Deployment

Shaun (opponent) won the roll off and placed his objective in the top right corner of the board were he deployed. I placed mine on a building in my bottom left table quarter, you can just see the little flag on the first floor of a building in the picture below.

Shaun deploys his soliders putting a Manticore and plasma Vet squad by his objective and the other Manticore close by in the ruin which is screening his objective. He then places his Vendettas forward and everything else behind them using the large shrine ruin mostly for cover.

Angels deploy putting Vindicators and mostly melta units in front of the other units, one Librarian is with the flamer Honour Guard and the other with a flamer Assault Squad.

* Tactical Notes

Pretty much everything is a threat in Shauns army one way or another, though my first targets will be the Vendettas as these can open up my tanks pretty easily. The Manticores will be annoying but there's nothing I can do about that. I'll be going for the LMBTs after that as they can blow my tanks to pieces and squash my Marines without any armour or feel no pain saves. Melta squads I am on the look out for but the way I see it is if Shaun gets close I can use that to my advantage.

Turn 1

I attempt to seize the initiative to get first run of shooting in but fail. Shaun moves his Vendettas one landing in terrain and getting immobilised, rest his armour moves out full 12".

Shooting most tanks pop smoke, the ones in the open anyway. Librarians both cast shield powers before Shaun starts shooting. Manticores fire getting 3 shots from one can't remember the other and after shield saves manage to blow up a Razorback carrying a flamer squad, a single Marine dies in the blast but the squad passes morale test ok.

My turn I move my armour forward but not too close to be in melta range of Shaun. I do managed to immobilise a Razorback carrying a flamer Assault Squad in the terrain from the exploded Razorback, nice.

Shooting I blast the operational Vendetta and make it go boom. I fire pretty much every lascannon at the CCS with meltas but nothing hits or Shaun passes his cover saves from smoke.

* Tactical Notes

Ok it's even stevens atm with both of us blowing up a unit each, I'm a bit gutted half my lascannons missed shooting at the CCS Chimera holding meltas and the two which did hit Shaun saved.

My plan is to move up the flamer squad blown out their tank towards the immobilised Vendetta and use kraks on it when I can. The other immobilised squad I'll bail out their tank and they can move onto my own objective, while this is going on I will advance the armour towards Shauns.

Turn 2

Shauns turn he moves his armour about drawing closer to mine to get himself into melta range to bust open those Razorbacks.

Shooting my Librarians both cast shield powers before Shaun shoots, though while shield saves my Vindicators from Manticore fire the Honour Guard with dual flamers gets blown out their tank, they pass morale and I don't think any one dies. Another Razorback carrying the other Honour Guard gets wrecked, they pass pinning test ok.

My turn I move the melta Honour Guard towards CCS with plasmas in the middle of the board while a flamer Assault Squad with the other Librarian follows to support as the flamer squad blown out their tank first turn runs towards the immobilised Vendetta but not close enough.

Shooting Vindicators fire and manage to immobilise a LMBT, as it's in a squadron it is wrecked. Honour Guard both miss firing at the CCS Chimera, while a Assault Squad with a melta has better luck and manages to pop the CCS melta Chimera killing two Guardsmen in the blast - they pass morale and pinning tests.

In assault Honour Guard charge the Chimera and score crew shaken on it while the Assault Squad charges and mauls the CCS killing them all, they consolidate but stay in the crater (marked by dice) to get cover.

* Tactical Notes

Still pretty much drawing damage wise as I've lost another two Razorbacks though Shaun has lost a Leman Russ, a Chimera and a CCS and the other CCS isn't really going anywhere, though I suspect the melta Honour Guard might be on borrowed time..

Plan is to move the flamer squad to unleash krak grenades on that Vendetta to stop is sniping at my tanks, use the Vindicators to blow up the last Leman Russ and use the melta Honour Guard and flamer Assault Marines to blow up tanks and maul infantry. On the board side towards me I'll start clearing off a nearby melta Vet squad supporting the now dead CCS then mount back up and move towards the objective.

Turn 3

Shaun moves his armour about with a melta and plasma Vet squad moving to block the objective a little bit while a Vet squad with meltas get out the Chimera and moves to blast the Honour Guard bashing on the last CCS's Chimera.

Shooting Leman Russ fires at Razorback following behind the melta Honour Guard but luckily it scatters and misses. Vets on foot receive order to first rank fire second rank fire and fire at the Honour Guard, two remain and pass morale ok. Manticores rain down on the Vindicators but shield makes the save. Assault Squad which battered the CCS in combat gets shot by melta Veterans and Manticore leaving just three left, they pass morale ok.

No assaults...

Three man Assault Squad gets back into the Razorback while the flamer squad with the Librarian bails out and moves towards the Veterans on foot. Flamer squad moves towards the Vendetta.

Shooting a lascannon shot wrecks the last Vendetta, melta Honour Guard pops the CCS Chimera killing a Honour Guard in the blast, two Veterans from the CCS and two Vets from the melta squad, flamer then blasts the Veterans leaving half left. Razorbacks fire at the Chimera by the melta Veterans and manages to immobilise it, weapon destroy it and stun it. Vindicators manage to crew stun and immobilise the last Leman Russ.

In assault Librarian and flamer Assault Marines charge the Veterans, Librarian casts unleash rage ok and all the Veterans are dead. CCS gets charged by the solo Honour Guard, combat remains on.

