Vancouver, B.C.

Hi this is my first battle reports, and I dont know my opponents exact list but here we go

Necrons

HQ: Nightbringer:360

Necron Lord, Destroyer Body, Res Orb, Phylactery, Warscythe: 195

Elites: None

Troops:

10xNecron Warriors:180

10x Necron Warriors:180

10x Necron Warriors:180

Fast Attack:

4xDestroyers:200
7xScarabs:84
1xWraith:41

Heavy Support:

1x Heavy Destroyer:65

I dont know exactly what his list was, but this is what I remember

1 Tervigon
3 Zoanthrope
3 Hive Guard
30 Hormagaunts
30 Termagaunts (Brood Lord Started with this squad)
25 Genestealers
15 Gnarlis Gene stealers(not sure how they are spelled, but the special version of Genestealers)

The board was about 5 feet wide, and 3 feet long
The board's terrain was basically random trees, with 3 buildings along the center line, seperated by 18 inches each.
Mission:Annihilation
Deploymentitched Battle

I won the roll and decided he could deploy first

He kept both units of genestealers in reserve, and then bulked all of his units into the middle, with the Hormagaunts up front, the Termagaunts behind, and the Tervigon with the Zoanthropes to their left.

I deployed Nightbringer, and the Destroyer Lord in the center, about 6 inches behind the center building. To the right was a unit of warriors, with the Scarabs in front of them and the units of Heavy and regular Destroyers behind them, grouped around a set of trees. Further right is another unit of warriors, slanted towards the Tyranid battle group. On the far left of this whole group is my final unit of warriors, facing the Hive Guard and far away from the main bulk (at first this seemed like a bad deployment, but it saved me in the game).

Tyranid Turn 1

He charged all his units down the center, right beside the building. They got almost half way down in the movement phase, and then ran the Hormagaunts and the Termagaunts but they barely got anywhere. His Zoanthropes shot a blast weapon (not sure what its called) and brought down 4 Warriors on my farthest right unit. That was it for his turn

Necron Turn 1

Two out of four downed warriors stand back up. I move up the scarabs to right before the Hormagaunts.I moved up my warriors to get with in rapid fire range. I move up Nightbringer right up behind the building, and move the wraith and Destroyer Lord into the building, only a few inches away from the Hive Guard. I move up my left warrior squad to try and get in range of the Hive Guard, but I fail. In shooting phase, I had horrible rolls and only brought down 5 Hormagaunts out of 28 shots with the Warriors. My destroyers shot at the Zoanthropes, and only wounded one of them. My Heavy Destroyer shot at the Tervigon, and wounded it, but he saved it with the invuln. In assault, my wraith and DL assault the Hive Guard, and wound one of them, and my wraith goes down (complete waste of points). I assault the Hormagaunts, and they get completely wiped out in one turn.

Tyranid Turn 2

He brings his Gnarlis Genestealers out of reserve, and they start in the center building, right next to the Nightbringer. For some reason, they were all upped to Strength 5 for this turn only, some sort of special rule I think. So he moved all of his Hormagaunts up to within a few inches of my center warrior squad, and the Termagaunts moved about 8 inches behind them. The Tervigon and Zoanthropes move a few more inches. The Blast was shot at my warriors, both shots missing, and one scattering and killing 3 Hormagaunts (Yes!). In the assault phase, all the Genestealers assault my Nightbringer, where they wound him 3 times (scariest part of the match). The tyranid player then thought he had me beat as he moved in his Hormagaunts to assault the warriors, but he did not know about the Etheric Tempest Special rule for Nightbringer. As soon as they assaulted, I used the Special rule and they moved out of combat. Night bringer only killed 2 Genestealers.

Necron Turn 2

I move all my warriors into Rapid Fire range of the Hormagaunts (if I didnt wipe them all out this turn than I was guaranteed to lose). Everyone else was either locked in combat, or in the right position (Destroyers and Heavy Destroyer). I open fire on the Hormagaunts, and kill all except 5 of them. I then fired on them with the Destroyers and finish them off. The heavy Destroyer finishes off a Zoanthrope. The Nightbringer kills a few more Genestealers, and the DL finishes off a Hive Guard (only 2 more left).

