My opponent won the roll to go first, and plopped down everything except for the flamer vets in the vendetta, which was outflanking. In response, I somehow forgot that I was going second, and deployed in a great big line in range of all his guns.

This is what you get when you try to drill a hole in your head and nobody stops you! Egon was lucky.
So after I failed to seize the initiative, the Leman Russes & Hellhound moved up and opened fire, destroying the leftmost dreadnought, destroying the center defiler and immobilizing the other two while putting two wounds on the fat daemon prince.
In my turn, I said something along the lines of “well, crap.” So I ran everything I had forward, having to play uber aggressive to try and not get wiped. The princes jumped in the ruins, and the marines surged forward to get melta shots on his chimera full of squishy vets. My shooting phase started with the dreadnought missing the hellhound. Defiler #1 missed the chimera hiding in the backfield, and defiler #2 managed to hit and penetrate it, but it was negated by cover. The chaos marines missed with their first meltagun, but penetrated! Then I rolled a 1 for the damage.
Le sigh. After that the dreadnought charged the hellhound in
CC and missed with all of his attacks.
The meltavets stumbled out of their chimera, shotguns ready to shoot a daemon prince. The russes all moved around to get better shots on targets. My opponents shooting went completely south for him this turn, as almost everything missed! He did kill the other left hand dreadnought with his hellhound, and the marine squad in the crater had to go to ground against the executioner, but only lost a single model. The basilisks in the back helped my out by scattering onto his own guardsmen, killing enough to cause a morale check, which they failed! At this point in the game, he had killed more of his own models than I had!
In my turn two, the greater daemon popped out and made scary faces at the fleeing guardsmen, ensuring that they would run off the board asap. The fat prince flapped his way over to the demolisher and stunned it, while the other prince, needing 4’s, whiffed with all 5 of his attacks on the executioner!

At least I managed to knock out that chimera this round.
In turn 3 the vendetta and the hellhound finished off the two immobilized defilers.
The executioner killed all but one marine in the squad that had been in the open, forcing him to fall back. The fat prince, still in base contact with the demolisher, caused it to explode.
In my turn, the fat prince flew and hid behind a building, hoping to live long enough to eat the veteran squad or punch the basilisks. My last remaining dreadnought fired his missile at the vendetta, and missed. The other prince and the greater daemon both went after the executioner, but the greater daemon couldn’t make the distance, while the prince whiffed all 5 attacks again!
In my opponents turn 4, the executioner backed up and fired it’s plasmacannons at the greater daemon, but didn’t cause any wounds. The fat daemon prince was killed by the plasma vets in the remaining chimera, and the vendetta shook the dreadnought that was chasing it around the field. My last daemon prince was hit by the basilisks firing their earthshaker cannons and heavy bolters, causing three wounds. I rolled my saves, which I failed, and he died.
My turn 4 didn’t entail much, but the dreadnought stumbled forward while the marine squad fired their meltagun at the vendetta…
…and managed to explode it! Finally a shooting attack that did something useful,
lol!
In my opponents turn 5, the basilisks fired at my remaining marine squad, but only managed to kill two of them. They passed their pinning check, only to get flamed by the hellhound, and lost three more marines. All was well though, as the marines passed their morale check.
My turn 5 consisted of the greater daemon finally wrecking the executioner, while the dreadnought charged the flamer vets, but couldn’t break them. The die was rolled and the game was over!
So we tied the game on objectives as we each had one, but as this was a W/L tournament we went to tiebreakers, which was killpoints, and he had me by 2.
Good game and a great opponent! I think we are both going to cincycon this coming weekend, so hopefully we'll get paired up again and get a rematch in, and hopefully I can remember if I'm going first or not!
