Flame On!

ok, yesterday i went to the Yorkshire Open, its a tournament with 3 heats, 30ish at a heat, and the top 10 qualify for the final in a month or so. with me at this heat in wakefield was Matt (blood angels, played him last week and won 13-7), Richard (khorne, lost to him with my marines), Jimmy (drop pod marines, played him in one of the pod-batreps on this forum recently, for a draw)

all the games are Gamma level, with either Recon, Seek and Destroy, or Take and Hold. other than that its standard 1500, no comp.

i'm still drunk from the night before and had 5 hrs sleep.

my list:
shas'el, twin plasma, missile, HWMT - 98
shas'el, twin missile, plasma, HWMT - 97
6 stealths - 180
4 stealths - 120
4 stealths - 120
10 firewarriors, inc. shas'ui, devilfish MT DL - 205
10 kroot - 70
10 kroot - 70
hammerhead, rail, sms, MT DL TL - 180
hammerhead, rail, sms, MT DL TL - 180
hammerhead, rail, sms, MT DL TL - 180

Game 1:
space wolves, ven dread, termie runepriest, 3 units of wolf scouts, 2 big blood claw units, big grey hunter unit, 5 longfangs

table was really odd, i think it was a necromunda or city fight style one, covered in huge ruined buildings, lots of walls, not too much restricted though, was still firelanes and stuff across the board.
mission was seek and destroy, i win first turn, his ven dread re-rolls and so he wins first turn and takes it.

i got a first turn charge in on a unit of scouts, with 10 kroot! lol! i lost 4 he lost 3, mainly due to his counter charge meant that me attacking the edge of his unit didn't do anything, as he still gets all his attacks

i spent 4 turns or so doing predicatble JSJ elimination of his units, rail the dread get a weapon destroyed, re-rolled itself dead, lol. i avoid LOS to the longfangs unit almost entirely the entire game.

on my right flank i had a unit of maybe 15 blood claws with 3 powerfists go for some kroot in cover, he weathered 2 turns of a lot of firing walking towards me, until there's only 2 powerfists left, and i charged him with the 10 kroot, hit on 3's, and he fails 2 saves and gets no attacks on me, lol.

the runepriest with meltabombs and the 3 pfists in the grey hunter unit he was with, on my left flank managed to drag a hammerhead out of the sky, before i killed all the pfists and railed the runepriest in the FACE.
another hammerhead died to a meltagun shot at 11.5" from a scout.

another funny moment when a solo plasma gunner scout in the middle of the board, failed his morale check, passed his man alone check, hopped over a wall, and unleashed his gun into rear armor of a devilfish (which was Fish-O-Fury'ing the runepriest / GH squad) and promptly overheated himself, failed to glance the tank, and died. lol what a hero.

i killed everything apart from the longfangs who did pretty much nothing all game, i lost 2 hammerheads, 10 kroot, maybe 4 stealths, not sure

MASSACRE, 20-0 to me.

oh also in this first game, all 4 of us got massacres lol. (jimmy with drop pods, matt with blood angels, and richard with khorne) to the top tables!
there was 2 iron warriors playing each other, and another 2 iron warriors also playing each other. i think this might have been deliberate? i'd do it. 2 of those had the 9 oblits of doom. none of us had to play any IW and there was 4-5 of them, odd.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

game 2. hangover is starting to kick in, but i feel quite focussed.

raven wing I REND YOO!
landspeeder master
3 speeders (2 tornados, 1 with asscan and multimelta)
3 speeders (2 tornados, 1 with asscan and multimelta)
3 speeders (2 tornados, 1 with asscan and multimelta)
3 bikes, flamer meltagun
3 bikes, flamer flamer
2 attack bikes, h. bolters
2 attack bikes, h. bolters

10 speeders, 10 bikes. !!!
10 asscans, 3 multimeltas, 7 h.bolters
terrain is moderate, 7-8 smallish bits of size 3 stuffs. mission is again seek and destroy

6 speeders, 4 attack bikes go on the left, i go mostly on the right. FW unit in cover on the left, kroot in cover in the middle /right.

i think this game emphasised a lot of the finesse (?) of the tau, how they use the rules to the max, or rather how they *require* full use of the rules.

tries to shoot my HQ unit, oh no the devilfish is closer you cant its an IC

comedy moments:
4 attack bikes bosh forwards to crucify my firewarrior unit.
"thats a leadership test past the tank, its closer"
"no its a large target, i can ignore it"
"no, you can ignore infantry to shoot at tanks, but not the other way around.."
"hmm"

rulebook etc etc, oh look it works you can ignore infantry for tanks, but not tanks for infantry.
so his units roll their LD test. first unit, NINE! FAILED! h.bolters can't hurt the fish, WOOPS
second unit TEN! FAILED! WOOPSLOL
then he uses some speeders to kill the fish, its ok its empty. the drones survive though and are entangled.

next turn he tried again to shoot my HQ unit, oh no the devilfish is dead and the FW have run off, you cant its an IC and the ENTANGLED DRONES ARE CLOSERLOL. he uses 3 speeders to kill the 2 (free) drones (lol)

