The Battle for Lapis Mine.(an actual battle report)
Commander Gwiness was tired. He had spent the last 74 hours awake and planning possible plans to circumvent the ork lines before they reached the main mining structures. If the orks breached the perimeter and destroyed the main coupling, the derrick above the mine would collapse killing the 20,000 or so miners still working in the mines despite the current attack. Their faith protected them in the form of Gwiness's men.
His elite forces were ready in ambush for the ork attack, he had shosen to face them in an older power station far from the mining base in order to route the orks before they had a chance of even seeing the precious mine. The wind blew and a blizzard was incoming within the next 48 hours and the severe cold did nothing to console the fact that he was facing the collective forces of two freebooter captains. The thing was that these two captains seemed to complement each other, one was a mek and the other a boss, one with heavy weapons, one for assautls. He was lucky enough that a small contingent of Dark Angels had been willing to join them in this battle.
The ruined habs of the old power plant crew hid the Glacien 32nd well enough for Commander Gwiness. His men were waiting in the ruins save two squads of penal legion troopers acting as bait for a trap. The Dark Angels under Brother Captain Repin occupied the power plant itself which had been activated by the Glacien 32nd techpriest to let the orks think it was still in use. They had brought their best and were waiting for the chance to strike.
The wild cackling and firing announced the arrival of the ork forces and as expected two large battlewagons arrived toting their respective freebooter captains while artillery and kans hammered shots into the ruins. Gwiness's men were fine, they had trained to avoid incoming fire while in cover and awaited the order to strike.
"Snowblind" Commander Gwiness yelled into the vox, the Glacien 32nd sprang into combat letting loose volleys of las fire along with heavy bolter and autocannon fire. Shouting resonated from the ruins. A small squadron of Glacien armor let loose their fire, the LRBT "Gargantua" shredding two killa kans with its main cannon and heavy bolter fire. While the punisher pattern "Heavy Rain" dismembered the remaing kan. The vanquisher "Titus" under command of one of Ferrum Sentio's finest tank commanders spotted the boss's battlewagon and destroyed it with a single round. Artillery fire guided by a forward observer wreaked havoc on a group of boys that had been following the kans into battle while a forward basilisk aimed at the ork artillery.
Ork deffkoptas zoomed overhead, unleshing their payloads on their respective targets, killing a forward sniper unit and wounding the vox officer for Sgt. Berius's Squad. The penal legion moved forward along the left hand side of the battlefield to distract fire. As the big mek's battlewagon barreled over them, Commander Gwiness realised that they had done their job. The Land Raider "Exitus" barreled towards the charging orks while a single mob managed to reach the plants control room, overwhelming the elite stormtroopers positioned inside. The orks began to overwhelm the left side as Gwiness had formulated. On the left side, las fire began to dwindle as bikers and foot soldiers alike mobbed the hapless guardsman stationed there. However, the orks had grouped their forces in that little area.
"Thin them out." Gwiness said to the artillery's forward spotter.
Artillery hammered the boys along with fire from the basilisk "Unending Justice" and the "Gargantua" and "Heavy Rain" joined the chorus of gunfire and explosions as well. The next thing Gwiness noted was the explosion of the "Exitus" and the boss standing proudly on the burning wreckage, lifting the charred remains of a battle-brother with his power klaw. Boss "Wrekazug" began to feast upon the battle brothers' entrails in display for all to see. Issuing a challenge of faith to the imperial forces.
In an act of spite, a squad of storntroopers emerged from hiding next to the mek's battlewagon and turned it to ashes with the use of a meltagun. The boys inside the wagon leapt towards the troopers as it exploded, they wanted to get revenge for the wagon and used their burnas to scorch the troopers and the ground around them until refreezing water remained. Two banewolfs flooded the control structure with chemicals, forcing the mob's survivors to the roof where they met assault marines who were more than eager to avenge their comrades. A trukk rammed one of the banewolfs while it withered away under bolter fire. Techpriest Zandeg quickly looked over the ruined banewolf and began repairs. Drop pods rained from the sky releaseing their payloads into the ork's vanguard. The Venerable Dreadnought housing the ancient Battle Brother Victeeze tore a looted wagon in half in it's rage while the other drop pod released rocket fire from its turret.
The orks quickly overwhelmed the turret while a renzied group of gretchin attacked the assault marines, their slaver impaling only one of the marines before he himself was bisected.
The bikers continued their surge forth only to be met by autocannon fire and las fire and had to change course to avoid certain death. The big mek "Gitblasta" aimed his weapon and sent snotlings into the promethium tanks of the "Gargantua" rendering it immobile until Techpriest Zandeg could reach it. Screams and gunfire filled the air for a 34 mile radius around the combat zone while the smoke from the battle had managed to reach the mining complex that was well over 40 miles away. Artillery fire boomed and turned orks into mist, guardsmen were torn to pieces by rampaging orks. Boss Wrekazug eyed the now wounded "Gargantua" and stalked towards it, the gun crew realized the Boss's next plan and prepared to fire upon him and his retinue of nobs. "Heavy Rain" managed to get it's cannon firing first, tearing the nobz to pieces with a hail of rounds. "Gargantua" also opened fire with its bolters, while it's lascannon dealt the boss the final blow, evaporating the Boss where he stood.
The mek turned to see a large dreadnought directly behind him as it raised its giant fist. The mek tried to raise his weapon to fire, but was crushed into paste by the Dreadnought that unceremoniously burned the mek's remains. The boys were now without leadership and frenzied while the vanguard fell back. Gwiness realised that it was a feint and reading for a last and brutal counter. He was not disappointed.
The orks surged once more even without leaders to guide them and began to overwhelm the imperial lines. Their attempts were futile as they could not pierce the armor of the Galcian armored division. Yet, they still bellowed the last of their Waaaghs as they chopped the hapless guardsmen to pieces only to be cut down themselves. Commander Gwiness felt cold for the first time since the beginning of the battle, it was all over.
