Man, I just read the Memphis Factory Store birthday events...
All they need to do is get a forgeworld stand and hand out a miniature at the door and they'll make Games Days irrelevant (moreso then they already are to some folks). I don't remember the bunker/HQ at the People's Republic of Glen Burnie having 2 days of what looks like pretty damn fun and varied GW Hobby goodness, although I did criminally underuse it, so I may have just completely missed out.

Oh, GW USED TO have all kinds of great stuff at the HQ Battle Bunker in Glen Burnie and there were events where it was open continuously for an entire weekend like that too. I also attended an event there once where they had sculptors from the Nottingham Design Studio come over and sculpt in front of customers while answering questions. Just a few years ago it was a marvelously fun and exciting place.

Turn your thinking around 180 degrees.
Ed Spettigue took over as head of promotions, and the improvements last year at Games Day stem from his involvement. He also took over operating the Memphis bunker events. Where do you think his test bed for Games Day is? )
The Bunker event on the 16th/17th looks awesome. But it's just a precursor to Games Day Chicago.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you "180 degrees" on this one, Mikhaila. Games Day was great long before Ed Spettigue got hold of it. The only really bad one was 2009 due to all the sudden cost cutting. Last year was simply an attempt to return to earlier glory days by funneling the money they had been putting into multiple Games Day events the past few years into a single event in spite of the cost cuts still being made all around. It was somewhat successful, but still a far cry from Games Day events of years past. I've been to US Games Day events every year they've had them since 1993 and I've seen them at their best. Also, some of the decisions made by the person you mention regarding "community building" in my area during the past two years helped destroy the great community we already had at the HQ Bunker rather than build it. It almost wrecked the other area stores as well, but fortunately the effort imploded before it could do damage to every store in the area. It got so bad a lot of people wouldn't even go to the Bunker any longer due to the bad behavior proliferating there by the supposed "community builders". Those same people were even rude to the store employees. Meanwhile, people like me and my family and other long-time regulars at the Battle Bunker who had helped build the massive, family friendly community we had there were completely ignored and cast aside. I'm not a fan of the efforts made by that person at all.

Kind of hard to see what you want to disagree about.)
I was only discussing the plans for the bunker birthday, and how they lead into Games Day Chicago, and that Ed was responsible for getting Games Day back on course from what it was in 2009. The '180' degree comment was in reference to the bunker event making GD irrelevant, when some of the events at the bunker are preparation for events at Games Day.
No disagreement at all that there were some great games days in the past.

Yeah, I'm quite jealous of the Memphis Bunker event. We did used to have stuff that great at the Maryland HQ four and five years ago, so I know what we're missing. Decorum prevents me from elaborating further on the other stuff in public, but many former Bunker employees and customers will know of what I speak.

Unfortunately, 2009 was my first GamesDay- even had my younger brother come up from South Carolina to attend with me. Luckily, 2010 made it all OK for me . Now that a Bunker is about to reopen in MD, I've made my peace with GamesDay being in Chicago.
There's also the plus that I can (hopefully) head up to Mike's store and maybe see what they're working on for it ahead of time

You'll definitely see some stuff. Things are starting to appear in the bunker that are too big to hide. Giant Space Fishies (screamers) seem to be manifesting from pink foam, and plans for a large spacegoing pyramid are scattered about another table. 100 painted thousand sons are on my shelves at home waiting for a sealer coat. An Eldar Forgeworld fleet and flock of Dark Eldar ravens are flying about the bunker now. 60 inclubi and 60 shades are painted, about 800 more dark eldar just arrived and we start assembling them this week. And more is on the way.
You feel free to show up Steve, I'll chain you down to a chair put you to work. Automatically Appended Next Post: More on topic: I can't quite make out the keychain, just an imperial eagle on it?