* Tactical Notes

The situation has seemed to level out in my favour as Shaun's force has taken a real beating this turn. He has lost a Vendetta, Chimera, CCS is locked in combat, Veteran squad dead, LMBT doing doing and a Chimera doing nothing. If I can mop up that central area next turn and then start moving towards Shauns objectives with two squads I should be golden.

Turn 4

Shauns turn he sends two Chimeras through the shrine ruin, well one ends up on the other side the is still in the terrain base. He moves a plasma Vet squad he had held back on his board edge around terrain towards his objective.

Shooting my Librarians both cast shield; Manticores fire blowing up a Vindicator and crew shaking the other I think that's about it.

My turn I move the flamer squad with the Librarian towards combat to bail out the solo Honour Guard as combat still rages on from last turn. I move the flamer squad through terrain near the last wrecked Vendetta and towards the immobilised Russ. I move two Razorbacks both with meltas 6" near the shrine ready to blast Shauns Chimeras going for my objective as I pull back the surviving Vindicator to block my objective from Shaun if he makes it over by it next turn.

The Vindicator pops smoke while the Razorbacks blast out plasma and lascannons wrecking both Chimeras! Squads inside pass pinning tests, though one squad isn't lucky and gets flamed by the Honour Guard.

In assault Librarian with the flamer squad casts unleash rage and butchers the last CCS before they even strike back. Honour Guard and Librarian charge into the now 5 man Veteran squad, Librarian casts unleash rage and after it is all said and done all are dead.

* Tactical Notes

Well it has gone super well with those two Chimeras speeding towards my objective both getting las/plas treatment and getting totalled, one squad then got flamed and butchered by the Librarian and Honour Guard. Shaun now has nothing left which can reach my objective before the end of the game so his best chance is to draw by stopping me getting to his..can he do it
?

Turn 5

Shaun pulls the Veteran plasma squad away from their bust Chimera in the shrine ruin while he moves his armour about to form a armoured wall around his objective.

Shooting the Leman Russ fires the battlecannon at the Librarian and flamer squad which killed the CCS but it scatters and misses. Plasma Vets manage to wreck the Razorback with the three Assault Marines in, they pass pinning test.

In my turn with my objective secure I move the Vindicator 12" to have another target going towards Shauns objective but it gets grounded in terrain :( the solo Honour Guard gets back into a Razorbacks and moves 18" towards Shauns objective with another Razorback following. Flamer squad moves through terrain to use kraks on the Leman Russ while the flamer squad with the Librarian goes for the empty immobilised Chimera. Three man melta Assault Squad moves through terrain and is ready to blast a Manticore as the Honour Guard come through the shrine ruin and the other Razorback moves up.

Shooting the melta fires at the Manticore, hits but I can't remember the damaged result but the Manticore is still there. Lascannons and plasmas fire at the Veterans on foot leaving three left, they pass morale ok.

In assault flamer squad uses kraks on the LMBT and wrecks it, other squad uses kraks on the Chimera and wrecks it. Melta squad charges the Manticore and shakes it.

We roll for turn 6 but it doesn't happen, game ends with a draw.

Summary

That game was really fun with both us taking punches as good as we got until turn 3 when the Angels managed to deliver a hard blow, turn 4 it was down hill with the Guard taking plenty of damage and the two Guard squads going for my objective neutralised, which I admit is the best those Razorbacks have done all night.

A few mistakes by myself as I forgot I can assault vehicles in Shauns turn which means the Honour Guard could have used krak grenades and auto hit on Shauns Chimera then next turn shoot the squad, ah well they died in the end. There was also some pissing out with the I.C Priest though that doesn't matter.

Shaun is getting better considering he has been playing since October. I gave him two tips this game and that was send his Chimeras to my objectives to claim them, I feel a bit gulity I popped them both but I guess it was luck of the dice. The other tip was the armoured wall around his objective which stopped me from getting close and would have been a problem if there was a next turn. I think Shauns mistakes was moving that Vendetta into terrain, no point in that really and cost him the mobileness of the Vendetta. Also taking vehicles in squadrons means they're easier to deal with, I did tell you Shaun!

Good battle report. Apart from your other advice, perhaps suggest in matchups like this Shaun reserve the two chimeras that are going to head for the enemy objective.

That way they can come on down the long table edge, which is both closer to the objective and avoids the huge traffic jam in the middle when two mechanised armies meet.

Why would he reserve his Chimeras and come on his board edge when my objective is my side for? He's no closer to my objective at all. He's only going to come on else where on his side of the board and still come down into the thick of things either way. Also coming on via reserve means he could get those Chimeras come on turn 2 which means they would get shot up before reaching the objective or turn 5 when they won't reach it at all or come on reserve seperately leaving one to come towards me unsupported. Bad idea.

Best thing Shaun could have done is used Vendettas to contest objectives but I destroyed all those. The Chimeras I suggested to go for my objectives I got lucky on and blown them both up. The game was all going on in the middle and everything ground to a halt there with two tanks making a break for it, which unfortunately both got caught.

I think he's referring to the ability, in spearhead, to use the long edge as your reserve edge and gain movement room.

Depending on rolls, it could have made you split more and/or gotten a unit in the backfield. Not sure I would have done it, but it is an idea.

He means the players side of the table which is the long edge, which will come on there and will have to move 48" across the board to my objective either way.

Either way I had three units back field to if anything come across that way, maybe more and plenty of stuff which could get into range as my stuff was controlling the centre.

He needs some more valks with vets. Scout and melta down key targets turn 1. Should be a close match either way. Nice Bat Rep...some photos from the opposite side would have been nice so you can see all angles better.
