Anyone know if it's possible to upgrade my old PS3 to a newer model, and copy all of my info and saved games and DLCs onto the new one? If so, how? I did some googling but couldn't find anything useful. Mostly looking for a bigger hard drive and plus my old one crashes pretty regularly, so I'm wondering if it would be worth getting a newer model... maybe the Killzone 3 bundle since that game's next on my list anyway...

Try just moving the files onto an external harddrive before moving them onto the new ps3.

DLC's should be saved to the account so you can just download them again.

Yep, DLC's are under your PSN ID so you can always re-download them. As far as transfering files go, I've done it with a flash drive. Most of the files transferred with no problem, only two files were messed up due to the fact that they were on multiple profiles.

Well I only have the 1 profile. I was also thinking it would just be easier/faster to copy my DLCs instead of re-downloading them. Is it possible to just do the copying over my network (wireless or wired)? I don't have a flash drive or even a regular external hard drive

I have no idea how you would go about sending files on a ps3 without using accounts, usb flashdrives are like a fiver though and are well worth the purchase anyway.

You can copy the DLC's but I don't know how SONY would handle stuff like that, they get suspicious and the like about 'file sharing'. Worse comes to worse you could always just call them to find out the best way to deal with transferring files.

I think I do have an old thumb drive laying around, but it's pretty old and only like 256 mb or something like that. I remember it cost me like $50 way back when. Guess I could get a new cheapy one at staples. Do I want to set up my PSN account on the new system first or will it just backup everything to the drive and copy it all automagically to the new one?

Are the newer (slim) models any different inside? like more ram or faster graphics, or is it just all the same guts in a different case?

Slim are pretty much the same but suffer from overheating issues.

Oh and... once the new one is working, can I reformat / wipe the old one? I was thinking I'd ebay the old one, still have the original box and all.

Yes, the option should be in your setting controls on the main menu of the system.

There should be a data transfer utility described in the manual. My brother had to do it a few months ago. The steps have to be followed exactly. I remember you had to connect them with an Ethernet cable and then set one up to send data and the then set the other up to receive data. One had to be plugged into the HDMI port and the other was plugged into the AV port so you could switch back and forth with your TV remote.

BTW which one is the old one that you have? Some of them can fetch a decent price on ebay because they have more usb ports and backwards compatibility with the PS2.

OK I'll look into it. If I can do it with the ethernet port that will be a lot easier. I have the 80 GB old style one, and the hard drive has about 15 gigs free, next few games I get are gonna be filling it up pretty fast. So I was thinking of switching to the 300 gb model.. or 320 or whatever it was. That'll be more space than I'm sure I'll ever need. Even the 160 would be fine I think. I remember thinking 80 seemed kinda small when I bought it, but it was the biggest at the time. Plus the fact that it freezes up a lot. Whenever I play something I gotta save often since I never know if it's just gonna lock up on me. Black Ops was the worst for that, other games weren't so bad, but still.

So you are getting rid of the old 80GB PS3 for a slim one with a bigger hard drive? They do make 3rd party (and possible official) upgrade hard drives for the PS3. There should be a way to take everything from the 80GB hard drive and put it on a 500 GB hard drive without buying a new PS3. The older PS3s are a lot better in my opinion, but I still like playing PS2 games.

Both use standard 2.5-inch SATA notebook drives that require only two screws to get to, so you’re still more than welcome to rip it out and put something larger in, if you’re so inclined. Also if you are geeky in nature, you can install linux on the old fat one.

Of course the slim is quieter, doesn't get as hot, and doesn't have a shiny surface that shows your fingerprints. Regardless if you sell the PS3fat, you should get a little more money out of it that selling a newer PS3.

I figured I could probably just replace the hard drive the same way I would in a PC, but I was just worried about the data and how I'd get the old stuff onto the new one. I was thinking, I could blow $300 on a new huge hard drive, but if I'm gonna do that I may as well just get a whole new PS3 for the same price and then ebay the old one. But I guess if I do that I'd want to reformat the old one somehow and wipe all my info off of it.

You can go into the data storage utility and get rid of unnecessary data. If you bought another hard drive you would probably need another PS3 to help with the data transfer. However if you have patience, you can copy gamesaves to the USB drive and then store them on your computer. After that you can add in a larger harddrive and then use the USB drive to move the game saves to the new hard drive. Profiles can be added back through the playstation network and anything you downloaded should be in your download history.

Also I tried to find you a few pages that would help with upgrading yoru hard drive, but most of the pages were blocked at my workplace. I couldn't find any prices, but I will look this evening. You should be able to get a large hard drive for around a $100.00. If you are paying up to $300.00 though, then you might be better off buying a new PS3.

Just trying to save you some money, that's all. Hopefully I can be more helpful with prices when I get home.

The one thing not saved to your profile is videos you've bought from the store so make sure to transfer those and back up your trophies or they will be lost.

You can re-download them though, right?

No videos or music right now. I download game trailers sometimes but I just delete them after I watch em.

I dunno why I'm so low on hard drive space, I guess the DLCs take up a lot more than I thought, but then there's also a lot of games that I don't play anymore.. like i doubt after I get Killzone 3 I'll be needing the Killzone 2 DLCs that are just mutliplayer maps.. same with MW2. But I'm guessing I can't just delete a few maps, it would have to be all or nothing.

Most games have data for the game saves and for the game itself. If you stop playing the game, you can get rid of the game data and keep your saves. Devil May Cry IV had like a 5GB install to make the game load better while playing it. If for instance you played the game, you could always delete that game data, keep your save, and free up 5 GBs.

Only if you've backed them up otherwise sony leaves you up the creek without your videos.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

I'm just running low on hard drive space, that's all. I figured a newer model with a bigger hard drive would be better and I could sell the old one. But, i think I'm going to just delete the game data from some games I know i won't play again like Resident Evil 5 or Killzone 2, since it will hopefully just reinstall what it needs if I ever do decide to play again.

I had this problem when I bought my new PS3 so what I did was copy all of my game save files that I could (some games won't let you copy) onto a Sony Usb drive, not sure if any others work as only tried this. And then plug it into the new PS3 and save them onto there. As for DLCs etc just download them again from Playstation Store. That's what I did.

Get a new hard drive instead of new ps3. I konw that you can swap hard drive with xbox so why not with ps3.

Its realy easy to change the HDD on a ps3
take that little cover off the side
undo a little screw and slide it out
Im pretty sure its just a regular 11.5 inch hard drive like in most laptops
all you have to do is put it in and format it