Tyranid Turn 3

He moves up The Termagaunts into firing range, moves up the Tervigon and Zoanthropes closer towards the right warrior squad. He fires on my center warrior squad and manages to kill 5 of them with 16 hits (horrible rolls). However he is not within assault range so the warriors are safe for another turn. The Zoanthropes fire again, and kill another warrior. The Nightbringer kills a few more Genestealers (There are probably 5-7 left). DL and Hive Guard stuck in combat

Necron Turn 3

4 warriors stand back up in the center squad. I move back my warriors as far as they can go, and move all the Destroyers to a further position behind the Trees. The Center warriors fire on the Termagaunts and kill a few. The right warrior squad (about 7 left) fires on the Zoanthropes, and wound another one. The Nightbringer finishes off the Genestealers (1 survives and falls back) and he consolidates 3 inches towards the DL and Hive Guard Conflict, where the DL is wounded.

Tyranid Turn 4

He rolled for the rest of his Genestealers, and gets them. They deploy on his board edge, far away from any combats. He charges all the Termagaunts forward, and gets withing firing/assaulting range. His Zoanthropes and Tervigon move forward and are just barely short of assaulting the right warrior squad. He fires on the Warriors, kills one. The Zoanthropes shoot at the right warrior squad and kills another 2 (down to 5). He assaults my center warrior squad, and then kills all of them except for one (I have no idea how he survived). His one Gnarlis Genestealer keeps on moving towards his board edge.

Necron Turn 4

Only 5 out of 8 warriors are eligible to get up, and only 3 of those do. They then automatically join the other squad and are placed away from the combat. I then move the warriors as far to the right as possible, and move the destroyers over to behind them. The Nightbringer Moves over to right next to the Hive Guard. And the left warriors move towards the fleeing Gnarlis Genestealers. My farthest right warrior squad fires on the Zoanthropes and kills one and wounds another one. The destroyers then fire on the Zoanthrope, wound it 8 times, and it somehow passes all 8 armour saves. The Heavy Destroyer then fires on the Zoanthrope and misses. The Nightbringer and The Destroyer Lord FINALLY kill the Hive Guard and then consolidate towards the Genestealers 5 and 6 inches (Really bad idea on my part).

Tyranid Turn 5

He keeps on moving his Termagaunts toward my destroyers, however they are way too far away to assault. He moves his Tervigon closer and then makes 13 more Termagaunts (such a crazy special rule). He also moves his one last Zoanthrope forward. It fires one last blast, and makes a lucky roll and kills 3 more Warriors. Neither the Tervigon or the Termagaunts are within range to assault. However, the Genestealers assault my DL and Nightbringer, uses a special rule to make sure my Nightbringer cant attack back. Only one model can actually hurt him, but he never actually wounds him. The rest of the Genestealers attack my Destroyer Lord and kill him.

Necron Turn 5

1 Warriors comes back, and my DL fails his test (huge bummer). All my warriors fire on the Zoanthrope, and it finally goes down. Easy kill point. My Destroyers fire on the Tervigon, and wound it 4 times. Then The Heavy Destroyer fires on the Tervigon and brings it down to one wound. My warriors fire on the Gnarlis Genestealer and kill it. Another kill point. My Nightbringer kills a few genestealers.

Tyranid Turn 6

He moves his Termagaunts into firing range, and move his Tervigon and Termagaunts right next to my right warrior squad. His Termagaunts fire on my Heavy Destroyer, and kill it. He then assaults me with his Tervigon and 13 Termagaunts. The Termagaunts strike first, and manage to only kill one of my warriors. Now the craziest part of the battle happens. My Warriors strike back against the Tervigon, and kills it. Another Kill point. My Nightbringer used Gaze of death, and killed 9 more Genestealers, made them flee, and then caught up and destroyed them. Another kill point.

