Mainly in response to 6ixty9ine's post a few down from this topic The scenario is claim an objective, 500 points, minimum two troop choices, no HQ allowed, anything else goes. You won't win with kills, you have to take the objective, Ionheads are your best bet, that said you still won't win He can destroy the tanks, you have little chance of killing the wraithlords. 0.66 wounds a turn with the ion shots, gets horribly bad if he is in cover. Honoestly the avatar, 3 wraithlord, 16 guardian list is perhaps the most powerful 500pts list out there. Though I believe the tyranid 2 tyrant, 2 fex, 6 ripper list can beat it. Not many are in the same field, tau are not far as I can tell. 3 Ions are your best bet though.

But that's only if he drops a starcannon to take a bright lance (not very strong odds given the standard 500 pt environment).
Even then, the chance of a brightlance actually destroying a hammerhead moving fast is low (2/3*1/2*1/3 = 1/9), and that's assuming no decoy launchers.

play range on those wraithlords with some railgun hammerheads. Also, in my experiance an avatar is hardly a threat to the tau. no ranged weapons and only a 5+ invunerable makes for easy killing with fire warriors. The fire warriors can also take the avengers at a range. The eldar are crap without their vehicles. So like this:
2x Hammerhead with railgun,multitracker,2 burst cannons
2xFire warrior team with 9 each

You could take 3 Ionheads with Ion/burst and 12 FWs, still leaves you with 35pts to spare on upgrades. Multitrackers on all and decoy launchers on 1, run this hammer slightly ahead of the other 3 so the enemy has to take a ld check or shoot at it.
It thus shields (very slightly) the other 2 without the decoys.
This will beat the 3 Wraithlord list. Tyranid 2 tyrant, 2 fex, 6 ripper list can beat the eldar one aswell.

Well, if you're looking to tool up specifically against this list, you could try large numbers of Broadsides. He's moving 6" a turn, max, so he can't really do anything too dramatic with respect to maneuvering. An Ion Cannon will take .667 wounds off a Wraithlord per turn, and the Twin Linked Railgun will do .625 wounds (both weapons are equally affected by cover), but a single BASS costs 80pts, as opposed to about 130-140 for the Ionhead. Just deploy a whole bunch of BASS right across from those WLs (preferably within LOS of the objective), and blast away. Concentrate your fire, and take them out one at a time. Last turn, you swoop in on the objective with a Piranha. You should be able to outrange him, so shield drones might not even be necessary. Also, if you're going with Gue'vesa, just take a min-sized unit with a markerlight-toting leader. It'll likely do you better than the single pulse rifle. Here's what I'm thinking:
Fire Warriors x6 (60) ----------------Sit back and plug the Avengers Gue'Vesa w/ Gue'Vesa'Ui w/ Markerlight (56) -------------------Either mark for the FWs or Broadsides Barebones Piranha (60) ---------------------------Just hide it, and make a late run on the objective with it BASS x2 (160) ---------------Like I said, just camp the objectiveoff, even better BASS x2 (160) ---------------If you can adjust your firing lane and take a few potshots, even better
