Just bought the ratcatcher hamelin, and he comes with a 50mm base. the card says 50mm but the base pictured is obviously 40mm and fits him a lot better.
why this insanely large base for a stick-thin model? is it even legal to swap it to a smaller one?

If the card says 50mm and he comes with the 50mm, then 50mm is what you use. Using a different base size would, technically, be against the rules and would require opponent consent.

This, of course, is presuming nothing has been FAQed otherwise!

Well, I'm not read up on everything in the second book yet, but it might have something to do with his (for lack of a better word) "rebirth."
The larger base gives him a larger footprint, therefore a wider/longer range.

its the old model mate. the new one has a 30mm base and no doggie, since nix gets buffed badly by the plague and becomes creepy.

Yeah... I'm behind on getting the book and just now slowly reading up on it.

As for the first one... Clearly, it's because you've got 1 base to represent 2 models. Nix is on a leash. If you look at the approximate distance he could reach with hamelin's arm extended, it's a bit under 25MM by my guesstimate. So, double that & voila.

Just my take on it, though. The official guys on the Wyrd forums could probably tell you, specifically, though.

The base size of a model in Malifaux has nothing to do with the size of the model, it instead has to do with the concept of equivilancy in the game. Specifically 30mm model drops one counter when killed, a 40mm model drops two counters when killed, and a 50mm model drops three counters when killed.

Its also important to note that there are two Hamlins in the game, the first, and I belive the one your talking about, is Hamelin the Ratcatcher he is a minion and should include a dog, Nix, that goes on the base with him. The second is Hamelin the Plauged, this model is a master and no longer includes Nix, which is now a seperate model.

Hope this explains the answer to your question a bit better.

the counters i had not considered, which makes the matter even more surreal. the skinny hamelin and his tiny dog (half size of a zombie chicuacua) leaves behind 3 corpse counters?! thats more then enough body parts to make a massive flesh construct with 1 bodypart to spare.

as for the 2 kinds of hamelin, we covered that earlier in the thread.

If anything is still unclear, here it is, straight from the books:

Hamelin the Ratcatcher (Minion) - 50mm base.

Hamelin the Plagued (Master) - 30mm base.

That part was not unclear.
He wanted to know WHY it was that way.
