I took my deamons that had gotten me through the first two rounds of ard boyz and tweeked my list a little bit with some help from some vetrans of the hobby as well as some of the people from my hometown throwing in their $.02

Game 1
Mission Kind of a crazy one Each player takes 2 troops and a non monstrous creature HQ and deploys them on the board with no vehicle allowed. Then each player took any choice from their army that was non vehicle and non monster and sent it to the center of the board. The 2 units meleed for 1 round and then the game began as a Dawn of war. I sort of breezed through this thinking Deamons were exempt........wait they werent. I broke my army into waves and was able to choose the wave but had to deploy all the reqired units and when the game began I had to deepstrike what was left of that wave. Massacre was winning by 1500vp. Holding the objective in the center of the board was worth 500 VP.

My opponent was playing....Mech IG. Well i should have figured, heres his list

Well first off was the peace talks at the centerof the board and I sent out my Crusher squad. Not only did I think they would kill whatever I meleed but I would have an icon on the board to land units off of. My opponent won the roll to go first. He deployed brother captain with 10 vets on one flank and another squad on the other. His peace negotiators was a third squad of vets. I deployed 2 squads of deamonettes on one flank with a herald of Tzeentch. My Crushers ate the guard squad and he began rolling on.

Turn one He brings everything on the board and every shot went at the Crushers in cover. He killed 2 and wounded 2 more.

Bottom 1 I bring on a Soul Grinder with toungue scatter to about 3" from one of his demolishers , I fire and immobilize it. GUO lands a few inches to the SG's left. I land both Fiend units off of the Crushers ICON. The crushers stay put to keep that Icon alive.

Top 2 He unloads on the grinder with both demolishers, bot it just immoblizes me. His sentinals move up the center to tie up my crushers, but as he shot them I took the crushers he could assault as casualties. I was completly on one side of the board and most his guns were on the other, he couldnt even get a shot at the GUO. 3 crushers all wounded are all thats left of the negotiators.

Bottom 2 I roll to get reserves and I got the other grinder, thats it. It landed, did nothing. GUO hit a vet squad and wiped it out. Demonettes roll a "5" for a fleet andmake the charge on the imoobile tank, wrecking it. One unit of fiends hits the sentinals in the center and whiffs, knocking off one weapon. The other unit hops into more cover. Immobile SG and herald knock out a sentinal near the GUO.

Top 3 He shoots most his army at the crushers and I go to ground and when the smoke clears only the icon with one wound remained. Pasques tank whiffs on the new SG. He fires everything at the GUO at the Nurgle deamon and puts 2 wounds on it. Sentinals kill my herald.

Bottom 3 I get the DP of Tzeentch and the Plague bearers from reserve. both land off of the icon. The unit of fiends in cover hits the last couple sentinals on my strong flank and wipe them out. GUO assaults the standing still Demolisher and does nthing but shake and stun it. Fiends continue knocking down sentinals in the center of the board with just one weaponless one left. SG pops a chimera onmy weak flank.

Top 4 He shoots everythin at me and kills the last crusher, kills the DP, kills some fiends and some deamonettes.

Bottom 4 I get the rest of my reserves. Screamers line up in front of pasques tank. Fiends from both units hit his last 4 chimeras all bunched up. I wreck or immobilize and stun all 4. One psyker squad falls out and is pinned. GUO kills a vet squad, demonettes kill the demolisher. SG that had phlem hit the sentinals and broke 2. Pink horrors shoot up whats left of a unit in the center of the bard going for an objective. One guardsman remains and he breaks.

Top 5 He shoots a couple fiends. Tries to tank shock with his chimera and rolls a "1" immobilizing it.

Bottom 5 Fiends kill his command squad, and Brother captain. Another fiend unit kills a psyker squad. SG finishes off the sentinals. GUO kills immobile chimera.

We roll and game ends.


He has a psyker squad, an immobile weaponless chimera, and pasques tank left. I have about 1800 points of deamons yet. I also hold the center objective.

I score 22/24. On to round 2 vs a drop pod wolf list.

How is the GUO working for you? I prefer more Tzeralds myself.

