so when a sharloc thrall casts a spell, does it cost focus off of the caster or can he cast a spell with cost 3 or less for free?
and if it does cost focus, do effects that lower the cost of a spell work on the sharloc thrall then ? thanks

It's free. I'm not sure if an effect that makes a spell cost less would make it available to the Skarlock though... But then I'm new to WM and Cryx myself.

The skarlock can cast spells that are 3 FOC or less.

I do not believe there is an ability that makes spells cost less that the skarlock benefits from.

It's free, and the skarlock is actually casting it (with the warcasters focus stat to determine to hit etc), so if there is something that modifies "spells" nearby then his would be modified, but he is not a warcaster even though he's using the warcasters spell list. So something that affects a warcasters spells would not affect spells coming from him.

Also since he has no focus he can't boost it or anything.

Additionally of there was a effect nearby that lowered the cost of a warcasters spells, the skarlock still could not cast those, because he can only cast spells with a cost of 3 or less, and you read that off the card.

You might be thinking of using perfect conjunction from the coven to lower cost and cast a cost 4 spell? That dosen't work since you interpret the rules literally. He can cast spells with a cost of 3 or less, not spells with a modified cost of 3 or less.

What's the wording of the spell that makes them cost less?

I don't believe this is correct.

The Warcaster is considered to be the one casting the spell. But the Skarlock is considered the origin point of the spell.

Spell slave reads "This model must be in its warcasters control area to make a spell slave special action. When it does it casts one of its warcasters spells with a cost of 3 or less ... The warcaster is considered to have cast that spell but this model is it's point of origin"

Since it's not the warcasters activation must be why he can't boost.

So yep you were right, but they are both casting the spell kind of...

That is a good line to remember, because there are some abilities/spells that trigger off of casting within range, and the Skarlock sidesteps them.

He can be close, while your caster is outside the range of the effect. I think the Arc Node ability works the same in those cases.

Actually, the Skarlock CAN boost the spells he casts, IF he's got some handy souls stored up.

Yes. The Skarlock can use Soul Tokens to boost his spell.

But the Warcaster cannot spend Focus to boost the Skarlock.


Though if you are able to get Soul tokens with a Skarlock, you are playing it way differently than I am.

I'm thinking: at that point... it's your game to lose.

I tend to run my Skarlock right near the front lines, since he can't Arc spells, and he doesn't have to be the one to actually kill the enemy to claim the souls, so it's not uncommon for me to walk him over next to some guys I'm in the process of slaughtering. Souls are FAR too tasty to let them go to waste.

well thanks for all the responces, and the perfect coven is the ability I was refering too. But now after all the posts I am not sure what the awnser to the original question is, Is the cast free, or does it use focus from the caster? I know the first posts stated that it was free clearly, later posts made me wonder whether you were arguing that point or not

Nope, the scarlock casts the spell himself, not using the warcaster's focus.
