Game: Seize Ground & Pitched Battle

Deployment

Angels won the roll off. One objective was placed by the Angels deployment zone, one on the right flank, one in the shrine ruin one in the centre ruin and another Guard deployment zone.

Angels deployed first putting the melta Assault Squads in front then the flamer ones behind each with a Librarian and Priest attached. Honour Guard shifted away from the main fighting force opting to move down the left flank. Devastators deployed with two units by the Angel objective in a single ruin and the other one in a ruin opposite the centre objective.

Guard deployed putting two plasma Veteran squads near the objective their side along with the two Vendettas a melta squad deployed along them with the CCS with the 4 plasma hiding out of sight. More over to the centre the remaining armour deployed with a line of Manticores at the rear and giving cover to them was a melta unit, the other CCS and the Hellhound.

Turn 1

Scouts infiltrate onto the centre objective on the top floor right ontop of the objective. Vendettas scout to get cover saves.

Angels move out jumping across the table and then running to get into cover, a melta squad moves into the ground floor of the centre ruin objective with a flamer squad behind while a melta squad moves into the shrine ruin with a flamer squad behind while the Honour Guard peel down the left flank but use the terrain to get cover and opt not to run.

Devastators let rip with multiple missile launchers only damage is immobilised and crew shaken on the plasma Chimera holding the Guard objective and weapon destroy and shaken on the plasma tank next to it.

Guards turn everything remains static as the Guardsmen don't want to move into the Angels melta range and instead will use raw fire power to slaughter some at range. Only thing to move is the 3 plasma gun CCS ready to nail the Honour Guard.

Shooting Vendettas both fire at a single Dev squad by the Angel objective but only manage to kill the Sgt, always the Sgt eh!? lol. Manticores start direct firing at the flamer unit coming down the centre, killing off the Librarian means no shield and the Priest means no feel no pain. After multiple Manticore hits half the unit is destroyed, though they pass morale the melta unit also takes damage from Manticore shots but only loses two Marines. CCS unleashes plasma at the Honour Guard and even with cover plasma meltas through all power armour in the squad killing all Marines.

Turn 2

Melta squad in the centre ruin walks through terrain ready to blast the CCS while the now 5 man flamer unit follows behind, minus a Priest thanks to Manticore fire. The melta unit flies out of the shrine ruin lose the Sgt and another Marine thanks to dangerous terrain but runs and claims the right flank objective, the flamer unit which was behind them walks into the shrine ruin and claims the objective there.

Shooting Devs open fire wrecking the plasma Veteran Chimera on the Guard side objective, the squad passes pinning test. The supporting Chimera is also wrecked and the squad fails a pinning test. The CCS which wiped out the Honour Guard gets blown out their tank when it explodes, the flamer squad follows up the attack leaving the Commander as the survivor with one wound; he passes morale. One Manticore is also crew shaken thanks to Devastator fire.

In the Guards turn the solo Commander runs away from the fight and hides in terrain blocking LOS. The Hellhound moves up along with a Chimera with melta Veterans ready to unleash mass melta and lasgun fire at the 5 man flamer unit with the Librarian while the Hound tackles the melta squad. A melta squad moves up in their Chimera towards the right flank objective ready to fire at the Marines inside the ruin.

Shooting the melta Veterans fire out the Chimera at the Assault Squad in terrain on the right flank objective but all pass armour/cover saves, the Vendetta support the fire and only a single Marines gets blasted out his boots by lascannons. The Hellhound unleashes double flamers and reduces the melta squad which popped the CCS Chimera down to 5, they pass morale. The melta squad blasts the 5 man flamer unit, though the Librarian casts shield power giving cover saves ok, a single Marine still dies. Manticores forget to fire, doh!

Turn 3

Melta squad on the objective prepares to unleash double melta at the Chimera in front of them while the other melta squad and 5 man flamer unit get ready to blow up the Chimera holding the melta Veterans which just shot at them, flamer them and then multi assault the Hellhound at the sametime.

Shooting melta Assault Squad fires at the melta Veteran Chimera and immobilises it, so no flamer follow up :( . On the right flank meltas blast the Chimera and immobilise it. Devs manage to stop a Vendetta from firing and score weapon destroyed, immobilise another melta Veteran Chimera and crew shake it and crew shake the remaining CCS Chimera.

In assault the 5 man flamer unit with the Librarian charge the Chimera with the supporting melta squad managing to multi assault the Hellhound too; Hellhound is immobilised while the Chimera is exploded by krak grenades wounding the Librarian in the blast and killing several Marines too, the Guardsmen don't do too bad. The other melta Assault Squad moves out of terrain and charges the immobilised Chimera hitting it with krak grenades, it's wrecked and the Guardsmen pass the pinning test.

Guards turn the last CCS unit moves 12" towards the melta unit which got blown out their tank on the right flank, the CCS bails out ready to hose down the flamer Assault Squad with mass plasmas. Melta squad which got blown out their Chimera by the 5 man flamer unit moves around the tank towards the centre objective ready to take the long trek up the ruin floors while the last melta unit bails out their immobilised Chimera ready to blast the flamer squad.

