Had a game with my mate Dave who brought his Tyranids. I'm testing the Baal Predator today but using flamestorm cannon, will see how it goes.

Deployment

Dave won the roll off and deployed first as he needs to get into assault a.s.a.p, this was fine for me because I could deploy where I want and then he comes towards my guns. Dave deployed his Tyrant, Trygon Carnifex and 5 x Warriors in the administratum ruin where an objective was placed. He deployed his 3 x Warriors and Termagants near a objective in a crater and the Mawloc behind them. The Hormagaunts hid behind the administratum ruin.

I deployed my armour with the Baals at the front. I had one unit claiming a objective in the factorum ruin already and the crater 2 objective was about 6" away from me.

*Tactical Notes

I'm going to zoom the Baals forward 18" to get into range, maybe 12" as there isn't a huge distance away. I'll torrent his Hive Tyrant with plasma and lascannons as it's a threat to my armour and has the least amount of wounds out of the big boys. I'll go for the Trygon next as it will make mince meat out of my tanks and can move damn fast, then the Mawloc when it comes in and the Carnifex. I'll wait until the Zoanthropes come down and I'll torrent them with fire power. After that it's a general mop up of units, I'll use the Baals on the large swarms and turn them on the Genestealers when they arrive.

Turn 1

Dave smartly burrows his Mawloc ready for some turn 2 deep striking and keeps his big boys in cover so they don't get blasted by lascannons and plasma guns. Only movement he does is sweep his Termagants and combat Warriors around.

Dave open fires with all his venom cannons at my tanks but it has bad luck and all scatter or either do nothing.

In my movement turn I move both Baals forward, one goes through terrain ok. I move a Razorback carrying the 5 man flamer unit along with the elite Priest through terrain to support them. I move two other Razorbacks through terrain, one gets immobilised and the other passes ok claiming the objective but it's still in terrain.

Shooting I blast the Hive Tyrant and knock a wound off. I blast the Baals at the Termagants and kill a few and also wound a Ravener. That's about it.

*Tactical Notes

Ok I'm a bit disappointed the Baals wasn't closer, perhaps I should have moved 6" and kept them away and then next turn move up and unleash the flame o' death. Live and learn I guess.

Next turn I'm expecting one of those Baals to be assaulted by the Trygon, no doubt it will be toasted.

Next turn I'll move the Baals forward unleash the pain and bail out the supporting flamer Assault Squad and get them to charge the combat Warriors, hopefully the Baals will wipe out the Termagants and the Assault Squad give those Warriors a kicking either contesting or claiming a objective.

Turn 2

Dave calls for reserves but nothing comes on :(

He moves his Termagants towards my Razorback carrying the 5 man flamer Assault Squad as the Trygon and Raveners move through terrain to assault both Baals. Rest he keeps put. The Mawloc emerges between my Razorbacks landing on target, Dave rolls to damage 3 Razorbacks but fails to do damage on any of them :(

Shooting Dave blasts venom cannons at my armour I don't think he does a lot besides shake or stun the Razorback on the crater 2 objective.

In assault the Trygon charges a Baal Predator and makes it go boom. The Raveners multi assault the flamer Assault Squad Razorback and also the other Baal, Razorback takes no damage but the Baal is crew shaken.

In my movement turn I bail out the 5 man flamer Assault Squad with the Priest ready to blast and charge the Raveners as there Razorback moves round to blast the Trygon. The other flamer Assault Squad holding the factorum objective bail out and move towards the Raveners also. All melta unit and a single Honour Guard squad bail out the Razorbacks ready to blast and assault the Mawloc if mass las/plas spam fails. Lastly I move the shaken Baal 18" away from the fight to hold a rear guard.

Shooting turn I torrent the Trygon with plasma and lascannons and it dies. I blast the Hive Tyrant and put another wound on it. I blast the Mawloc with plasma, lascannons and melta and it dies. I blast the Raveners with flamers and bolt pistols killing one and leaving another with only a single wound.

In assault both flamer Assault Squads pile into the Raveners, thanks to feel no pain I take no wounds and the Raveners die - my squads consolidate away from the Tyranid lines.

*Tactical Notes

Ok I've lost a Baal which I expected though I was hoping to still have one operational and use it on the Termagant horde. I'm glad the Trygon and Mawloc died, both are heavy hitters and can chew through my tanks without any problems. The Raveners also died which can be annoying, but they wasn't a huge problem.

Next turn I'll focus fire on the Hive Tyrant and Carnifex and start to move Honour Guard towards those Warriors on the administratum objective and charge in, I'll bring the Baal forward for some flamestorm nastyness and hopefully put some wounds on the Carnifex too. The flamer Assault Squads I'll move up and charge those combat Warriors.

