i recently purchased a space marine army to complement my dark eldar army. I was wondering if it is legal to create a daemonhunters army combining vanilla marines with daemonhunter marines.

Yep, it's not unnusual to have a small contingent of Daemonhunters as allies with Space Marines, just remember to fill you mandatory HQ and 2 Troop slots before taking anyother units, at least until the new Daemonhunter/Grey Knight codex comes out in March 2011.
1 HQ Space Marine
2 Troops Space Marines
1 HQ Daemonhuters
2 Troops Daemonhunters
