Evenin', chaps!
I'm looking into Flames of War. After getting into wargaming last year with good ol' 40K, it didn't take me long to gravitate towards Flames of War. I'm fairly interested in my history, but military history especially really grabs me. So, I have a fair few questions. Here goes. I appreciate any help you can give me!
1 I gather that Mid-War is the 'balanced middle child' ruleset? In such a case, would it be the best for a beginner to attempt?
2 I've also been told that 1,500 Points is that standard. How much would a 1,500 Mid-War German Army cost me? (Not Afrika Korps, just the normal Gerries!)
3 How tricky is it to pick up the rules?
4 Exactly what books would I need to purchase before me and some pals can get going with our Mid-War armies (, mine being German)? A list would be appreciated here.
5 How much will a 1,500 Point Mid-War German Army cost me, roughly speaking?
Thanks,
Martin

If you've managed to get 40K, FoW will be very easy to grasp.
As for how much an army will cost you, it's fairly hard to answer, it all depends on what kind of army you want to field. Elite tanks will be cheaper to field, money-wise, than say, a russian infantry horde.
As far as books go, you'll need the base rulebook, and either North Africa, or Eastern Front. Get both, and you have everything for mid-war.

an armored company will be far cheaper to assemble then an Infantry Company. Infantry companies often have upwards of a hundred stands.
i built a 2k U.S. armor company for only $150, but you will then want support elements and extra goodies.
whats nice is that Battlefront miniatures sells complete Battalion boxs which contain the minimum HQ and Combat Platoons needed for the specified Company. these run anywhere from $50 to $75, but these are almost exclusivly Infantry/Armored Infantry Companies.
Most models can also be used in other companies too. Tank companies can take small amounts of Infantry, but can be all tanks if desired. the opposite is true too.

The periods are all pretty well balanced between each other, so as long as you're all playing the same era it should be fine.
2 I've also been told that 1,500 Points is that standard. How much would a 1,500 Mid-War German Army cost me? (Not Afrika Korps, just the normal Gerries!)
It depends on if you want to go infantry or armor, and if you'd rather do more elite or just regular chaps. The more elite forces like Fallschirmjaegers, SS, or heavy tank companies (Tigers and Panthers) are going to be cheaper ($80-$150) than your pure infantry companies. That being said, you can generally use infantry with few or no modifications in Mid- and Late-War, so it might be cheaper to do a Mid/Late-War Grenadierkompanie than say a separate Panzerkompanie for Mid and Late.
3 How tricky is it to pick up the rules?
If you've played 40k, Flames of War should be easy to pick up. There are some fiddly rules like U.S. Tank Destroyers, Recon in general, and Shooting Too Successful but I had no problem getting the basics down when I started.
4 Exactly what books would I need to purchase before me and some pals can get going with our Mid-War armies (, mine being German)? A list would be appreciated here.
It depends on which front you'd like to play. They have the North Africa book for the war in the desert and Italy, and Eastern Front for the war in Russia.

the book to pick up really depends on the force you want.
different books are connected with different operations.
Hell's Highway contains rules for Irish Guards and the 2nd Household cavelry for the Brits. Parachute Rifles for the U.S. and for the Germans it has Kampfgruppe Walther's Fallshirmjagers.
so depending on what type of force you want you will pick up a different book.
and BTW: Mid and Late war forces are pretty much interchangable with the exception of King Tigers, 76mm Shermans, and a few other more esoteric bits of equipment. a Sherman is a Sherman(they do make different body styles for Mid and Late tanks of the same kind, but it's a purely asthetic deal)

Thanks for all the responses.
Could somebody point me in the direction of a decent German Mid-War Eastern Front Tank Company List?

there is the Panzerdivisions Ost army list for free download at Flamesofwar.com which allows for Panthers or Panzer IVs as Combat platoons with mixed support.
this is a Late War list(most people play Mid and Late War interchangebly)
i'll try to find a link.
here's the link to all their Free, and 100% official, downloads. http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=108
Panzerdivisions Ost is under the 1944-45 section.

For that you would need to purchase Eastern Front. It's the all-inclusive Mid-War book for the Eastern Front.
Unless you were looking for an actual list, pointed out with units and such.
