I recently finished my AoBR Warboss, and I'd like to know what you guys think about him. Tell me what you like/don't like about him and tell me what to improve

the green could use some highlighting because it a bit basic but other than that good stuff

Looks good, maybe a wash over the green skin to give it a bit more depth. Also drilling out the barrels of his gun helps to give it a little bit more realistic look.

Cheers, Whiteflare.

You can't fault it - it's neat and tidy, and a good finish. Provided it hasn't been sealed, you can always come back later with some shading and highlights.

Gun could do with a bit of Pin Vise treatment, and basing him would also improve the look.

Great job!

Thanks for the comments! I know about the barrels, I just need to look for a cheap way to drill them out. And I washed the skin, actually. But now that I look at it, I didn't use enough of the wash. A base will come eventually.

Pine vise is a reasonable tool to use for drilling out barrels. They're relatively inexpesnive. Just make sure you use the right sized bit. There are other methods for drilling out barrels, but I can't really impart knowledge there I'm afraid!

I agree with everyone else, aside from the slight lack of shading on the skin it's very hard to fault your painting. Good job.

How are you planning on basing it?

I will probably put some sand on it , like on photos in the Codex, or maybe ask my friend for a few SM bits, and try to make a marine corpse to put before his feet. I think it'd look cool.

He might be a little far forward on his base for a full on corpsefest, but a helmet and bits of kit would really pop.

Here's a basing guide

Thanks for the link, it's really useful. And one small question: is the Citadel Modelling Sand any different from normal sand? Because the only difference I see is that the grains of sand are much bigger. And I'd like to know if there could be a cheaper alternative to it.

What to improve:
-Skin is completely flat. Even a Thrakka Green wash would be a vast improvement.
-Clean up the eye a bit. Looks like there was a little brush slip with the red (those eyes are a bitch, aren't they?).
-Drill those barrels.
-Clean up the mouth. Right now, the lower teeth all blend together and it's nearly impossible to darken those gums for definition without messing with the finished teeth, so it pays to take your time from the get-go.
-Clothes could use a bit of shade/highlight.
-Lots of minor brush slips.
-A number of missed details (hoses painted over with the surrounding color, missed buckles, etc.).

Seems like a long list, but most of these things don't require that much more effort and/or practice to achieve. You're definitely on the right track and that's a perfectly playable piece.

Also, never EVER buy GW hobby/modeling supplies unless you've seriously weighed the convenience (the only time you shouldn't be slapped for considering is when standing in a GW store, barring the odd case of gift cards or the like) against the mediocre quality and grossly inflated price. Between Woodland Scenics, craft stores, and the great outdoors, there's always a better option.

Yeah, most of those missed details are either a direct consequence of brush slips or because of my shaky hands (fortunately, since I started painting, it got a lot better)

Easy technique for the flesh, base coat a medium green, wash with dark green, drybrush with medium green and then a lighter drybrush with lighter green.

Comes out looking something like this:

Remember the 6" rule. It only has to look good 6" away and your model certainly does! Good job.

It looks really cool too, but I prefer my Ork skin looking as it is (mind you, I applied some wash to the Boss after posting the OP).I just like it, hmm, cleaner. Even if it's not orky ;D

That's not my best example, but the only one I have a picture of.

But you're right, cleaner is better. Well, I think. Some folks like dirty Orks. We're just saying it lacks definition and you can get it without losing the freshly scrubbed look. If YOU like it, that's what's most important.

I've never tried it (I'm going to though) but I have a friend who actually plays Orks (I don't actually. I only own one box of Boyz) and he puts a coat of high-gloss over the skin. Makes them look...sweaty. The effect is cool.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My problem in my pic (and the reason he looks a bit dirty) is I had my paints too thick.

Yes. it requires a loan secured against your house. Any scenic sand will do. There's tons. Try not to go too fine grain as it's hard to create the impression of texture.

Though if you're going for actual sand, sugarsand or a really fine grain might be what you want. Regular grain sand, in scale to the minis, is about the size of small pebbles or cinders.

Looking good so far. I agree with all the others who say give the skin a wash. That will make all the difference. I have painted up about 3k worth of Orks and all I did was paint the skin with Thrakka Green and then wash it with Badab Black. That is a crazy easy way to get some orks on the table fast.