How are the screamers working too? They're a little specialized for my tastes, I find flesh hounds work well to synergize with the fiends. Plus those extra tzeralds could help with some of the anti-mech the screamers normally do.

The GUO is a beast to deal with and there is no fast answer to him without spending a lot of resources dealing with him. The Screamers, I find, survive better, and can deal with walkers, drop pods, and land raiders, things the "tzeralds" and hounds can not. The flesh hounds are more versatile though in that you can handle infantry or light vehicles, I prefer the screamers but its more a preference thing.

On to mission two.

The mission, roll for all pieces of terrain and on 1-3 its dangerous, on 4-6 it gives +1 to cover saves. There are 5 objectives and you need to hold 4 more than your opponent for a massacre.

His list

6 Drop pods all with 7 grey hunters and a wolf guard in termy armour with chain fist. The squads all had melta guns,and combi meltas.

He had 2 rune preists that went with 2 squads.

1 Squad had Arjac instead of the chainfist termy.

1 wolf guard unit in drop pod with 4 combi plasma, 4 combi meltas, and a chainfist termy.

3 squads of 5 missle launcher long fangs.

1 squad of 3 speeders, all double H bolters.


We roll for terrain and nearly every piece is on fire and dangerous terrain.
He wins roll off and chooses to go 2nd so he could react to my drops. I put him in the table quarter with no objectives. He deploys his 3 long fang squads on the edges of the quarter leaving a "hole" in the center of his quarter with the speeders against the edge of theshortedge.

Turn 1. I go first and get my 2ndry wave. I didnt want to land in his kill zone, and with the drop pod storm coming soon I wanted my units near each other to hit whatever lands to bolter me. I couldnt hide in the terrain since its dangerous and it would kill as many figures as the cover saves would save. I land my DP who kills a long fang sarge. Both heralds that keep a speeder from shooting and knock out a HB. My plague bearers land in terrain to keep the icon alive. 3 deamonette units land near each other near the objectives. I put the soul grinder away from the plague bearers so he had tochoose the pot shot at the grider or try killing the plague bearers.

Bottom 1 He lands both priests in grey hunter squads near deamonettes. Another grey hunter squad near the deamonettes, and Arjacs unit nextto the grinder. Arjac throws his hammer and blows up thegrinder. Grey hunters and priests unload and wipe two deamonette units down to 5 figurestotal. All the fangs, and speeders combine all fire and kill a herald.

Top 2 I get both fiends and crushers from reserves as well as the other grinder. I land near the PB icon but with all the pods, room is tight and both fiends have to land in dangerous terrain and take a wound each. Grinder is on the other side of 1 rune priest unitforcing him to take a single melta shot or move away. I phlem the unit and kill 3 wolves.I also got both screamer units. 1 mishaps due to scatter and he places it in the kill zone by all his missles and h bolters. The other lands away from the action. DP and herald combine and shoot down 4 wolves from a center squad. The DP charges, kills one and takes three wounds. Not what I needed. The full unit of deamonettes hits arjacs unit and kills only 2 marines. He kills 6 deamonettes in return. The rest of my deamonettes and the PB's charge the other priestunit to keep allhis lightning and murderous hurricanes from going off. I kill 3 marines and lose all 5 deamonettes as well as 3 PB's.

Bottom 2. He uses the beaten up priest unit to help out finishing up my PBs. He only gets one drop pod of troops from reserves and lands to start making a wall of drop pods isolating an objective. He wipes out my PB's and consolidates away from the crushers. He fires all h bolters and missles and kills one squad of screamers and kills 3 from the other. My DP kills another marine than fails his one save dying in the process. Shooting from new unit and pods kills 3fiends. Arjac and company lose antoher but finish off the deamonetes.

Top 3 no more reserves come in. Fiends hit one unit of marines and kills a priest and 2 more marines. He kills 1 Fiend and wounds another. SG kills 3 more marines with phlem, he fails morale and breaks, but no one is near him so he will rally next turn. Crushers have a wall od Drop pods in front of them and since his combi weapon squad has yet to drop I enter burning terrain for preservation. Another fiend unit hits the fresh arrivals and kills 5 marines. He kills a couple fiends in return. Herald shoots a fang squad in the open and kills 3, but they pass morale. Screamers assault a drop pod and kill it.

