That entirely depends on what type of game you want because while they are both technically dungeon crawlers, they are most certainly not the same game mechanically.

Ravenloft: Cooperative game where all players work to defeat the boardgame and share responsibility of controlling the monsters during the game. Uses D&D's ubiquitous background. Mediumweight game (Meaning fair amount of rules intensity but not too deep).

Dungeonquest: Fairly quick game that Gimli would love to play. "Certainty of death, small chance of success... What are we waiting for?" You will likely want to avoid conflict with monsters since there is no reward for battling them. FFG pasted on the theme of their own Terrinoth background onto the game (descent, runebound, runewars, etc). Somewhere between light and light mediumweight.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Get Descent: Journeys in the Dark instead.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

I would have said this until I got a hands on with Castle Ravenloft. Either is good but here is the difference:

In CR you randomly generate the board everytime. This makes it interesting but it can also mean that you step out of the starting room and are killed.

Descent is more organized but requires more setup time and investment.

Really you can't go wrong either way.

That and you dont have a guy who runs only the monsters. Castle Ravenloft being cooperative is a fairly big step in dungeon crawls mechanically.

That said, Descent isnt for everyone. I love dungeon crawls and I absolutely abhor Descent. If all you want is a hack and slash dungeon that plays like a video game then its adequate and if thats the sort of expectation you have in a dungeon crawl then it may be for you.

If you are primarily interested in RP, buy neither. And don't buy Descent, either. (This is the kind of thing that can usually go without saying but you never know.) I haven't played CR and don't know if I will but I am really eager to see how the cooperative, no-GM mechanic works. Descent is pretty balls-to-the-wall for "DM" and players alike. Like Talisman and Runebound, it encourages the type of cutthroat competition that can lead to hard feelings. I haven't played DungeonScape but that's because . . . the new version hasn't come out yet. TBH, I will not likely get it. Looks pretty boring compared to Descent. Also, keep in mind that Descent has a number of worthwhile expansions out already. I'd say your best bet is to get it and wait for more people to review DungeonQuest.