Turn 3

Dave calls for reserves and the Lictor comes on, without a good place to put the Lictor Dave just hides him in a ruin close to my armour.

Not much movement from Dave this time besides moving his Termagants through terrain to get at one of my flamer Assault Squads.

Dave does some more shooting but if I remember right he doesn't have much luck against my armour :( He fires what fleshborers what he can at my Assault Marines but doesn't score any wounds!

In assault Daves Termagants move through assault to get my Assault Marines, though the Termagants lose combat and take some no retreat wounds thanks to been in synapse.

*As you can see from the picture below pizza arrives from deep strike via Thunderhawk insertion!

In my turn I move the 5 man flamer Assault Squad towards the Termagant battle. I send a melta Assault Squad towards the Termagant battle also. I move a Razorback carrying a melta unit by the factorum objective as I no longer need melta as all the big bad guys are dead or not a lot left. I move the Honour Guard on foot towards the Warriors on the administratum objective while the Honour Guard in the Razorback move through terrain and get immobilised, I move another Razorback through terrain and immobilise that too, great! In support of the Honour Guard on foot I mvoe remaining armour forward ready to blast whatever is up ahead.

Shooting I blast the Hive Tyrant and wipe it out and put a single wound on the Carnifex.

In assault I charge the Termagants with the other two units, the two units which are charging leave only 4 Termagants left before they attack back lol, the 'Gants don't kill anything thanks to feel no pain and they're destroyed.

*Tactical Notes

It's going well now, the Hive Tyrant is dead leaving the Carnifex as the only ranged support on the field. Towards the crater objective only 3 Warriors stand before my Angels. All objectives around by me I securely have.

Dave still has his Zoanthropes and Genestealers to arrive yet. Depending on where he puts them I'll use the Baal or flamer Assault Marines on the 'Stealers and blast the Zoanthropes with S8 and S9 fire or rapid fire plasma hoping to I.D them or torrent them with fire power.

Turn 4

Dave calls for reserves and this time has more luck with the 'Thropes and 'Stealers coming in. The Zoanies drop in behind my armour close to the Baal as the 'Stealers outflank and come behind the Razorback holding the factorum objective.

Dave moves his Hormagaunts towards the combat Warriors ready to reinforce them next turn. He runs his Genestealers towards my Razorback.

Shooting the Zoanthropes attempt to fire at a Razorback, I use a psychic hood but fail to stop the powers. One warplance hits the other misses and pops a Razorback. The Carnifex blasts a Razorback but scatters onto a flamer Assault Squad which wiped out the Termagants and kills two of them.

In assault the 'Stealers assault the Razorback and make it go boom, a few 'Stealers are kill in the explosion. The Carnifex charges the Razorback it shot at but only stuns it. The Lictor charges a immobilised Razorback but only scores weapon destroyed, losing the plasma gun and stuns it.

In my turn I move the melta Assault Squad from the Razorback wreckage and into terrain on the factorum objective piece, if the 'Stealers try to assault me at least they now go last. I move the Baal towards them but it gets grounded in terrain, god famn it, I just hope it's close enough! I run the Honour Guard on foot into the administratum terrain piece, while the other Honour Guard unit bail out the Razorback to blast the Zoanthropes as a unit of melta Assault Marines come to support them.

Shooting I blast bolt pistols and the Baal at the Stealers and kill a few. I blast the Carnifex and it's dusted. I blast the Zoanthropes and leave one with a wound left. I wipe out the Lictor with las/plas fire.

In assault I charge the Genestealers and leave 3 left and lose a Marine, combat is a draw. I multi assault the Zoanthropes and Myceptic Spore with the Honour Guard and Librarian, I cast unleash rage ok and power weapon the Spore to death and butcher the Zoanthropes; the Thropes kill themselves thanks to no retreat! saves as they're fearless lol. I charge the 5 man flamer Assault Squad into the Warriors, combat rages on but a Warrior is dead.

* Tactical Notes

Ok Daves anti tank is gone, he just has Genestealers left which are tied up in assault. I want those Stealers gone so I can claim the objective so next turn I'll pile the Honour Guard into them which killed the Zoanthropes and let them taste power weapons. I hope to also wipe out those Warriors so next turn I'll move available squads to reinforce the flamer Assault Squad in combat. I will also assault the Warriors holding the administratum objective and power weapon those to death.

Turn 5

Dave moves his Hormagaunts to support his combat Warriors. I suggest him charging his other Warriors at my Honour Guard as he can shoot them and it's better to assault than be assaulted, plus I'll only assault him next turn anyway.

Dave blasts my Honour Guard with death spitters and a venom cannon, the V.C scatters back and wounds a Warrior lol.

