Seize ground - Dawn of war -
BA won roll off
Pregame assessment:
I'm feeling good about my chances. My list is solidish. My opponent is still learning his army. My last experience with nids was in 3rd edition and my imp guard pie'd them to death. Okay, so I really don't have any relevant reason to feel good other than its a great day to game!
Deployment:
Two troops and one
HQ. I deploy as close to the mid point as I can to force him back into his zone. He counters with some termies and his tyrant w/ guard
BAT1
I move everything onto the table. Good players have a plan when they move stuff onto the table. They castle, they protect, they feint, and they attempt to force their opponent's hands. I just moved stuff on. I wanted to be able to shoot regardless of where he moved on. I move my libby back to join an assault squad. I also move my two razorbacks back to press my range advantage. I try to shoot, but night fighting prevents me from seeing the bugs.
NidsT1
The bugs move onto the table and run / fleet as close as they can. The carnies see my right razorback, but their shots scatter off.
BAT2
The plan: I don't know much about nids, but I know the tyrant can be kinda scary. I know the raveners are pretty buff in assault. I'll take the shots I can get. At this point its raveners and a trygon.
Actual: I move the stormraven forward. It is carrying my termies and the dread. I also want to get a better shooting angle. I move the left Baal up to get a shooting angle. I move the left razorback back. The assault squads move forward a little. The right Baal moves forward to shoot at the trygon. The right razorback moves back. All the shots on the left side kill three raveners. All the shots on the right put a wound on the trygon.
NidsT2
Move then run / fleet. Pretty standard. The zoeys manage to wreck the raven. The dread and termies pile out towards the nids. This was a little cocky on my part. He multi assaulted me with his hormies. His hormies managed to kill a termie before being wiped out by my dread and termies. He really couldn't get the assault on my terminators without also involving the dread.
BAT3
The plan: I am licking my chops! I've got flamers within range of several of his squads and they are bunched together. I move my dread forward to engage his zoeys. I move my termies forward to engage his two troops squads. I move both of my assault squads forward to flame his troop squads.
Actual: The dread moves forward, heavy flamer hits three zoeys, roll to wound!
Ugh! Ah well, I'll just assault them...
The assault squads burn hormies and termies. The Baal lines up on the trygon. Four hits! Roll to wound!
Wha?! The game is still totally going in my favor. On to assault.
The dread charges, three hits, two wounds, all saved! My termies charge his hormies and termies. His termies are wiped out and assault moves in around his hormies. Look out for the counter charge. My assault squads assault his hormies and termies. Wiped out. Look out for the counter charge.
NidsT3
His ravengers assault my termies. The terminators manage to kill all the ravengers and hormies. They loose one in the process. I consolidate towards his tyrant and guards. His carnies and trygon assault my assault squads. Nom, nom, nom. The squad with priest and libby are wiped out to a man. The other squad with a priest manages to escape and ends up two inches from the table edge. The zoeys continue to make their saves.
BAT4
Okay, those carnies are kinda scary. I just lost a quarter of my scoring units. The game I thought I had in hand is now starting to look interesting.
The plan: The left side is under control. Assault his tyrant and guards with my terminators. Grab the left rear objective with my assault squad and razorback. Run my right razorback away from his carnies and trygon. Run my assault squad into cover. Continue to shoot at the trygon.
Actual: I run like a little B from the carnies and trygon. The Baal and razorback manage to take the trygon out. A zoey finally fails a save. I loose a terminator and he looses a guard.
NidsT4
The carnies explode the right Baal. The tyrant and guards kill all my termies. Ouch. His stealers move back to capture his right objective.
BAT5
The plan: Contest his objective with my razorback. Move my assault squad onto an objective. Move my Baal to shoot at his carnies.
Actual: The right razorback moves to contest the right nid objective. The assault squad grabs the closest objective.
NidsT5
The carnies remove the assault marines from the right rear objective. The stealers assault the razorback, but fail to glance or pen.
Roll to see if the game ends... He rolls and the game does not continue.
BA win 1 - 0.
Post game:
Wow. This game turned around real quick. I went from cruising to running in a half turn. I am far from a nid expert, maybe dakka can offer some list advice. I can say the carnies were pretty scary. Hope you enjoyed!
