I'm looking to start collecting/building armies for WOTR... I might play a little too...
Is the LOTR game related to WOTR somehow... and I don't just mean fluff or ip wise.

Same miniatures, but basically a completely different game. It's closer to Warhammer the LotR. At least LotR stayed true to Tolkien. WotR is a load of BS if you ask me, but yeah, I'm probably a bit biased.

a bit biased is an understatement.
WoTR is mass battles, think huge conflicts, in the world of Middle Earth. SBG is skirmish encounters in the same setting.
Some players prefer one or the other, some like both. They are very different systems.
Google is your friend man. There are reviews of both games, the GW website has lots of information -- do a bit of homework and research. When you have specific questions after reading a bit, drop a line here and we'll help you out further.

Yeah, just a small one
But basically, the above post is spot on. IMO, LotRSBG rocks, WotR sucks, but a lot of people like WotR and hate SBG, a lot of people love them both. It's just down to opinion.

I like both systems but prefer to play WotR - it's a simple and accessible game mechanic that can be played out of a single book.

LotR Strategy Battle Game = LotR rules scaled up for larger skirmish battles. 'Cause LotR bogs down if there are too many models on the table- like, more than 20 or so per side.
WotR = not LotR, other than sharing the models and the 'might' mechanic. I'm on record as saying that WotR is possibly the best wargame rules set GW has ever produced.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.
