I know the imperial guard typically has alot more units than other armies and typically more vehicles, so I figure an imperial guard army would be the most damaging on the wallet right?

probably shouldnt be in Articles and in 40k discussion, but yes, the guard have cheap troops points wise, and cheap vehicles points wise, so where 200$ in a marine army can go far in points, not that much for the guard.

IG Troops: 29.75$ for 10.
SM Tac. Squad: 40.00$ for 10.

Which still kinda sucks for IG.

Depends on what kind of army you want to play. Mech Guard vs. Foot Slogging Marines you'd probably run very similar amounts in monetary investment.

But yes, because IG have "cheaper" units (same goes for Orks and a few other armies), you'll have to stretch your budget some more to build a smilarly composed IG army vs. a Space Marine Army.

If it truly bothers you, remember that budgeting can help even that expensive foot-slogging IG list become a reailty. It may just take a while longer, but you'll have more time to model and paint each squad!

SM Tac. Squad: 37.25$ for 10. = 1 full usable units
Marine Player = 37.25$ for a one Troop Choice
IG Player

Which still kinda sucks for IG.

put that into USA prices(for us USA peoples ), and fixed what you would need to make them the same table top wise.

Marine Player = $37.25 for a one Troop Choice
IG Player = $74.50 for one troop choice

so yes IG armies cost a good deal, but in comparison:

Nids: $24.75 for 12 gaunts/gnats, playable assembled and painted without having to buy another(but most nid players need more)

Tau: $35 for 12, painted & assembled and they are good to go by the rules.

Chaos Marines: $37.25 Chaos Marines, just like the Nilla counter parts playable once assembled and painted

Witchhunters: $41.25 for 10 Battle Sisters, same as the others above.

Space Wolves: Same as Nilla Marines

Orks: $24.75 for 10 Ork Boyz, which is like all the others, playable without another box.

Necrons: $35 for 12 Warriors, same as the above units.

Eldar: Storm Guardians $33 + $33 for 16 Storm Guardians, though this might not be right, no info on whats in the box, only the pic of painted figs to go off here, so $66 for a playable unit.

Dark Eldar: $33 for 12 Dark Eldar Warriors, against (as far as I know) a playable squad.

Daemonhunters: $35 for 5 Grey Knights, like the rest

Chaos Daemons: Nurglings $17.25 + 17.25 for 4 bases, the base min squad is 3 bases for 40k daemons, $34.50.

Blood Angels: $29.75 for 5 Assault Marines.

from what I can tell, IG are the only army that makes you buy more than two boxes for a bare minimum troop choice. Chaos Daemons make you buy two for the nurglings, and possibly the Eldar Storm Guardians as well, but coming in at $34.50 and $66, they don't touch the wallet killing $74.50. which adds up quick seeing as you need another of those and an HQ, so for two troops and an HQ your looking, bare bone, no character upgrades, at a total of $174. this is of course straight form GW, but even with the common 25% off, your looking at $130.50 for basic troops and HQ, thats without tanks, characters, etc etc etc.

Probably work

Ebay helps too. I got a crazy silly amount of catachans, tanks, and sentinels for $160 last year:

100 catachans (half painted, kind of not so good)
6 sentinels with multilasers
2 Leman Russes
Random other things like a few of the Last Chancers I use for Veterans.

Retail for that would be far far higher than I paid.

Well, if you play a Assault Marines heavy list, then BA would become expensive. I play BA and I always play with at least two units of 10 Assault Marines, preferable 3-4.

You can run IG Veterans and they're good to go with just one box of Infantry (but if you want to trick them out with special weapons, you'll want to spend a little more).

Assult squads can only run at 5 to 10 models. back on topic IG are wallet killers unless you use things like ebay and craigslist.
