Ok so after much much deliberating i have made my decision on the direction i want to take in 40k and that Direction is a rather Chaotic one. I toyed with the idea of Thousand sons, Night lords and even thought a little bit about word bearers but my thing is -

1. I dont like obliterators
2. Im not a fan of daemons.

So i sat down and had a think, which of the 4 Chaos gods are the most appealing to me, Slaanesh is kinda cool with all Sex, Drugs and Sonic blastin` rock and roll. Tzeentch is not appealing to me with its big feathery bird daemons and such and Nurgle is just as bad. But Khorne is just....well its just cool!!! Blood and slaughter etc its exactly what i expect my bad guys to be, blood crazed fanatics who will stop at nothing to get into battle and maim, tear and destroy every enemy they can get their hands on.

SO, Khorne it is but i am not a huuge fan of the headlong Khornate charge armies who throw every unit they have into the meat grinder of close combat, i want my guys to be Khornate but i dont want all Berzerkers. Im going for a more of a combined arms force here. An army dedicated to the blood god can spill more blood if it wins more battles and the way to win more battles is with some balance!

And i must say one thing that swayed me as well was the lovely Forgeworld resin kits for the World eaters to convert normal marines into World eaters with torsos heads and shoulder pads.


But they dont come cheap at 20 quid a pop! i plan on kitting the entire army out in forgeworld world eaters conversion kits to make them all look wicked cool etc. And theres the World eaters dread....and the world eaters termies....this could get expensive!

anyways - the first step of my new force has been taken. I managed to find a local store having a 40% off sale on GW kits and grabbed myself a box of CSM for £13 and a small 3 man CSM box for £3 for colour testing and paint experiments.

heres the CSM guys unopened and ready to be put together when my first bath of Forgeworld stuff arrives to convert them.

and here are a couple of my test subject in Chaos Black undercoat from GW ready to be tested out on.

I want to go with a traditional Dark red colour with gold trim on my guys and have also gone and bought myself a can of "The army builder" Dragon red primer to make things a little bit easier.

Im going to try out red on black but i only have 2 red paints at the moment those 2 being "Red gore" and "Blood red" from GW, I have never tried a red army and always go with darker colours but im going to be spending alot of money on this force i want to become a better painter and experiement with these guys to make them look good.

Anyways thats the first step of the long road to glory for Khorne, hopefully my World eaters conversion kit will turn up tommorow and i can begin assembling my first squad.

You do realize you can use gw plastic berserkers right?

Yeah i realise that. My thinking is that i may use the GW plastic set for my Berzerker squads and the forgeworld stuff for my other units.

Such as the CSM guys with Bolters and and the Havocs and the Chosen CSM with Meltas etc etc etc.

I agree. I use a mixture of both GW and FW bits for my Khorne Berzerkers. I absolutely hate the bulky bolt pistols on the GW berzerkers, so I use CSM bolt pistols or regular SM if I order them from Bitzbox or Let the Dice Decide. I also use a half and half mixture of Scab Red and Blood Red to get a nice thick dark red.

Looking forward to see the results! Those FW kits look sweet!

Yeah i agree, i think some parts of the Berzerker box sets are good but alot of it looks quite awful.

Im not a big fan of the running poses that they are all in either, i know they are supposed to be charging into combat but they look less menaching and cool and a bit more lord of the dance crazed idiots.

Kinda regretting undercoating my 3 test models in Chaos black now as it is very difficult to get a decent red on them!

think i will be waiting for my red spray paint to arrive for undercoat before i even think about painting the first Berzerkers.

Ok well my forgeworld bits havent arrived yet which is dissapointing since i ordered them last week!

However i have now accumulated a nice little chunk of models from ebay for a very good price indeed.

I sold 2 of my wave serpents and some vypers and raised a few pennies and then won a great auction in the final seconds for £30

and got -

1 Chaos lord model
5 Chaos Terminators
11 Chaos space marines
6 havocs with heavy weapons

Im pretty pleased with that overall and to go along with the 10 CSM that i already have it brings together a nucleus of a force. Not one that i planned on having! but it gives me models to get started with on my army.

Now im going to need some plastic paint stripper if anyone has any ideas on good brands please let me know!

Ok so i am still waiting on my world eaters conversion set to arrive!! it says its been shipped on FW so hopefully turn up around lunch time today with any luck.

I decided that after waiting so long to get my stuff i would get on with a test model, however my dragon red spray paint from the army builder has not arrived yet either!! so i had to do a little bit of mixing with some GW "red gore" and "Blood Red" to make an undercoat which i think looks quite good.

Here is a WIP shot of my first World eater space marine with a bolter, here he is without any hands or even a gun (the poor lad)


So i took a pic and had a look at some of the bits id missed etc and touched him up slightly and then added his unpainted and un base coated bolter, with a little more mixing for the undercoat on the armour i painted his hands then went on to do the bolter itself and finally add gold trim to the hand gauntlets.

So this is my first completed guy, i think he looks quite good and i did put a fair bit of effort into painting him, i applied a wash of Ogryn Flesh to fill in the recesses and to make him look a bit more battered and old. Im trying to learn about proper highlighting and layering to improve the look of my models. Please tell me what you think guys and if there are any ways to improve him??

Ok update my fellow Dakkites, Well finally after over a week my stuff from Forgeworld showed up! and to be honest it was a massive pain in the ass filing out all the torsos with fat chunks of resin without

A- Killing myself with resin fumes
B- Chopping the lovely belts of my blood crazed lunatics which cost me many pennies to acquire.

