My friend and I just played our first game together. He was Tau and my Orks were throttling him in turn 2. We called it a night. I tried to talk him into adding markerlights to his dual Hammerhead 1000-point lineup, but he said he couldn't afford the Pathfinders. His accuracy was terrible, but I think it was poor dice. He had a handful of crisis suits, fire-knife maybe, and a nice unit of kroot, too. I think the Dawn of War scenario really hurt his chances. Any suggestions?

So how did the game actually play out?

Very good question!

Ipso facto auto-hit.

Turn 2 game over from DOW deployment? Wow, that must have gone really bad.

Well yea the silly silly boy wasted 360 points on two models...the sub round is great unless you have something not footslogger to worry about and/or you're on a table less than 4' wide...
To be fair he should have taken stealth suits over crisis suits, and should have gotten more models (dropped the kroot probably but its a matter of taste....) instead of that last hammerhead...one at 1000 pts is enough and pushing it...

It was Capture and Control though that had no effect. He went first but was unable to shoot anything due to DOW. I turbo boosted nob bikers with klaws and deffkoptas onto the board and huddled my big mob of shootas and trukks around Big Mek with KFF. The Nobs and koptas took off for his hammerheads which were deployed on hills in the opposite corners. He set up his kroot with hounds in the central forest area and had crisis and fire warriors behind them.
In the second round, he pretty much held that position and tried to shoot. Mostly he missed (are GW dice cub dice any good?) but he took out one biker (forgot to check morale for the trio) and landed a wound on a kopta. The got 3+ cover saves.
In my player turn I advanced everything and dumped two trukks of slugga boys close to his infantry. Deffkoptas shot at a hammerhead but the rokkit missed and the big shootas couldn't dent his front armor. I called a waagh but it had no effect because after running only one squad was in assault range. A unit of trukk boys assaulted his battle suits and he lost his commander and another one. The bikers reached the hammerhead and got in a few hits despite the 4+ needed to hit because he had moved it 6 inches. It exploded, so he called the game.
Think he had a chance if he stayed in or did we do something wrong tactically or rules-wise.
dbsamurai: I don't know much about Tau, but you're probably right about the excess hammerheads. If I was him, I would have hit faster with the kroot, danced the battlesuits out of assault range, focused fire on the trukks instead of the fast units, and tried to outrun the bikes with the hammerhead.