Necron Turn 6

There was not too much to do in this turn, as I am winning and dont want to do anything stupid. So I just shot a few more times at the Termagaunts, and killed maybe 8 more. This ended the game. Final score Necrons: 6 kill points Tyranids: 5 kill points

This was a very intense game and my first game against Tyranids

Post-battle thoughts
-Tyranids are rediculously good, and I barely won this game
-Some people are opposed to the Nightbringer, but he basically won this game for me with probably over 600 points killed, and saiving my center warrior squad
-Wraiths are useless until they give them power weapons, or at the very least rending.
-Heavy Destroyers are amazing, but only in squads of 3
-Destroyers are amazing, and should be included in every Necron army.
-Its always useful to have one of your squads at least slightly away from combat to prevent Phase-out.

Please comment and give suggestions, as this is my first report

Cool, just posted my first battle report also. And tyranids are hard to beat it seems when played by a good player. Tyranids are like my bane.

I thought for sure I was gonna lose. Nightbringer saved my ass, as well as the Destroyers and Warriors just doing so much. Tyranids are easily in the top 3 best armies, as they can have massive amounts of models, who are all reasonably decent

Nice batrep necrons seem rough to play considering everyone should always just phase them out

Necrons are a solid army all around, but they aren't very flexible due to lack of equipment upgrades, one troop choice, and just an overall slow moving, heavy hitting ranged combat with few close combat units strategy to them. They are absolutely amazing against ultramarines, but they arent very good against Tau, Space Wolves, and they are limited against Nids. They are a great army to play with. My army list was somewhat flawed here (I should have taken out the wraith, scarabs, and heavy destroyer, and included more warriors, or cut another destroyer and included a monolith). Phase Out is a pain, but if it wasn't there then Necrons would be the best army in the game due to WBB

I play marines and amazingly have never lost to a necron player, in fact I've never had one last past turn 3.

I'm looking forward to their new codex because I find them underpowered, slightly overcosted and well pretty bad all in all

Was actually surprised to see you won. Nids are very close combat and crons are pretty bad at it

Thats pretty funny, cus I have never lost to regular marines. If people are smart with their army lists and tactics, they can easily destroy MEQ armies, as well as a few horde armies such as Orks and Tyranids. The problem with Necrons is they have units with very limited potential. Flayed Ones need to have power weapons, or at least more attacks. Pariahs are rediculously bad (no WBB, low initiative and strength and toughness), I already covered Wraiths, and Heavy Destroyers need to have twin linked guns for their points cost. The whole army costs alot of points and needs alot of finetuning to make them more accessible to the average player. Thats not to say they aren't competive. They have the best Independant Characters, best heavy vehicle, arguably the most powerful troops, and Destroyers. They all are amazing, but they cost the most points. Trust me, i was as surprised as you to win against a close combat army.

Nice Batrep. And gratz on the close win!

A few oopsies on the Nid player's part though. First off, in the army list you have the broodlord in the termagants unit, and unfortunately he isn't an IC, he is an upgrade to a genestealer unit. (I think he might have been ok, as during the report you mentioned the C'Tan being unable to strike back for a turn when in combat with the 'stealers, and this is one of the Broodlord's specials, ergo the BL was actually in the right place?)
Another goof is you mentioned that In your turn one your Heavy Destroyer shot at the tervigon and wounded him, but he passed an Invuln. Unfortunately Tervigons don't have those...He might have been using the tervi's FNP power, But If I remember correctly and the Heavy Destroyer's weapon is AP 2, he shouldn't have gotten that either.

Mostly, minor things. The tervi wound would have knocked him out a turn earlier, but it seems to have worked out alright for you in the end anyway. It looks like you did a good job with an old codex.

