So I'm playing this oldie but goodie, which quite frankly is much better than Advance Wars or Fire Emblem. For those of you who don't know, Panzer General is an old TBS game, probably the strategy game that defined TBS game(also, it's made by the same company that made Final Liberation) You play the Germans as you launch a Blitzkrieg across Europe, although you can play as the Allies in Single Scenarios. Right now I'm on the Paris Level of the '39 Campaign. The French have been putting of somewhat of a weak fight so far, although that might change...

Panzer General is an amazing game, I loved watching the battle animations when I was younger. The pilots bailing out of bombers, the tanks exploding, the cavalry being faster infantry... good times. Allied General is another good expansion, but Panzer General 2 and 3 weren't that good in my opinion.

I loved Panzer General 2, it was my favorite game in the series, though I agree with you that 3 was a pale shadow of the first two.

Seriously, if anyone is looking for a way to kill far too many hours panzer general II is available at www.gog.com for $5.99 and is totally worth the price!

iPanzer '44 is another decent game. It had ground level battles where you controlled a tank personally(like World of Tanks) and could order Anti-tank weapons, infantry, scout cars, etc.

Back on topic, The French in Paris have provided tougher resistance than expected. The Airforce has been dealt with, but that group of damnable B1-Bis' have been a thorn in my side. Paris is about to be flanked from the East, and should fall within the week.

Don't you have a turn limit though?

Yes, of all the military might the Allies throw at me, the time limit is my biggest foe. Thankfully Blitzkrieg tactics have served me well so far. I might be able to conquer France in time for operation Sealion, and end British resistance in time for Barbarossa. The more forces I can muster against Stalin the Better, and I don't have to worry about the swinehound Americans... Yet.

I believe that pointing out there was a Warhammer game that used the Panzer General engine is both on topic for the thread and for the website.

It was made by SSi games as well.

Panzer General is a great game, does anybody know where I can get it?

It''s considered abandon-ware. That's all I can say.

It is indeed Abandonware (just like Fantasy General and Pacific General but not Allied General funny enough) and can therefore be obtained through sites like www.abandonia.com

Was a different version from the one I actually had (mine didn't have the animations) but I couldn't get the old one working so I discovered Abandonia. Only later I learned that I could use Dosbox to get my own Panzer General copy working again too.

As for playing the game, I've always found that when playing the Germans it's good to think in battle groups. Many scenarios have 3 possible axis for attack and I usually go for all of them.
Each Battlegroup usually has a composition of: 3 Dive Bombers - 2 Tanks - 1 Fighter - 2 Infantry - 1 Artillery. When battlegroups grow bigger they tend to keep this ratio (though I never take more than 3 artillery in my total army ever really). I also never invest in AA - Level Bombers - Tank Destroyers - Recon

No Recon because that's the one setting I always turn of. I always feel like I'm being shafted by an omniscient computer with fog of war on in this game.
