So, I picked up two boxes of Riders of Rohan from my FLGS in an attempt to build a decent Rohan army.
MY main concern is lack of experience and I don't want to waste a lot of money. So the goal is a cheap but effective 1500 point list that is modular so I can play any point value.
Thanks in advance guys

Get as many Rider boxes as you can. Track down some Two Towers starters if you can get them cheap.

Convert a few into Outriders, or the other elite/legendary units.
The metal outriders are silly expensive for little return.
A few greenstuff bedrolls and packs, and you are good to go.

All the characters are worth it. I really like the Eorl and Erkenbrand models.

Once you get enough regular Riders to hit your point level, you can always use a unit or 2 as the named units to eat up points.
Adding command to units burns points fast as well.

If I remember correctly, 1500pts is between 24-36 cavalry, with a few units of foot Warrirors of Rohan mixed in there. Characters to taste.

Thanks for the tip.
I wanted to avoid infantry if at all possible but I see now that my wallet will not allow that.
For infantry I wanted to throw in the Helmingas with all six companies, worth it?
I didn't know there were Starter Sets for WotR but I'll keep an eye out.

I'm talking about the Two Towers box game that came out when the movie dropped. I know they are still around, but might take some work to find.
You also may be able to find the "Battalion" boxes around.
These were Battleforce type boxes that priced around $75-125 when they came out and had a ton of plastics with a few elite metals and leaders.
I don't see them on GW's site anymore, but they were good value.

You don't need infantry at all. But they will be useful if you have a mission where there are buildings, as cavalry cannot enter them.

You can only take one unit of Grimbold's Helmingas, but sure, you can use the models for all the units.

Thanks Skrulnik, I'm glad someone has been able to lend some kind of direction.
Also, you said all the hero's were good.. Are their some better then others or is it all just play preference?

I think Erkenbrand, Theoden, and Eomer are the top tier/best value for points. Eowyn & Meriadoc are the bottom tier/overpriced for ineffective.

I've had a lot of fun using cav-only Rohan forces.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

^ What he said.

I know one guy who takes Eowyn just to have a second trigger for Eomer's revenge ability. I cant think what its actually called.

If you play against a lot of Uruk-Hai Pikes, Gandalf the white is a useful option, but he's pricey.

I've been looking at Emoer as a hero choice since before I got the book. I wanted to make his Battlehost but currently can't find a hard copy of the book I can flip though.

36 horses seems a little low for 1500 points if I'm running straight cav.

Captains, banners, and musicians help eat up points and all are useful to cavalry. Also don't forget to look at allies from the Forgotten Kingdoms. Both Radagst and Gandalf are good additions, and the Three Hunters is kind of fun sometimes, too.

How does one get Horn-Blowers on horse back? I assume it's conversion work but I'm just wondering what models.
For allies I was thinking a unit of elven archers, I want to get a Two Towers themed army going though I'm not completely committed to the idea.

I modified a couple, but usually I just pay the points and tell my opponent they are there, and show my army list if he asks.

I have a box of Wood Elves I sometimes add as allies. Not gotten around to painting the Galadhrim yet.

I was thinking about the Battlehosts book... is there anything worth taking from it?

Thanks for the tips guys. But with a current hours cut and some annoyance at my last tourney new models wont be coming anytime soon.

Also I have yet to find this 2 towers starter set you guys were talking about.