FW unit runs off after he kills 7 of them, 'are they bonded?' nope. 'oh you might as well take them off then' not just yet..
the 3 remaining FW runs 3" through terrain,

then the h.bolter bikes kill 2 more that they can see, the last guy runs 3" again and in the next turn he IC-protects my HQ suit (again) from a multimelta speeder that's really close.

the hq suit then shot at that speeder squad, and then charged it (str5 in assault baby) and gets a six to hit, a 5 to glance, and he passes his jink save for pretty much the only time that game (damnit, i really wanted to kill a vehicle in combat, tau never get to do that)

i'd taken 3 guns off of the speeders so far in this particular squad, and he then turboed the 2 remaining ones away from my crisis suit of combat powar, that crisis then hid behind the size 3 devilfish wreck and JSJ'd his stationary squad of 3 speeders in his own dzone that i'd kept stunning, and he'd not wanted to move because he didnt want to accept killing a speeder by moving away, in order to get 'glance only' (and the jink save)
i kept railgunning that squad as well, and took 2-3 guns out of the unit, killed 1 speeder, and immobilised 2 others, but they just wouldn't die

on the other flank (the game was kinda split into 2 seperate halves)
he managed to get first turn stuns onto 2 hammerheads, and then failed to hurt them the next turn so they escape certain penetration, phew. bike unit flames some kroot, i then charge with the other unit, tie him up for a turn or 2 but lose eventually combat (ive got way more attacks, but bounce off the T5)
in turn 2 i snipe the meltagun out of the other bike unit by nominating a save, he fails so no more melting of my hammerheads thank you please.
stealths kill the ravenwing master in turn 2 and a couple of speeders.

shas'el that i put on that flank, i also used to charge a speeder that i'd just taken the guns off of, i fail and he then charges me with attack bike and i die after a couple turns. that bike then gets in combat with 6 man stealth unit but we can't hurt each other.

anyway by the end i've lost 20 kroot, 4 stealths, the entire FW squad and a HQ
i've got alive 3 hammerheads, 10 stealth, a HQ

he's lost everything apart from 2 immobile speeders and 1 attack bike or something left

MASSACRE 20-0 to me

i think this guy might have been a bit spooked by tau, i'd guess he doesn't play against them much and didn't like being beat by an army he'd probably expect to stomp on. (lol)

matt jimmy and richard have all done well also, so we're side by side on tables 1, 2 3 and 4, for the final game, awesome

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

game 3, table 1, feral orks. (lucky, as next to me on table 2 is drop pods vs necrons. i would struggle a lot against either of those, but footslogging orks i am way happier about)

100 ish madboys, warboss on cyboars with 5 nob cyboar retinue of points.
5 normal cyboars, trappa unit, tankstickbombthrowguy unit, 10 squiggy thing unit
loads of big shootas, v. few rokkits, like 2 or something, no squiggoths, no force fields. time for submunitions then!!!! (each rail-hit would reasonably kill 5 models, thats 10 orks a turn from subs)

mission is take and hold, 15" deployments and objective is the centre of the table, aww crap. its nightfight-dawn too, aww crap.

i decide to refuse flank HARD and go all on my right flank. his deployment is standard ork 'fill the dzone'
half his army is just footslogging to the centre to score then....
first turn, not much, i miss all my railguns, kill a few guys
2nd turn, he is in charge range of kroot with the 5 normal cyboars and the warboss cyboars charge the front right hammerhead
oh hang on you killed 6 kroot in shooting so i need a test, FAILED, i run off, charge is FAILED, get back. warboss fails to hurt hammerhead.

ok crucial turn 2 now. i move all my skimmers forward into a wall of doom. they're all in a line, i tank shock them forwards as well, push the warboss unit back into his boys (so that they're more bunched up for my submunition blasts, hahaha)

i rapid fire under the skimmer wall etc, he can't charge through it (no, you can't move under a skimmer, no you can't move within 1" of a unit you're not charging)
i dump fire into the cyboar boss unit, kill most of it, and PIN IT! with gundrones off a fish on LD9!
i miss all my railgun shots again though. damnit.

i kill the stickbomma/rokkit units. ferals dont have klaws, so he's got pretty much no chance now of killing the skimmers, or getting into combat, so i'm just going to push the wall of doom forward, rapid fire str5 ap5 under it and march it forward onto the objective, tank shocking him off it if necessary, for the win

turn 3, shooting kills a stealth or something. so far he's killed 11 kroot, 2 stealths, 1 firewarrior. i've killed 20-30 models. he tries to get the normal cyboars to charge a stealth unit i had deployed too far away from the skimmer wall, it was running for safety but he gets high terrain move through a central wood, and 6 for fleet, and is within about 9" now.
but 2 of the unit have got half their bases still in the wood.

ohnoe that counts as moving out of terrain. even though the 3 of 5 model majority is out of the terrain, that doesn't matter as the unit is moving out of terrain. plus, if there's a mix of speeds in a unit, the whole lot moves at the speed of the slowest.
he rolls his 2D6" pick the highest and then double it for being cavalry, and gets 6". denied! i felt a bit mean about this, but on the other hand, he just wasn't in charge range. and i didnt want to get charged.

