Saw a thread earlier bemoaning the state of the video game industry and how it felt less dynamic now than in years past. Just curious what thoughts are as to where the video game industry is going in the next 5 years.

My thoughts:

1) Serious money is going to start being put into writing, acting, and voice-overs. Big name talent will start popping up regularly. Sam Jackson, Bruce Campbell, and other stars have already been tapped and their effect on the game is quite noticible. Quality story delivery will be the norm rather than the exception.

2) Games designed for smart phones will explode (Already happening, really I think). Due to the nature of the device puzzle games like Tetris/Bejeweled will make money hand-over-fist. Games will start relying more on pseudo-multiplayer networking like Farmville. When the smartphones become cheap enough (and they're getting close I think) for kids to get them, IPhone Pokemon or something similar is going to be stupidly profitable.

3) Motion-based games will become a staple but not the driving force of sales. The positive press for exercise while playing will give it legs, but a limitation of physical space in a living/bedrooms and the limiting nature of the type of games that can be based on motion will cause a platuaeu that will prevent it from taking over the market as we know it.

3a) Somebody will develop a motion system designed for use in a gym that will become standard issue equipment for exercise areas across the nation. They will make a fortune.

3b) Somebody will develop a motion game system for physical therapy that will also make a lot of money (although I'm betting modest amouts compared to the folks who get in on the gym market).

4) A well-executed "realtime" game will be "the next big thing". Some games are already flirting with this, such as Animal Crossing. I'm thinking something along the lines of "24".


I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

1 sure

2 Dont know anything about phones

3 I cant see this, motion control is one not precise, two makes you look silly, three tires unfit gamers out too easy. It will never take over the controller, unless they get it way more precise. I think it will always be a causal thing good with drinks befoer you go out etc.

3a Can't see it because motion control is not even close to real exercise.

Not that I don't love the Xbox 360 but it's been what, 4 years since we've had a new console?

1) The industry has always but big money into this kind of things, most people however dont pay that much attention to the plot. For me plot is secondary to game play. Plot is overrated, if you want a deep plot, watch a movie.

2) This is the single biggest thing that has made me disenfranchised with model gameing as a whole. Playing a game on a smart phone is a pathetic excuss for mobel gameing, the input devices and the development is just not there, and it is never going to be. Its hard to develop a game that runs well on a multipule number of platforms for what they currently charge for games.

3) I see motion based gameing as a curiosity, a situationally approriate fad... Motion senseing is not only inprecise but its also a fairly processor intensive task. A game that uses motion senseing is never going to have the same graphics as a controller based game.

3 a&b) I dont care either way, gyms are not for me. I dont play video games to get exercise.

I agree with this. My wife has lost a bunch of weight using hers, as well as MILLIONS of people doing the same.

will also argue with the accuracy thing. Dont get me wrong, I love my PS3 hands down over my Wii, but its a game preference and thats it. I have played many games on the Wii, and when they are built nicely and not shoddy, the accuracy on the Wii is pretty damn close. Im sure in the future they can get it to be almost 100% bang on with better sensors and the like, but even now they are pretty close.

I personally think your one of those anti Wii types, and through default you just shun anything to do with them

I agree on this one. Ive tried playing real time games in the past and they just end up annoying me to no end. After the first hour of getting it set up, they are all THE SAME. You play for a little bit, and then nothing until tomorrow. I used to get smart and build a town that I had changed the time settings on the system in question ahead 12 hours. But even then you can only play for a few hours and its back to waiting.

People like playing games, when they want to play games. Not play for 45minutes and then stop and wait a day to play again. Thats just a silly idea
