I have some Dark Elves sitting around. I got the bite to get them starting with Mordheim, but the April "Mini of the Month" Challenge is Elite/Special units. In debating what to paint, I had several options to choose from, but I when with a Witch Elf.

I'd been toying around with various color palettes to use, mostly to make my army stick out from the other Dark Elf armies. And an idea came to mind: Witch Elves (and Witch Elves only) as Drow. The Brides of Khaine are supposed to be possessed of unearthly beauty, so why not go grey? I had a Witch Elf painted already from my Mordheim warband, so I decided to do a quick coat of grey skin to see how it would look.

Proof of Concept:

As you can see, she was originally done with the super pale skin. I used the Ogryn Flesh wash over the grey, then highlighted over it with mostly Codex Grey with a dot of Ghost Grey and some leftover Ogryn Wash.

Here's the actual entry, primed with a basecoat of the primary colors: Codex Grey for the skin and hair, Imperial Purple for the cloth, Black for the metals.

And here she is with her first set of highlights. Almost has a sort of Storm (like from the X-Men) feel to her. Note the brown flesh wash. The barbed wire around her leg will be painted black in a later step. Ghost Grey for her hair, and Imperial Purple with a dash of Warlock Purple for the clothe.

Panty Shot:

Loving the grey skin! I think it would look effective across a few units, but you'd want a really cohesive scheme across the whole army so they still fit in with the rest of the force.

Here she is after her last set of skin highlights:

I think the brown wash added a little life to her skin, makes her look exotic and alive, not grey and dead. Maybe that's just my eye, though. :p I could have left her there, but she seemed a bit...dull. There wasn't enough contrast between the three colors so I added a touch of gold and some actual Warlock purple.

The Warlock Purple really stands out in the photo, but true light it's not nearly so glaring. And continuing with contrast, I based her in a desert theme. Brightens up the model, I think:

And to close: Panty shot.

For the army proper, the clothing would be white, and the base would be a snowy waste. The same color of metals would be used, as well. This was just a one-off for a lark more than anything else. I'm pleased with how the skin turned out in the end, too!
