hey all , starting retribution , just can't deside on the warcaster , it's either Adeptis Rahn or Kaelyssa
i'm gonna use a Phoenix and Hydra as the Jacks , and mage hunter strike force and the archers as units , and maybe for solo the MH assassins...
just don't know what caster would fit in that bunch... so advice is welcome

Well, if you were to use more Mittens then I would suggest Rahn.

But with the stuff you have, I would suggest Kaelyssa.

Both are support casters, but Kaelyssa's feat is alot more useful to more of your guys I believe.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Kaelyssa

Rahn requires a specific support group to be effective, Kaelyssa will bring flexibility to your list.

My experience has actually been the opposite. Kaelyssa's buffs for the army are pretty few and far between and other than using the MHSF to ping a caster to death through their jack is pretty limited. Rahn on the other hand has a host of good positioning spells that his feat will allow him to spam and that almost any unit will benefit from. On top of that he works well with stealth heavy armies because Force Field allows him to control AOE deviations (and incidentally lets him direct AOEs near a Hydra to try and power it). Battle Mages are nice to have something else to benefit from his feat, but he generally feats to assassinate anyways, so it's not required for an effective Rahn list. All you really need for Rahn is a Chimera or two and he's golden.

Mastershake: I have only ever played against the retribution, I just noticed when my opponent changed out a few core models in his list to try something different with Rahn the synergy wasn't there and he limped the entire game. It could have been the units were just a mismatch for rahn too.

I have seen Kaelysa perform better on more occasions with a wider variety of units. I still think retribution relies too much on tricks(special rules that give them a slight edge on paper) and really falls short when those tricks are negated i.e. knockdown, stationary, and models that ignore stealth.

To say an army falls apart without special abilites or against things that mitigate them isn't a news flash or specific to the Ret. The army hasn't had any more of a rock-paper-scissors feel than any other list I've run against. Also, your opponent changing out a few models to try something different isn't really enough to guage a caster and what they can do.

Clearly you missed what I meant. Your right every list uses special rules and abilities to gain the upper hand and when those are lost the army suffers.

I meant more or less the retribution relies on them and when they are negated they have very little resilience. This is not true of other armies Menoths choir add fantastic bonuses to their jacks either making them immune to magic ranged attacks or boosting their abilities in combat, however, if the choir goes down the army still functions very well and isn't done in. Cryx relies on fast arc nodes but doesn't fall apart when those nodes go down earlier than expected, Retribution in my experience tends to be more fragile and less forgiving when things like stealth and pathfinder are negated.