But i managed it eventually and really i think it is WELL worth the hassle of doing a load of filing and cutting, washing and drying so that i can have the fun of making my own world eaters marines and i think the results are great. Ive done a few little conversions with one of my faves being the massive chain glaive Zerker made using the banner pole from the CSM boxed set and an ork chainsaw. i think he may need re modelling though as im not 100% happy with his weapon position and the weapon looks a bit sl

So anyways heres a bunch of pics of my first Berzerker squad.

The first group shot of all 10 guys converted and built! ive saved enough to do a couple more Berzerkers as soon as break up some of my other CSM to convert them.
Closeup of the skulll champion who was a mix of the CSM champion sprue and the forgeworld bitz.
Gangsta style sideways on bolt pistol action going on here, minor conversion.
Another little conversion here just using the bolter arm to hold and extra knife.

Mr Chain glaive! needs some work still but i like the idea which i shamelessly stole from the 40 rule book!

Thanks for the kind comments guys i am now in possesion of some red undercoat spray paint huzzah!!! i have also managed to mix a pot of red gore and blood red 50/50 and have begun painting my marines!

So far 2 CSM With bolters have been done and painted up in the livery of Khorne. The first tactical squad is not going to have World eaters pads for the simple reason that i just cannot get the models to dissolve their glued bonds! ive lost 2 CSM guys i got from Ebay in an untimely manner as they melted and snapped when trying to change them!

Ill try and get some more pics up tommorow when ive done a Berzerker !

Ok guys well ive done a few more guys from my first unit of CSM its taking me a long time as i am really trying to focus on the quality of the models here. And i think the results are looking good.


Hope you guys enjoy them as ive worked hard at these boys and im proud of the results so far.

Those guys look really good!However,Are you thnking of highlighting a bit more?Try using blood red on the rims of the armor?I really like the crisp lines with coolors espally with with the sarge.But you can see where the gule has spilled into the crevises of the neck.Over all these guys will look amasing on the battle feld!

Unfortunately the models were bought from ebay and then i had to strip the paint, the glue is from the original guy who i bought the models from. I agree it doesnt look great but theres not alot i can do. I am hesitant to go too over the top with the highlights as i dont have alot of experience with it and i dont want it to look to over the top.

This is my first unit, 6 more guys to do then i can get on to doing my Berzerkers.

I have just bought another box of CSM and some more Forgeworld bits to do my 2nd Berzerker squad. Next thing i need to look for are some bits to convert my old Rhinos!

I like your models, but the red is alittle to dark for my liking. I always thought berzerkers had lighter red, more orange, this looks like it would fit more on some word bearers IMO.

Never be afraid to go over the top! That's what chaos is all about ;P

Oh, there your first guys? My bad, there looking really good then bearing in mind the cercam stances of buying them of eBay. Plus it looks like a good deal kinda.(?)

11 CSM guys with 1 melta and 2 plasma, Power fist sergeant.

5 Havocs with heavy bolters.

5 Chaos Terminators.

Got them all for 29 quid! So yeah it was a good deal.

Painting wise i have experience of painting models but not so much with highlighting. My other army is guard and i just bang on the colours with them and then put an ink wash over them. Very functional but looks good IMO.

With these guys im taking a bit more time to get them right but the highlighting is difficult at times i dont want to make it look ridiculous and mess it up by doing red lines everywhere!

Ill keep trying to improve as time goes on though.

Ok update time, i have been building and buying! i managed to get another conversion kit from Ebay for 13 quid in total which i thought was great, got another cheap box of marines as well and also a Vindicator and Rhino! So the army is coming together nicely. I managed to get some Lightning claws and have got myself a Lord with Dual claws!

Here is the lord first of all.

So yeah thats the lord sorted now onto my second Berzerker squad.



So thats squad 2 of Berzerkers, which brings the total to 16 , 2 squads of 8 and also my lord.

Speaking of which heres a little picture of them all together, Say cheese for the blood god guys!

You could really make your life a lot easier by using white primer, y'know. White primer, coat of blood red, wash or two in baal Red, drybrush/highlight in blood red (and again in blazing or fiery orange if ya want), Tin Bitz trim, highlight in bronze, wash the whole thing in devlan mud, add some patine around rivets and such, and then add the eye glow. Done.

Ha!Lucky!Every now and again there's those kind of deals pop up on ebay...By every now and again I mean about a month...week... I don't know ... ...

Not a bad idea, i actually have red primer spray and once they have been initially primed they look a bit like this....


He has been simply spray painted with "The Army Painter" Dragon red spray. Noting else has been done to him at all. After that i would usually apply a darker coat of my own mixed paint which is marginally darker.

In the next pic there is a Khorne Berzerker on the left who has the second coat of paint on with my own mix, at this point there dosent look to be a massive amount of diffrence im still trying to decide wether its worth the extra coats.

As you can see the Zerker is defo a bit darker, i am going to try the wash of Baal on top of the spray paint and see what it looks like and try and get some pics up.

Also, I say use the Forgeworld parts for the real berzerkers and Champions, leave the cruddy plastic GW bits to non-berzerkers. Also, I think you would like Obliterators more if they were converted ones instead of the crappy metal GW ones. I could help ya with that, Oblits are my specialty, and they're almost necessary for a viable Chaos army nowadays.

Ok ive taken on board some of the advice left by you guys and i have made a bit more progress and painted another 3 guys.

Ive gone for a slightly different approach here and have gone for my usual coats of paint, followed by a good wash of Devlan mud over the top and i think the results are good. I am happier with these guys than with the other batch.

Wow, the red is really nice! And the FW kits are sexy as hell.

Great work so far, I look forward to seeing a Landraider in the future maybe?
