Trying to get into BFG now that my local games workshop is holding 1500pt games.

Starting reading up on rules, and watched a 1000pt game.

In 40k I use Imperial Fists Task force Gauntlet led by Captain Lysander. I was thinking about starting an Imperial Fists fleet because I love marines

Anyone have any tips on starting up, or what kind of list I can make at 1500pts?

Well as a beginner my self only 2 games in! i would like to say welcome! And its a blast I also play 40k and Its just as fun! I play imperial navy because I play ig in 40k so then I can do campaigns where they are mixed.

When I played I noticed the dominater and the dictator are fantastic and not impressed with cobras their missiles weren't enough. I want to try something with lances they are great! That's what I know so far about imperial navy.

Space marines I really only know that they require strong battle barges... I believe

Hope this helps!

I'd go cruiser heavy they won't let you down I believe I heard somewhere that space marine escorts were trash.

I have decided to go with

Battle Barge- 425pts
Master of the fleet- 50pts
4x Strike Cruisers- 580pts
3x Strike Cruisers- 435pts

1490pts total.

One barge and 7 cruisers will pump out 17 thunderhawk squadrons, plus lots of bombardment cannons as well. If I wanted to be super competitve I could go 10 SC, but I really wanna use both capital ships for fun reasons.

Been saying it alot. There is nothing too much wrong with the escorts per se, they are overpriced, paying extra for boarding stats they wont use, and thr specialist escorts add options they don't need, such as a 5+ armour Cobra equivalent. But the biggest bugbear by far is that your capital ships are 6+ armour, its one of the Space Marine fleets biggest advantages. Taking escorts means taking stuff with 5+ armour, thus giving the weapons batteries and torpedoes the enemy has something valid to shoot at. This negates one of your biggest advantages, so just don't do it.

Escorts add nothing to your fleet, sure its the only way to get lances, but that is no excuse. Strike cruisers are as mobile as escorts anyway, and are fairly inexpensive, they can provide all the bulk your fleet needs.

Now while this tactic was first initiated by me here, and I have been singing this tune for nearly a decade, with no intent to change. Yet I do have some Space Marine escorts, for friendly games, for colour and because they are not bad models. But if competitiveness means anything to you that is all they will remain.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Well, SM escorts aren't all bad...I would say the Gladius still has some value. Of course, if you were going for the most competitive Marine fleet you could, you would be running two barges at 1,500 pts .

Jeez, per current Armada rules the real powergamers go by BattleBarges + Escorts.

They do not take the puny pathethic Strike Cruiser.
1 shield, 6+ armour is nothing vs a common enemy ship with 2 lances.

Escorts:
Hunter is awesome
Gladii is good.
Firestorm RSV is good.

Per draft2010 Strike Cruisers become more worthwhile as they can take a shield per upgrade.
