Well it has been out for a few weeks and it is amazing!! It is a literal battle-top game experience on your pc. I love it, the campaign system reminds me of the classic board-game Samuri Swords or it's original title Shogun, coincidence?

You also have the option to create or join a clan online and gain fame and reputation battleing foes across the world!!

Total War has been using the campaign map since the very first Shogun back in the late 90's I believe it was. I always kind of thought of it as Civilization with Real Time battles and only 1 time period. I didn't like the current city system in EMpire, but the changes made in Shogun make it easier to manage and its kind of grown on me.

I didn't like Napoleon or Empire, so I was a little out of the Total War scene, but I'm liking Shogun. Good to see total war go back to the days of sword swinging masses where it belongs.

The only thing I can say I don't like is that you can't apply upgrades to units you already have, which I hope is changed in a patch or a mod somewhere. Right now I'm keeping my eye on the Realism mod, but I'm waiting for some more development before trying it. EDIT: Archers are a little OP too, but it doesn't bother me too much. I'm a cavalry man

Japanese culture and history fascinates me so of course I was going to grab this, I spent years playing the first one.

I love this game, its basically everything Total War should aim for, realism, balance and excellent graphics.
Im a major fan of the whole series although Nap and Emp didnt grab me as much, I can think of nothing more boring then having one line of gunmen shooting another army of gunmen, I like to see swords swinging and the sky full of arrows.
This game was full of nostalgia for me and it was extremely satisfying to see those little soldiers which used to look like little blobs with swords actually look alive and breathing, especially Warrior Monks which i have always loved. Hero units werent dissapointing, i didnt remember them being in the first game and people kept prophesising doom and gloom about overpowered units but I think their quite balanced, their powerful enough to give you an edge in a situation but not so powerful as to be able to single handedly take on an army, except for maybe fully upgraded Shimazu Katana Heroes, they are quite deadly.

There are some great additions, the use of Siege Weapons and Ninjas makes for some entertaining gameplay, especially if you decide to fight an army of Hattori Kisho Ninjas in a siege, with the new AI its like fighting shadows. Shadows which can lob bombs at you.
Archers are extremely powerful in this game, nothing brings fear to me more then an army with lots of archers, especially if they are Chosokabe. Arrows are extremely effective in this game, I personally love it for the realism, nothing annoyed me more then when in Medieval 2 people get hit with arrows shake it off and get back in line, in Shogun 2 even a shot in the foot will put a soldier out of combat. With that said I love the dramatic poses these guys do when they die or when they are laying on the ground dying, it really makes me feel for them but it also makes the experience all the more realistic.

I do have some qualms with this game but they are extremely minor........

-The general is a supporting character primarily and a combatant second. This makes sense in a way but I would like it if you had the option to use a general who was more combat orientated, I mean even Ashigaru can potentially wipe out a general and his body guard.
-Sea Battles, are nice but without cannons I dont see much fun in it.
-Unit Diversity, I knew this was how the game was going to be but I would have liked a little more diversity or even foreign factions, Wakou Pirates, European settlers, Mongolians and other Asian nations have had minor or major roles in Japanese history. Even though some of them arent chronologically accurate I still think it would have been nice for some diversity. Oh well maybe they will bring out an expansion pack.

I was thinking of buying the big pack on steam so I can LAN it up at this years quakecon. What's got me interested is Medievil Total War 2, but nobody is bring it up in regards to it being good or bad. It's got a pretty good review score, and I'm wondering what other people have to say about it.

I haven't bought it. Been playing Napoleon again, though I might pick it up later once it drops a bit. Really, I just want Rome: TW 2 and a WWI/Great War. Keep WWII and a Modern TW out of the series. Stop the timeline at the Boer War/WWI and I'll be happy

I liked Medieval 2. I wouldn't mind seeing that get a graphical overhaul as well. The gameplay is pretty solid as is, I think it just needs more gumption

Rome was awesome, but yeah all the games are very cool and awesome. I always tell people who want to know about Warhammer that 40k is like Dawn of War/Starcraft and Fantasy is played like Total War.

I have started to download but have not checked out this:

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