Bottom 3. His combi squad drops and unloads on the crushers. All other missles go to the crushers. I lose 3 crushers and 2 are wounded. Melees continue. I kill a marine or two, lose a fiend or two, and both fiend units hit and run out of melee. Screamers are assaulted and killed. His heavy bolters put 7 wounds on my herald and I fail 5 saves killing my herald.

Top 4 GUO shows up. Pink horrors show up as well. I drop the horrors near an objective in my corner he has nothing near. The GUO lands on the other side of his pod wall to contest his objective and take some heat off my army. Fiends assault Arjac and one grey hunter, do a wound to Arjac and die. The other fiends finish off a priest unit. SG assaults a drop pod to put a hole in his wall for the crushers.

Bottom 4. His last squad arrives and meltas the ass of my grinder blowing it up. A lot of shots at the crushers and he wipes them out. My last unit of Fiends is wiped out. The rest of his shooting goes into the GUO and he wounds me twice. Arjac assaults the GUO and I kill off Arjacs squad.

Top 5 GUO assaults another small squad and wipes it out. Pink horrors spread out in cover near my objective.

Bottom 5 All shooting goes into GUO and he finishes the GUO off. He only holds 3 objectives and I hold 1. We roll and game continues.

Top 6 He is sending a termy and greyhunter at my horrors as nothing else can get there. I shoot him up and kill the grey hunter.

Bottom 6 he assaults me after his shooting kills 2 horrors. No deaths in melee. We roll and game continues.

Top 7 I wound his termy and he rolls a "1" killing it. I hold the objective. Not much of his army can even seee my unit or reach it with bullets. I also am going to ground in a +1 cover save terrain pieace for 2+ cover save. We call it. On the last turn a two man squad ran to grab another objective. My horrors hold one giving him 3 more objectives than me.

It is a major loss and with that I lose my shot of winning Ard Boyz here. With 46 players, a major loss will not be recoverable. His army is badly beaten up with 10 "troops" on the board in various units but he has all his speeders, most fangs and his elite squad.

I needed him to go first as his pods could react to wherever I was landing, nueter the unit, and recieve the charge. He went on to finish third. It was a fun game and he was a great opponent. It was a back and forth fight with the scales tipping when the Fiend assaults failed to cripple the units they hit.

One more game and I had 25 points. The pressure was gone, but I wanted a big win to see how high into the standings I could propell. My last opponent was another wolf army and I was determined to get revenge for my 2nd round loss.

They were some tough breaks in the 2nd game for you and it happens. You had to go first and got the wrong wave in. Plus all the dangerous terrain was just bad. I wish your Blood Crushers could have gotten into melee as they would have eaten a lot of wolves. I think you did quite well considering all the things that made it a tough game for you.

My last game was against another Space wolf player. The mission was fairly standard being pitched battle with three objectives spread out along the centerline of the board. At turn 4 we roll to randomly determine which objective was worth three points and the other two would be worth 1 each. You need to win by 4 to get a massacre.

His list

5 Thunderwolves, 1 with TH

Lord with SS TH on foot with 9 grey hunters in Lanr Raider God hammer.
Grey hunter had melta gun, power weapon sarge, TH wolf guard.

2 squads of 9 grey hunters with meltas, power weapon sarges, and TH wolf guard attahced in rhinos

5 grey hunters with TH wolf guard in las razorback

5 scouts with wolf guard with power weapon

2 squads of long fangs each with sarge and 5 ML.

He wins roll off and has me go first. He deploys the fangs in cover near the center. A Thunderwolf unit on each side. Behind the long fangs were the 2 rhinos. On one flank he had the Land raider and razorback, scouts in reserve.


I figured he was as anxious as I was to get max points so I figures his T. wolves were itching for a fight early, lets hope Im right.


Turn 1. I get primary wave. Crushers land front and center 18" or so from his center Fangs. A fiend unit landed to their right and one behind. The GUO landed to their left in front of the Thunderwolves with the wolf lord. SG landed in the back. Both screamer units landed about 16" from his landraider and razorback. Pink horrors landed in front of my crushers and fiends. I hoped his wolves would bite. Horrors unload on the fangs and I kill 3. SG phlems the other squad killing two.