*insert witticism here*

Tyranids (W/D/L): 33-1-2 (local meta hates mech )
Tau (W/D/L): 4-1-2 (victories thanks to Kill team. lol)

I don't agree that tyranids were top3 armies. With well planned necron army it is easy to win any army below top3 I say that top 3 are 1. Imperial guard 2. Space wolfs 3. Orks All thease armies have many choises and they are easy to play. Still that was good battle! Against nids I have W 9 D 8 L 9

I think that the Brood lord did his job, but the genestealers came in a bad position and at a bad time. Plus honestly, how is anything gonna stand up to a nightbringer for more than a few turns. With the tervigon, he had the FNP, and he does get it because it needs to be either a power weapon or a instant kill. You may be right as I am not the most well versed in rules, however, i Dont think it would have made much of a difference

I think that tyranids have many choices and are easy to play. Plus I have beaten Orks (3W 1D 0L) easily every time. I have had problems with Space Wolves (0W 1D 2L). I have never even played against Imperial Guard. I dont think it is ever easy to win against skilled players, but necrons are a solid army, they just need a little work

Why the one Heavy destroyer and the one wraith?

Admittedly, this was a bad deployment, and the wraith provided my adversary with an easy kill point. However, the Heavy Destroyer got a wound on the Tervigon, and 2 wounds on the Zoanthropes, so he pretty much made his points. I suppose having another two would have been great, but the points dont really justify in a 1500 points game. No vehicles, and my destroyers could do the same job. I wish I had another destroyer but I only have 4

makes sense than, heavy destroyers just arent worth it for what they are.

Destroyers are just about perfect, buddy runs 3 squads of 3. the Deceiver and X squads of X warriors as needed

If you ever run into guard I wish you luck, I consistently phase him out T 2-3. opposed to 3-4 with marines

Like I said good game, was a fun batrep to read. Hope your new dex comes out soon

heavy destroyers would be good if they had Twin linked. I need to play guard, but I have no idea what army I would run. obvs not a monolith, nightbringer, or cc crons. Maybe just a gakload of warriors, destroyers, immortals and a couple of buff up necron lords. Toss out 100 shots a turn and then I could probably churn out a victory. Evaluate this list for me:

HQ
Necron Lord
Res Orb
Phase Shifter
Veil of Darkness 200 points

Elites:
10 Immortals 280 points

Troops:
40 Warriors 720 points

Fast Attack:

6 Destroyers 300 points

There that gets me 80 RF shots from the warriors, Str4 AP5. 20 Str5 AP4 from the Immortals, and 18 Str6 AP4 from the Destroyers against any vehicles. I could probably kill at least half to a full platoon per a turn from shooting, and take care of any tanks. I just need to get 2 more Destroyers, and 6 more warriors

Nice win, Tyranids seem nasty to me, but i have yet to actually play against them. As for the list, I think it could do good if used right, but you might be better off dropping some Warriors and getting some more Destroyers instead, because they are the best unit in the codex (in my opinion). Also, the Necron Lord's wargear assortment is illegal, you messed up the points values (Res Orb and Veil of Darkness takes up all the points he can have from the armory, unfortunately).

Tyranids are a pain to play against, as the amount of models they can pump out is rediculous. With the list, I thought a Veil of Darkness is only 30 points? Also yea some more destroyers would be nice but I also need to keep up my phase out limit

Yeah, Phase out sucks really bad. I hope the Necrons get a new codex to fix all their problems soon...
back on topic, a veil is worth 60, so with the res orb, it takes up all of your points.

Hmm, anyways that would be a good anti-guard list

1500 Point Necron

That would be a good anti guard list, unless they have too many tanks, then the list will suffer because of the poor Necron anti-tank. Heavy destroyers might help make the list more well rounded, with the ability to take out tanks and monstrous creatures out more directly.

So cut it to 34 warriors, and 8 immortals and then add in a few heavy destroyers for tanks. hmm this list looks solid

I think it should be BA/SW. Razorspam can be a mean list. Same with DoA.

Also, the OP needs some monoliths to hide the warriors behind.
