Subject: First Idea for BFG List, 500 pts Imperial Navy

So, a group of gamers in my Uni's Wargaming club have decided to try and start up BFG. Since we're just starting, I'm looking at a small Imperial Navy fleet first. Here is my initintial list.
Cruisers
Lord Inglip, Dominator Class Cruiser
Pride of Lothos, Dominator Class Cruiser
Escorts
DesRon 1, 3x Sword Class Frigates
Is this a good enough nucleus for a future fleet?

I think this would work fine, although taking two Nova Cannons in a 500 point fleet might be irritating to some. Also, if you are planning on just getting one box set of cruisers, you won't have enough weapons battery bits to make two Dominators. What could work well is if you took a Dominator, a Gothic, and then the 3 Swords. This would drop your nova cannons to one, but it would also give you some torps to play around with. It also has the advantage of being build-able straight from the box, without extra parts being required!

Alright then! Sounds good...I could always save up the weapons batteries bits to make some more Dominators. I'm guessing 2 nova cannons in 500 pts is considered a bit cheesy?
Oh...and are the cruiser kits plastic? I thought all BFG models were metal...

A great way to score a lot of weapons batteries from sprues is the Emperor Battleship.

Second this opinion.
You can also buy a cheap battleship model and salvage its AA mounts.

Alright then, sounds good. I'm ordering the models next week, so it's good to not get a nasty surprise once I open the kit and find I don't have enough weapons batteries to make what I want.
Out of curiosity....the weapons batteries/lance turrets on battleships and other larger models, are they seperate pieces then? From what I'm hearing I'm assuming they are....

Yes, at least for the Chaos and Imperial ships. Both of those fleets have plastic cruisers and metal battleships. The battleships feature "hardpoints" that accept the plastic weapons bits from the cruiser frames. This allows you some freedom with how you position the weapons on the ships, and it is what allows one kit to make several different classes of ship (thanks to BFG's rather generous interpretation of WYSIWYG ).

Awesome then, I was wondering how I could build the huge list of cruisers, battlecruisers, etc that BFG gives me...
This is starting to sound like it'd be real fun in both the modelling and rules department..

It is. Some of the most fun ive ever had modeling was with my buddies with BFG ships. Sadly, nobody plays around here anymore.

Nova Cannons are pretty weak.
Psychological warfare.
Torps do more damage.
But nonetheless 2 Dominators is pretty daft within 500pts.
Kar Duniash specific vessel and only 1 was present in the Gothic War.

Well, I'm not trying to represent Battlefleet Gothic persay. I'm using the model and rules to represent my own sector Battlefleet. But yeah, I see what you mean about the nova cannons vs. torpedoes. When I chose two Dominators I was trying to make a traditional line o' battle for me to use, an the Dominator seemed like the best cruise sized ship of the line.