Bottom 1. He shoots all lascannons at my SG immobilizing it. One pack of wolves with the lord assaults the GUO and kills it. I wasnt expecting to die but nothing I could do about it. The other thunderwolf unit hits my horrors, but he got a little greedy and multi assaulted the fiends hoping to combat res me to death. My Fiends finally "woke-up" and killed two wolves and wounded another. Horros made decent saves, and he did kill 2 fiends. Drawn combat.

Top 2, I get 1 unit of deamonettes for reserves who land off the crushers. Crushers dash over to the T.wolf unit. I am still partly in cover so he will get to swing before my Power weapons. Fiends hit that unit as well so it should help. When the melee is finished, two crushers are wounded, 2 fiends are dead, but all his wolves are dead and the lord has two wounds. Screamers kill the razorback and knock a weapon off the land raider. Fiends and horrors finish off the last couple wolves.

Bottom 2 his scouts arrive and come in behind my SG. He has to run so he can assault next turn with his melta bombs. Land raider moves backwords rather than tank shock the screamers. The razor crew assaults and kills one unit of screamers. I finish off his lord.

Top 3 One unit of fiends hits the razor crew and kills three. He kills one fiend. My other fiend unit immobilizes a full rhino. Crushers bear down on the other rhino. DP of tzeentch and herald show up and unload on the scouts in cover killing 4.

Bottom 3 He assaults the soul grinder, melta hits, but he rolls a "1" for damage and I kill off the squad. He disembarks from a rhino and shoots up my fiends then assaults the fiends and deamonettes. I kill all but 2 and he gets away. He killed 2 fiends and 2 deamonettes.

Top 4 Most my army arrives and lands front and center. Objective near my horrors is the primary and nothing is threatening it so I relax a little. Crushers blow up the last rhino, Fiend chases the broken guys, SG with phlem kills two more fangs. Deamonettes go after the other last fang.

Bottom 4 His land raider unloads its squad and hits the screamers and a couple fiends. He kills everything off. His running away squad takes two last pot shots and kills the last fiend from that squad. One of his 1 man fang squads fires at the new SG hits, pens my AV13, and blows up the grinder. His last squad that got out of the blown up rhino shoots and assaults my crushers (it was that or get assaulted next turn). He is wiped out.

Top 5 Soul grinder with phlem, DP and heralds unload on the lords squad killing all the troops leaving the lord alive with a wound left. Both long fangs are hunted down.

Bottom 5 His lord woozy from the wounds, wanders near the Land Raider. Land Raider makes a dash for an objective to contest but immobilizes itself crossing terrain.

We roll and game ends.

He is left with an immobilized LR and a lord with a wound.

I get max score 24 points.



He was a good opponent who just had some poor rolls at key melees. The fiends were rolling well and when that happens they can be hard to stop.

The 24 points put me in 7th place out of 46.

I was happy with my deamons and I still think they can compete in a major tournament. There was no game out of my reach or over by turn three through all 9 games. I ended this years Ard Boyz with 6 massacres, 1 minor win, and 2 major losses. The losses were to the guy who finished third, and in the regionals the guy who won this years Chicago Ard boyz played me, and I took my other major loss. I was happy my friend Cole won ard boyz and we went to TGIFridays for some drinks and dinner. We are in a friendly thursday night league together and I told him if we meet rather than play the 1850 point game I want a rematch vs his damn Guard list.

Chicago was awesome, the tourney was run smoothly, and I always enjoy playing at the Bunker. Some of the ETC guys were their practicing for the Europe championships and it was nice to get to chat with some of the whos who in 40k. It is always interesting to me to talk to others about how they look at games or lists. The mood was light at the finals and I feel like I had my shot at the top tables. I played a top knotch opponent who beat me fair and square. I would much rather have an honest loss than a "ohh I forgot to do this and it cost me the game" moment or a "that guy pulled this shady move and I didnt call him on it and it bit me in the ass". Perhaps next year I will be able to win it and keep the trophy here in Madison.
