Nathaniel sat uncomfortably on the bridge of his Battle Barge. Chapter Master Uriel had sent him an urgent message to make all haste to Corus V. There was an ancient Imperial listening post lying somewhere below him. It was there that he would find whatever it was that had caused Uriel to send him this close to the Maelstrom. He was tempted to have the servitors prep his Terminator armor, but he had already decided to send a small combat patrol to the surface. If Nathaniel was honest with himself, he was curious. What could be so important that Uriel would not only risk direct contact with the Imperium, but also prompted the leader of the Lost Sons to send elements of the 1st, 2nd and 4th companies to retrieve it. Like all of the successors of the Dark Angels, the Lost Sons followed their unique company structuring. However, almost a thousand years ago, their chapter had been declared Renegade by the Inquisition. Since that day, their entire chapter had been possessed with a single minded drive to find the missing Lion El'Johnson and clear their name.
I.
The early morning fog had just begun to burn off the surface of Corus V. Sergeant Darius had split his tactical squad into a pair of combat squads. Most of his bolters were off to his right, moving through some ancient ruins that looked akin to the one his own squad was moving through. Somewhere well off to his left was Scout Sergeant Simeon and his sniper team. They had moved out slightly ahead of the rest of the patrol in an effort to find the defunct communications center. He was under orders from Brother Captain Nathaniel to retrieve whatever he could find in the databanks of the center. There was a low rumble from the twin exhaust on a trio of battle brothers on their bikes. Darius looked to his right once more to check on his team.
It was in that moment that the pair of heavy bolters from a devastator squad opened up on the Sons' bikes, wrecking two before any of them could respond. Brother Tanis, who was farthest to the right in the battle line, calmly loaded his missile launcher from the relative safety of the decaying building. He noted with some satisfaction that though two entire loyalist squads had emptied their bolters, none of his brothers had been hit. With his launcher ready, Tanis waited for the Sergeant's order to fire. He didn't have to wait long either, as soon as the bolter assault began to lighten, the Sons returned fire. Tanis' frag missile landed in the middle of three of the marines in the bombed out hab unit across from his squad, killing one. In the intervening space between the Lost Sons squads, the lone biker gunned his machine towards the second tactical squad, twin bolters gunning down another marine. At almost the same instant, several sniper shots from the left fell among the devastators. Their loyalist armor held, but it was certain that Simeon had joined the fray.
II.
With the last biker so close to the loyalist lines, Darius could only watch as he was gunned down. He offered a short benediction for his brother that was cut short by the distant cries of his scouts. The devastators had turned both heavy bolter and a pair of launchers on the young initiates, crushing a pair of them under falling rubble even as another was vaporized by a krak missile. Off to the left, Brother Antoni was felled by a bolt round as his second squad continued to trade fire with the loyalist in the hab unit. Things were quickly coming apart, but they were space marines and they weren't dead yet.
He ordered his team to open fire on the marines that had just finished of the last biker. Caught in the open, Darius and his brothers were able to slay a pair of the loyalist who were out in the open between the devastators and the squad in the hab, whose covered held against Tanis and the others fire. Again Simeon's rifles spoke, this time felling a marine from the devastators. But in his heart, Darius knew it would not be enough.
III.
Suddenly, the devastators took an interest in Darius' squad. The ruins shook for an instant under the torrent of fire before collapsing and burying the sergeant and his men. Tanis shoved another frag missile into the tube as he watched the ruins crumble. His silent prayer was answered as their own covered held. This time there would be no order to return fire, but that didn't matter, he was a space marine and he didn't need an order.
There was a moment of almost perfect quiet as the loyalist changed clips. The moment was quickly shattered by the explosion of a Sons' missile and the cry of another dying loyalist in the hab unit. The explosion was followed by the distinct crack of sniper rifles and the squad of loyalist in the open was reduced to a single marine.
IV.
Tanis and his brothers shifted back into cover as both tactical squads open fire again. No bolters found there marks, but his relief was short lived. The devastators had a better angle from their elevated vantage point in the middle of the field. They opened up on the four marines, killing them to a man.
Sergeant Simeon was no coward, but he was also no fool. He glanced over to his lone remaining initiate. With a silent jerk of his head, Simeon began to melt back into the forest behind them. Brother Captain Nathaniel needed to know that the loyalist were here and that he had found the communications center. Simeon's face was grim. There was also the matter of vengeance, but that would have to wait.
This was just a small combat patrol played against me and my buddy. I've never failed so many armor rolls in my life and I swear he had heat seeking rounds in his heavy bolters. Its all in good fun though. I don't think he'll be so lucky next time though. The Lost Sons are quite determined to take that communications center and whatever data is hiding inside. Sorry I didn't have any pictures.