In assault the flamer Assault Squad hang on after being assaulted by loads of Hormagaunts they receive 45 attacks with only 15 wounds, but still kicking. The Warriors charge the Honour Guard and kill oen but the Warriors take some pain too. The Stealers vs Assault Marines rages on after combat si a draw after boht sides lose a model.

In my turn I move the other Honour Guard towards the Stealers. I move every single Assault Squad towards the Hormagaunts while one squad gets back into the Razorbacks and claims the crater 2 objective.

No shooting from me as everything is in combat.

Honour Guard kill the Warriors and consolidate onto the objective and contest it. The Genestealers go down and the melta Assault Squad claims the objective. The Assault Squads pour into the Hormagaunts and kill 18 of them! The remaining Hormagaunts and Warriors die thanks to 18 no retreat! saves per unit letting me claim the crater objective.

Blood Angels win tabling Tyranids and claiming 4 out of 5 objectives while contesting one.

Summary

Yay! Go Angels! Firstly, I found the flamestorm Baal Predator loads better. It's kind of a one trick pony as it rolls up unleashes the pain and then dies but its' only 115 points so not mega points. I like it anyway.

I think the list did well though I didn't use my mass power weapon Honour Guard much, I need to sort that, however the two Priests in those units work well. The 6 man Assault Squads also work well too but I'm not sure on the hand flamers TBH, I'll give them another go.

When discussing units through out the game Dave said he is going to drop those Warriors geared for combat, TBF I've mentioned to him before they're not that brilliant. I think another unit of Raveners would work well for him. Some ranged anti tank is also what he needs too. Dave did mention he's not happy with the Hive Tyrant due to points, I suggest a walking Tyrant with double devourers, a Tyrant Guard and old adversary to make the Hormagaunts mean. He also mentioned about getting more Genestealers which I think would do him well also instead of another unit, like that Lictor for example. Will have to see I guess.

Well, it's geared up Razorspam Blood Angels vs. a Tyranid list that couldn't really be considered optimized. I can't say the outcome wasn't expected.

The report was good but the armies seem very lopsided. The marines look refined as a good all comer list but the nids don't seem to have much flow or idea behind them. Nid player needs to drop the mawloc, carni and warriors and get at least a tervigon and some more anti tank shooting like hive guard.

Dave has been playing about 4 months. I wrote a pretty decent list for him sometime ago but he wants to learn stuff for himself; even though I've already told him those combat Warriors suck lol.

He's going to make some changes he said. Can only let a Horse to water, cannot make it drink

There is a certain amount of tweaking that needs to be done wih any list to fit your playstyle, so I imagine he has been working on that. I wouldn't run the Mawloc either, I think a Trygon is loads better. Tyranids are a tough army to get a feel for now, especially with all the Mech and the options for busting it seem bad. I actually like the Tyrannofex in that role in spite of its cost with a good number of Raveners and Hive Guard are great for smashing transports.

Otherwise, I feel Tyranids need to counter mobility by pinning the opposing army into a corner and pushing forward which is hard to do sometimes.

Edit: Mercer I would really love to see the outcome against a Chimera spam IG list and your Razor list!

Will do. Good thread that. I've already told him what's decent stuff TBH, though he wants to discover units on his own and stick to stuff he's got instead of proxying but I think he knows proxy is the way forward for the time being.

Indeed he has mate

I didn't rate the Mawloc as it's hit and miss. Ok Dave had some bad luck not doing anything to three tanks but next turn I leathered it so it was 170 points worth of waste. Trygons are far better.

I like Tyranids and for me they work well, they just need other units to give them benefits, which I don't think some people take into consideration.

Justicar Alaric has used my Guard list before as he's thinking about doing a new army, I'll try and get him to use my Guard which has plenty of Chimeras and use my Angels

TBH as said above the list for the tyranid player is very boring and not really competative.

its interetsing how you managed to pop all his MC's though i like that.

IMO i would take 2 terivigons, a unit of 30 CC gaunts and work around that with more MC's.

chuck mal'antai in there and you have a good basis for a strong army

thats along the line of something my mate plays. he also throws in 2 trygons for awsomeness, or distraction, which ever it still works fine.

The Tyranid player is relatively new, as already mentioned I've recommended the best units but he wants to discover things on his own, plus it's models he has. I think he's moving over to the proxy side lol.

Killing his monstrous creatures isn't hard with all the plasma and lascannons I've got

I think a full unit of lictors would be good against razor spam with all the s6 shots when they come in. I'm not really a fan of podding zoes. I think starting them on the field works much better for target saturation and they never seem to come in when you need them.

The problem with Lictors is the squad attacks one tank, unless can multi assault. Though, they're decent for tackling tanks.
