Ok my fiance bought me a BFG starter box for christmas (I dont know how she managed to find one) so i tore of the wrapping like an excited kid and built the ships in it, 2 murder class, 2 styx heavy cruisers, 2 lunar and 2 dictators. Today I played my first game against my fiance, nice and simple 1 Murder vs 1 Lunar. We spent the entire game circling each other bouncing shots off void sheilds. 8 turns in, no damage inflicted. Does this get better when you add more ships, because as this is the suggested first thing to try from the book it doesnt advertise the game well....

Hi,
welcome to the game.
Problem 1:
In the Chaos list you need to have two regular cruisers to take one heavy cruisers. So 2 Styxes and 2 Murders is illegal in terms of fleet choice.
Yes, 1 on 1 ships will not be really doing a lot of damage (aside of a good Lock On, or torpedo run from the Lunar).
More ships do more damage.

I had this same problem when I tried BFG, lots of flash and no bang.....for a beginner its a real plop on the curb!
I played Marines vs Imp Navy, the Imp Navy sliced me a new arse, but I did manage to damage engines, set his bridge on fire, and take out his port side weapons.....all that "damage" and no sign of hull destruction, not to mention, in his next turn, he put out the fire, repaired his engines and his port side weapons.....what a load of crap.
We turned to Firestorm Armada, IMHO a much better more streamlined game, costs half the price to get going, is supported by a good gaming company, and you actually get to see some bang with your flash!

Yeah i know, luckily the styx is a pretty expensive choice and i dont mind runnning the fleets 3 ships vs 4
So this problem will go away once we start using more ships?
Seems odd if thats the case that the "Ideal" first game according tot he book is a 1v1 fight....

There's the "issue" right there.
Chaos likes to circle and use it's long range Batteries to pick the enemy apart (this works better with a Carnage than it does with a Murder). Imperials like to hide behind the Imperial Prow, close to spiting distance, launch Torpedoes, then next turn fire off a point blank broadside.
Playing this way really shows off the strengths of the different fleets and the tactics each fleet uses.
Try Cruiser Clash again, this time Carnage vs Lunar. And tell your fiance to "man up." lol! Or maybe this time you take the Lunar, and show her how it's done.

Get the frick in and board the Imperial vessel. Use t-hawks, use teleport attacks.
The 1 vs 1 is to get hang of the rules.
Try cruiser clash scenario next. 4 cruisers against each other.
Then 1000pts battle.
etc.

Yeah, one of the interesting things about BFG is that, at least when it comes to Chaos and IN, the game is specifically balanced so that a one vs. one fight between two cruisers will be inconclusive, with each side rarely being able to do much more than pull down the shields of the other. However, a 2 vs. 1 fight is almost always going to lead to damage on the lone ship.
As Horizon said, the 1 vs. 1 scenario is "ideal" only in the sense that it is an uncomplicated way to practice the moving and shooting rules. I recommend moving on to Cruiser Clash ASAP, ignoring such silly provisions as no carriers and the like .
