most of my attacks. On his last turn he get's pretty lucky and is able to cause just enough damage to turn a draw into a minor win. We each get a bonus point and I find that I'm still in the running for top 3.
Round 3 vs. Deathguard
He had:
Lash Prince
Nurgle Prince
Drop Termies with Combi-meltas
3 10 man PM squads with meltas in Rhinos
1 6 man PM squad with PG's and an icon in a Rhino
2 Lesser Daemon squads
Defiler
2 3 man Oblit Squads
This player is a friend and pretty good and he was commenting at the end of the first round that my list looks scarier than it actually is. He's right but I tell him we'll see if we end up playing each other. He was the first one to actually beat my Doublewing list with pretty much the same list I'm facing now. I learned a lot from that game so I'm ready for him. He has 28 KP's and I have 30 so it's pretty even. I take first turn again and basically shoot my entire army at his Lash Prince, bringing him down to 1 remaining wound. I also blow up a rhino giving me 3 KP's. His turn he doesn't do much but kill a couple terminators. Second turn I finish off the Lash Prince and kill his Nurgle Prince. Those were the biggest cc threats to my army, now it's just a question of trying to kill the rest of his easy KP's and keep mine alive. His turn he kills my Landspeeders and the defiler clips my attack bike hiding behind my whirlwind with the blast. I fail my cover save and there goes an easy 3 KP's (the whirlwind made it though). We trade shooting for the next several turns and I manage to wipe out the rest of his Rhinos and 2 Plaguemarine squads. Sammael blows up his Defiler with his Assault cannon but then gets assaulted and brought down by krak grenades and a powerfist. In the end, I have all three Dreads left and 2 terminator squads along with a Predator while he has both Lesser Daemon units, 2 PM squads, and both Oblits. I win by 2 KP's!
So out of 10 players I end up taking 3rd with 41 battle points. 4th place has 40 and 5th (Deathguard player) has 39.
We're emailing GW our story and hopefully our results will count. We followed all the rules and made the best out of a crappy situation so I think GW will allow it but no matter what I had a fun time and decent success with my Dark Angels.
Again, a huge shout out to Todd at The Imagination Shoppe! Thanks for giving us a place to play and supporting us!

So it looks like our results will stand and we'll get prize support. Apparently the shop has a new rep over at GW and he really wants to make sure we get credit for the tournament.
So that's good news!

Congrats on the win Ozymandias. Good to see people taking lemons and kicking ass with them.
The Deathwing has always had a soft spot in my heart and I would *love* to start an army of them someday. They'll have to wait though because my Tau and Sisters of Battle comes first (I'm a sucker for lost causes, what can I say?)

That's GREAT news! It means I might get to abuse your DH at semis!
Congratulations on your success.

Wasssup. Was it the not so freindly down town store that is named after a nice little cartoon fish that gave you all the run around. wouldnt surprise me in the least. I have had a long standing dislike for him and his.
i didnt know you all had a new store. The imagination shop. i would patronize there like mad. dont bother with that other fool if its the fool im thinking of.
I am glad to hear you placed third. who got first and second and what did they play.

You got it right on the head Sennacherib.
Cooper (who you probably don't know) took first with Chaos Space Marines (Regular squads, chosen, daemon princes, greater daemon). Gordy took second with Daemonhunters.
The Imagination Shoppe is a coffee shop/game lounge. He has about 4-5 tables that we set up (though we bring the terrain) and pretty much lets us take over when we need to. Been open since the beginning of the school year.
@ SabrX: This year was the first time. And it almost didn't (and still might not) happen.
I haven't decided if I want to head up north and beat Janthkin or head down south and beat Reecius for the semi-finals...

Good to hear that you all have somewhere else to play. I would NOT patronize the guido's shop if at all possible. we have a new local shop to play at that is a BAR. they hold tuesday night game night and rope off half of the bar so we can play till the wee hours.
Are you going to a semi final. My buddy matt went all the way to the finals in Baltimore? last year. He played a mixed chaos list with one of each of the special troop choices, and 9 oblits. I played him with a really nasty nid choir list and only pulled off a draw with two or three minis left on the table. he was mostly unhurt.