my turn i hose the cyboar unit down with the stealths, he pulls the rear ones as first casualities, thats the ones in the terrain then. so then when the other stealth unit then shoots them, i kill them without them getting any cover save..

finish off the warboss and trappa unit and squig unit and a madboy unit.

railguns all miss again. thats 9 missed shots out of 9. submunition does not have many better application than orks without KFF, maybe its karma for me being ruthless in this game.

anyway so by turn 3, i've killed all the cyboars, all the anti tank, i've got the skimmer wall up and i'm totally on track for a massive win, for the 60 pt total, jimmy has phased out some necrons on table 2 next to me so he's on 57 pts.

my opponent has to leave though, granted all the games all day have been running over schedule... we've ran out of time.

so anyway we have to end and we call it a 13-7, i'm sure it would have been a massacre given a few turns more, (even without any railgun hits)

13-7 to me
so! jimmy is best overall, i get best general! woot! matt is 5th, and richard is 16 (34 player total)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a really good tournament, i'm pleased with doing well although am sulking a little about not getting to finish the last game cos of the time restraints, i wanted to beat jimmy lol, im sure i'll get over that

the games were all cool, the 2nd game especially as i've not played anything like the speederwing before, and i had to think a great deal and plan a lot, not just in the management of my shooting in each shooting phase, but also planning several turns ahead due to all the mobility and angles and expected kills and so on. very tactical and i played really well i think. he was a good player but probably underestimated tau as he rarely sees them i think.

Looks like a good time, with a good diversity of opponents (at least that you faced). Railgun hammerheads....I love 'em so much, but you certainly do leave yourself open to having a little bad luck screw up your game plan. Thankfully for you, the submunitions would have just hastened things along....they weren't critical to the success of your battle.

How did you think you troops selections worked out? I'm still debating on what to do with the mandatory firewarrior selection and follow-up kroot selections for my own list. I find myself looking at a 6-man firewarrior squad and 3ish, 14-16 strong kroot squads. I can't decide if the devilfish and larger squad-size makes the firewarriors efficient enough for the cost, or whether it's just throwing more points at a poor unit in an attempt to make it better. Do you think being able to mount SMS on the devilfish will change your thoughts?

Elite selections as well I'm curious on. Any thoughts on changes, or were you pleased with the all-stealth performance? Facing a majority of non-MEQ opponents, just curious how your list-thoughts go.

Thanks for the report (no pics?), a nice read.

I´m afraid you won´t get any medals for the first game though, expensive, slow- moving and weak-shooting Space Wolf Packs advancing on foot towards mobile and very shooty Tau..? I can´t even believe anyone brings them to a torunie, Space Wolves (unless perhaps if they´re Drop Podding...)... They´re struggle against anything! But that´s another discussion I guess...

What will change with you rarmy with the new ´dex, you think..?

arrgghh i typed a really good post there and it got lost. anyway yea i kinda knew how that first game was going to turn out. i did have reserves about the sheer huge amounts of terrain on the table though, it was probably over 50%

and same for the last game too, if i could kill all the AT before a skimmer gets downed i'd win. the middle game was really challenging though.

grim, i love the kroot, they always help me. didn't do spectacularly in this tournament, but a good example is game 1, being the only thing he could potentially catch in combat he sent a big blood claw unit for a kroot unit deep in my corner, it meant walking over open grond for 2 turns which he didn't survive.

firewarriors are good aswell, but i wouldn't want any more of them. my opinion was i might as well mechanise them seen as i have to take 1+ squad, and i found the fish useful (skimmer wall in game 1, and majorly in game 3, and also for testing past and protecting IC's (game 2)

my troops support my real assets, rather than the other way around. i dont think they'd get much better at this if i spent more pts on them, so i keep them cheap. kroot need terrain, so with 3*16 you wouldn't often find spaces for them.

stealths are well cool, its definitely one of the strengths of the army.

in new codex? i think i might take lots of cheap crisis with shield drones. or if i used markers, i might take the fish off of the FW, and get a unit of pathfinders in it. and mount SMS on it then, as it'll hide more, being a PF fish.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I have a feeling that FCW squads are going to make a comeback thanks to the new Markerlight rules. The ability to improve BS and/or anti-cover save for a whole unit is obviously a major bonus for big units. It will become rare to see a 1,500 pt army without a unit of Pathfinders in a 'fish with SMS ("Hammerfish"?).

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Here's a tip, Ravenwing landspeeders/bikes do NOT get jinx in assault. The jinx save is applied only during the shooting phase.

Good report, miss the pics though

hahah lol. no jink save in assault. i did really hope i'd get to kill a vehicle in assault

yea sorry no pics, i dont have a camera. my phone has a 1.3mp cam in but bluetooth on my pc isn't working at the minute, i messed up all the drivers and settings trying to send java games to the phone... and haven't bothered to fix it yet, so i didnt take any pics.
also the reports themselves dont help, i didnt really show what actually happened in each game, i just sort of gave highlights from my perspective of funny / important moments.
