the basic idea is that a Dark Eldar raid on a Tau world ended in them stealing a rather significant number of the Tau children. They were brought back to dark, creepy rooms or what ever and tortured mercilessly. A lot of them died, but some refused to let go. Years later, the Tau Empire locates the Tau that were kidnapped and goes to rescue them. They succeed in their effort, but on the flight back to what ever Tau planet they were heading to, the kidnapped tau, now broken scarred, and practically feral, turned on their liberators. This was not expected and the rescue party was completely wiped out. The kidnapped took the ship as their own, as well as the crisis suits and vehicles stored within. In modern day, the Dark Tau are still sometimes seen, raiding ships for supplies and profit. They don't care who they attack, they just want to insure that they inflict as much pain and suffering on others as possible. Sadists, the lot of them.

Suggestions on how to improve this fluff, flesh it out? I have a terrible imagination you see.

Well, you'd have to explain why the DE didn't take the Tau back to Commoragh, their main 'dwelling'. Commoragh is in the Webway, which the Tau can't see in, and therefore can't save the kiddies.

However DE are "mysterious". So you don't really need much more of a reason than that. Or, the Kabal/Cult that raided them were made up of the lowest from other Kabals/Cults which would also explain why they raided the Tau in the first place, as the Tau don't have a soul (which is why DE raid and take prisoners, for souls, and fun XD) IIRC.

Then you'd need to explain why the Tau rescuing them didn't bring a Etheral with them. Otherwise the Dark Tau wouldn't be broken and feral, as the Etherals usually keep that in check some how. Maybe they died rescuing them, as DE love psykers.
