Ok I'm finally giving into Warhammer 40k and a friend of mine has offered to sell me his old Space Marines army that he bought and never actually used and before I buy it I'd like to know if it's good or even legal lol so here's the list:

10x Space Marine Squad 170
10x Space Marine Squad 170
10x Space Marine Squad 170
10x Space Marine Squad 170
10x Space Marine Scouts with Sniper Rifles 300
1x Razorback 40
1x Razorback 40
1x Space Marine Terminator Captain With Melta Bombs and Powersword 120
5x Space Marine Sternguard Veterans With Melta 168
5x Space Marine Command Squad 130

which = 1478

Also he's selling me all this for $270 and it looked like from what I've seen online this is a good price but if anyone thinks it's overpriced.

Welcome to Dakka!
It is legal, and I'd say $270 is an ok price, but it depends if they are broken or have very thick paint.

Thick paint shouldn't be to much of a problem imho it is removable with either breakfluid or nailpolish remover (without aceton). Ofcourse it is not the best situation but your figures remain quite ok.

270 is an ok price (also imho) really depends on the state of the figures. Because the pricing isn't really cheap nor is it as expensive as in the shop (but you had figured that out already)

Neither, him and some of his friends had all pitched in to buy these to get him into the game and before he even opened the packages he decided he didn't like space marines so he plays with a Tau army

So brand new and unboxed, or at least unassembled? Definately worth it then.

Everything but the space marines tactical squads are in original packaging he said he bought those at a local shop that had them for a discount because their boxes had been badly damaged or something.

Also I'd still like to know if it's a very good 1500pt army or at least a good starting base for an army.

Well you miss a little firepower to take on heavy armour but it is a good core for an army.

Hello, and welcome to Dakka! What playstyle do you like? Depending on that you might have to spend a bit more cash to be in the competitive scene. But for $270 thats a steal and a decent introductory army. Quick tip! First thing you wanna get is some Rhinos for those Tac Squads, unless you plan on spamming 5-6 marines in Razorbacks which isn't bad!

I would suggest getting a Space Marine codex and putting together a few lists, I think 1,000 points will be the most affordable right now for you, but don't be discouraged to try out 1,500! Post your lists in the "Army List" section, and the wonderful people here on Dakka will aid you.

The price is about right. I would definately try to barder though if the models look abused (black eyes, bloody lips ) and mistreated. It is a legal list, though it seems like he was playing space marines more like IG. I dont know if you want to have so many tactical marines on the battlefield -- especially without a way to transport them

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard
650 points of my do-it-yourself Tempest Guard
675 points of Commoraghs finest!

The Dude - "Jackie Treehorn treats objects like women, man."

Lord Helmet - "I bet she gives great helmet."