Shooting CCS issues first rank fire to the melta unit ont he right flank which fails, issues fire on my target to itself making the Angels in terrain re-roll cover saves. The solo Commander issues move! move! move! to the melta unit which runs into the base of the centre ruin and then issues first rank fire second rank fire to the other melta squad but fails the order, the melta squad then blasts the flamer squad with the Librarian using the shield power, but the squad is utimately destroyed. The Hound burns the Marines which immobilised it in combat and luckily kills all three. The CCS blasts plasma halving the flamer squad which fail morale and runs off, one Marine gets snagged on terrain and dies thanks to dangerous terrain. The other melta squad has no luck and only kills a single Marine thanks to cover saves from their own wreck. The Manticores bomb the Scouts, two die but the squad passes morale - going to ground saved most of them thanks to camo cloaks giving a 2+ cover save, hehe.

Turn 4

Flamer squad falling back regroups and moves 15" towards the CCS (auto move 3" to regroup and move 12" to jump packs, awesome!). Melta squad which got shot by melta Veterans on the right flank move to shoot and assault.

Shooting Devs fire frags at the melta Veteran squad which killed the Librarian and flamer Assault Marines,in revenge all are shredded by frags leaving just chunks left. Both other Devs fire frags at the squad in the centre ruin base, they all die leaving the objective safe. The flamer Assault Squad blasts the CCS leaving a single wound Commander left while the melta unit blasts the Guardsmen, they pass morale.

In assault Librarian and flamer Marines charge the Commander, Librarian uses unleash rage and batters the Commander. The melta Assault Marines charge the Guardsmen and combat rages on.

In the Guards turn little movement happens or none at all.

Shooting Vendettas blast a Dev squad killing the Sgt and a missile launcher armed Marine. Manticores bomb the Scouts again leaving two left after the Scouts go to ground, the Scouts pass morale.

In assault the Marines slaughter the Guardsmen, they consolidate back onto the right flank objective.

Turn 5

Flamer Assault Squad moves through terrain getting poor rolls and is just out of claiming the objective. The battered Dev squad moves down a floor to contest the objective by the Angel deployment zone.

Shooting the other two Devs fire at the Vendettas in attempts to stop them turbo boosting and contesting objectives, fail to do any damage.

Guards turn the Vendettas turbo boost with one landing by the right flank objective and contesting while the other lands by the shrine but thanks to it's own big ass wings and tail the Vendettas base isn't within 3" leaving that objective unclaimed.

Manticores start firing at the Scouts again but the Scouts remain!

Turn 6

Game continues. Melta squad holding the right flank objective uses meltas on the arse of the Vendetta and makes it go bomb, explosion is only 1" so Marines are all safe. Flamer squad moves through terrain and claims the shrine objective.

Vendetta by the shrine fires at the Scouts, the Scouts go to ground and survive.

Game over Angels win claiming three objectives and contesting one, Guard hold one.

Summary

Cracking game and at the end I thought Angels didn't have a fat lot left but looking at the Guard they've got 22 models and some armour.

The Angels did well but I can how quickly they die without armour protection, which makes a massive difference. The Honour Guard died to mass plasma which I was hoping some would survive thanks to cover but they didn't and thanks to mass Manticore fire I lost two Priests on the first turn which massively affects the Angels survival. Once the Angels got into close range the fun started happening with tanks being blown up, Guardsmen being flame'd and beaten up in combat.

The Devastators did well tackling enemy armour, I think they only wrecked two tanks but did do crew shaken quite often which at least stops the tank and the squad inside shooting which worked well enough for me.

Scouts did ok just holding the objective. I actually switched them to sniper rifles at the last minute which was interesting, they only fired twice once they did nothing and second time scored two wounds but those wounds were saved by cover saves. After that they just kept going to ground and got hit by probably about 7-8 Manticore blasts as those Manticores were firing direct and kept landing on target more or less, but the 2+ cover save was just awesome - win! Not sure on sniper rifles but the 36" range does give them some help, I'll ponder on those, after all they're meant for objective holding not shooting.

I think some bad luck on dice rolls meant the Priests died, but the Priests will always be target priority anyway. I think the Angels did well and a jump list is something interesting.

Have you thought about using Bikes with Attack Bikes attached (160 points for 3 bikes, 2 Meltaguns and a MM AB) instead of Devastators? With their movement they could benefit from FNP... I like that you used all infantry and included alot of Dev squads.

Fun read - that IG army looks brutal!

Not thought of using Bikers TBH instead of Devs and very good point about FnP and F.C. Though, a Bike squad I think would be about 150 points and I won't have the range fire power and I don't think same amount - two meltas and a multi melta. The Dev squads were pretty cool TBH.

The I.G army is a pain in the arse.

I think youre right - the range of the ML's is more important. I appreciate all the batreps and playtesting youre doing with the BA's. Im putting together an army and taking this all in.

Yeah the range is definately needed just to put pressure on enemy units, if not all meltas advance and don't do anything for a few turns maybe. At least with missile launchers can stop something from shooting, moving or blow it or and take out a squad or damage it.

Happy to help btw going jump is seriously different to mech, especially when all my other armies except Tyranids are mech!

How did you lose the Priests in turn one? Why didn't you take out one of the BP/CCW Marines instead? I am a bit lost there, sorry.

Otherwise, great read! Awesome report. From what it sounds like it seems he really took out a lot of marines, I was surprised by the victory.

Presumably the multiple Manticore hits mean he was forced to assign at least one wound to the Priest.

One squad took about 12 wounds from a Manticore so Priest died in that squad, Honour Guard got plasma'd and failed cover the other Priest failed dangerous terrain test as fell back after the unit lost 25%.

You are correct sir.
