I'm not a huge fan of grey knights or SOBs, but I've always loved the "vibe" of the Inquisition. I've been meaning to build an Inquisitor and retinue for a while, just to work into the odd fun game and as a cool modeling project.

I knew I wanted to convert my own. There just aren't that many inquisitor models out there and I didn't like the idea of having one that I knew dozens of other players out there would have.

So for about a year now, everytime I stop in one of the two FLGSs I look around at fantasy and off-brand miniatures to see if anything looks cool and convertible. Today I finally found one, a reaper-mini, that I liked:

(Marine and Scout for size comparison.)

I actually really like the body/pose. I wanted something fantasy looking that could still fit in the 40k universe w/armor and a robe, so I found what I wanted. The pose is pretty good, although because he's so forward on his toes the feet kind of look like demonic hooves when view from the front.

I obviously don't plan on keeping the skull head. ;p I haven't decided whether to build it up into something with GS or just dremel it out and stick another head in. I've already used some brettonian knight heads on a few marines and it's a cool look. Could work here, but then again I want to keep him special looking.

I'll need to file that demon head thing off his knee, and fill in one spot on the leg where they let skeleton bone show. (Pic Below.) The inside of the elbows are the same and will need filled in as well. I could not for the life of me get a good picture of them, so I gave up. One just has a closed fist that will hold a pistol well enough (trying to decide if an inferno pistol is worth the points, as I'm not sure how to model it...) and the other holds a sword that actually looks very eldar-esque (I guess he's a bit of a radical.)

Anyway, I'll post pics as he comes along. Excited to finally be working on this.

Did a little work today, just adding a few small touches to make him nice and imperial-y. Replaced that Demonhead thing on his knee with an =][= that really needs cleaned up (I suck with GS still. XP)

The bolt pistol needs something special but I don't know what... Tried a scope but the one I had looked huge on it. Those dangly incense things or whatever looked like too much too...

Also having a little head trouble. The brettonian knight head looked comically too big. I think I have a marine head that looks suitably holy-rage-ish, only trouble is clearing out space there... I got the skull head off but I need to be able to drill down into that space and hollow out the top a bit and my dremel is not doing the job. Suggestions from experience?

6-8-10

All together, ready to be primed. I liked whalemusic's idea of lengthening the pistol barrel somehow. Gives it a special look. Almost las-pistoly but still with the bolter looking ammo clip.

I was never able to drill the head cavity down as far as I wanted, but i did get it to a workable height.

Painting Started:

Just a base coat on the robe, armor, and face. Gave it a spray of figure flat to take a little of the false shiny off the gold and protect it from my fingers. :p Just applied a red/brown wash to the robe and armor and a GW Ogryn Flesh wash to the face. Off to eat some dinner while they dry.

Done!
I meant to post in progress pics of the painting but got carried away and didn't take any so... Here's the finish product!

Really wish I had better lighting available... Also his armor looks a little shinier here than in real life. I'm happy with how he's turned out though.

(Added updates to first post.)

I was digging through an old box and thought this little dude would make a perfect crusader. Just gotta give him a shield and maybe turn that spear into a banner or holy relic?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone actually knew anything about this model. It says "BRET" on it's little base tab thing, but he doesn't look like any brettonian I could find a picture of, so I'm guessing it's just for "breton." I know I bout alot of off-brand stuff that just looked close when I was younger, but can't remember this one. Any ideas? Just curiosity.

The inquisitor is looking very promising. I think the crusader might be one of the old Brettonians who looked much more like historical miniatures and nothing like the newer ones. Eager to see this progress.

This looks ace!

As for the man at arms, yeah it is a gw piece. Its an old metal bretonian man at arms spearmen sergeant.

Cool. Nice to know what I've got. I love these old "retro" figures. ;p

And glad you both like it, thanks for the encouraging words.

So the big guy's all done, I'm really happy with how he came out, been wanting an Inquisitor for so long, but wanted to wait for the right model and I think this was it. I'll keep this thread open I think as I work on the retinue, but as the crusader's the only one I've got and I have no idea how I'm going to rep the rest it's going to be a long process.

Nice one. I would like to try the an Inquisitor war-band some day. I really like the look of the bounty hunter body. Would choose a different head for it likely though.

I can't say I am a fan of the Inquisitor's head. It looks too big. I'd look into the Empire range for something smaller. Maybe with a helmet that compliments the armour.

Yeah... The head choice basically came from saying "this is the only thing I already own that works and I don't feel like spending more money."

From table-top distance it looks alright, and I'm happy with it for now, but will definitely be keeping my eyes out for a good replacement in the future. I'll check out some empire stuff next time I'm in the store, thanks for the tip.

Long time no update. Actually finished the crusader forever ago, probably same day as my last post here, just never uploaded it. Work was crazy busy and then had a wedding to be in.

So anyway, here he is, along with a test model for a new marine color scheme. I'm actually planning to repaint.... almost everything...

Here's him compared to two models I speedpainted to get ready for a little tournament. I've been working on a crusade themed army with different chapters represented, and had originally figured the tactical squads would maintain their original colors but paint a shoulder or arm grey to represent being part of the crusade. I liked the idea, but in practice my army just lacked that appearance of consistency that I wish I had. So, everybody's going mostly gray now. I'll still let each squad have an individual color, but it will just be the left arm and right lower leg. I think it should work out fine.
