Had a game with Shaun on Sunday. He's been fine tuning his Guard list and I think he has it sorted now almost.

Deployment

Shaun won the roll off and went first. He put one objective 12" from the board edge top left corner. I put another 12" from the board edge mid field near a ruin. Shaun placed the last one in the shrine ruin middle of the board.

Shaun deployed first putting the CCS melta unit, Vet plasma unit, two Russes and both Vendettas on the left flank. In the centre he put a single Manticore inside a large ruin. On the right he put all remaining units and the other Manticore positioned in a ruin. The Storm Troopers will be deep striking using the re-roll scatter mission rule.

I deployed all my Battlewagons on the right flank which I would use terrain as I move to block LOS from Shauns forces plus his Vendettas and Russes would need to move to be in range, well the Vendettas anyway. I put the Lootas in two seperate ruins one unit was in the ruin near the objective my side and inside the ruin the Gretchin tucked away. The two Dethkopters would outflank.

* Tactical Notes

I think I'm going to struggle with this much amount of mech due to my limited amount of fire power and I haven't got first turn for any alpha strikes which isn't cool. At least I've out deployed Shaun putting my force all one one flank meaning a good portion of his will be out the fight for a few turns at least.

Target wise I'll be going for the Vendettas first and hopefully take them out to stop side armour shots. I'll be going for Manticores next though one is easy to reach the other will be a bit of a issue. After that will be busting open Chimeras and killing Guardsmen and power klawing those Russes.

Turn 1

I attempt to seize the initiative and going against Guard with serious fire power is never a good thing! I fail :( I just hope my force field holds out.

Shauns turn he turbo boosts the Vendettas across the board long ways to get into range and to get a cover save from the Lootas. He slowly moves the Leman Russes out as the CCS melta and Veteran plasma on the left flank move and claim the objective. He moves the rest of his tanks around a bit on the right flank.

Shooting he drops Manticore missiles on the Battlewagons but thanks to KFF one Battlewagon is just weapon destroyed.

My turn I move all Battlewagons forward 12" towards the shrine ruin, I point one Wagon front facing towards the Vendettas to block side armour shots.

Shooting Lootas fire at Vendetta on the left flank and score weapon destroyed. Lootas in the ruin fire at the other Vendetta and score immobilised; which means it is wrecked thanks to going flat out

* Tactical Notes

Ok not a bad first turn I've managed to take down a Vendetta and minimised the fire from one a little bit. I am just hoping those Dethkopters come on soon...

Next turn I'll move the Wagons up using the shrine ruin for cover and hopefully can tank shock something. I also might be tempted to get the Warboss out and waaagh! towards the Manticore on the right flank and take it out.

Turn 2

Shaun calls for reserves and the Storm Troopers come, they scatter from there position by the Lootas on the left flank and land the other side of the ruin. Luckily for Shaun no dangerous terrain tests!

Movement I don't think Shaun does a lot looking at the picture..

Shaun shooting he launches more Manticore missiles and manages to destroy a Boyz Battlewagon right in front of the Bosses Wagon. The Vendetta takes some shots at the front armour of the Nobz Battlewagon but does nothing. Storm Troopers blast the Lootas killing two; they pass morale.

Orks turn I call for reserves and both Kopters come on the right flank by the lone Manticore. I then move the rest of the Battlewagons forward though the Boyz now out their busted Wagon I hoped to move onto the shrine ruin but they got poor terrain rolls and run effectively blocking my Wagons.

Shooting the battered unit of Lootas fire at the Storm Troopers but only kill on due to poor rolls. The other Lootas fire at something else though I can't remember what. Dethkopters launch rokkits into the back of the Manticore but just miss :(

In assault Kopters charge and explode the Manticore, they take no wounds

* Tactical Notes

Could have been better this turn but at least a Manticore is down. I was hoping to take out the other Vendetta but Shaun turbo boosted it away back to where it deployed so was out of range of the Lootas. I would have also liked to get that unit of Boyz on the shrine objective too.

Hopefully this turn I'll be in tank shock range and I can get the dethrollas into use smashing Chimeras to pieces. I'm hoping that Vendetta will come forward and I can shoot it too. One thing I can be certain off is the other unit of Lootas will die thanks to the Storm Troopers on the door step.

Turn 3

Shaun moves the Vendetta 6" so it can fire this turn and moves the melta CCS away from the left flank objective to support the Storm Troopers with fire power. The Leman Russes start coming out to play while the CCS plasma and another plasma unit move to blast the Dethkopters.

Shooting the last Manticore fires at the Warbosses Wagon and busts it open; they pass pinning test. Vendetta fires at the same Battlewagon as last time on the front armour but does nothing. Storm Troopers and supporting CCS waste the Lootas. CCS plasma and supporting plasma unit try to blast the Kopters but are out of range, though one dies to mass multi lasers.

My turn I move the Boyz out the busted Wagon onto the shrine objective and claim it. I move the single Kopter towards the CCS plasma Chimera while the Warboss and Nobz move out of terrain following the two remaing Battlewagons; the Battlewagons tank shock two Chimeras score stunned and immobilised on one carrying meltas and weapon destroyed and immobilised on the other.

Last Loota unit fires at the side armour of the CCS melta by the Storm Troopers which gets a cover save, they immobilise it so at least it cannot go back and support the left flank objective I guess. The single Kopter blasts the CCS plasma Chimera but fails to damage it.

Dethkopter charges and fails to hit the CCS Chimera which means the Kopter is dead next turn; lol.

* Tactical Notes

Not a impressive third turn. All I've managed to do is immobilise some tanks and that's about it, not very good at all :( even the dethrollas failed but it is 33% chance to wreck a vehicle I guess.

At least now I'm in range to smash stuff so looks like I'm going to rolla stuff and hopefully get out and smash in assault; hopefully.

Turn 4

Shaun moves his Vendetta forward, the Manticore moves to get LOS on some Battlewagons. Both Russes roll out and the remaining Chimeras shift about a little bit.

Shooting the Kopter gets toasted by plasma. The Boyz on the objective get shot up by multi laser, plasma and heavy flamer leavinlg only four left who fail combat and run away! Leman Russes and Vendetta fires at the troops Nobz Battlewagon but does nothing or the KFF makes the save, though it does take a weapon destroy result.

My turn I move one Battlewagon 12" and tank shock the melta Vets in front and the CCS plasma tank; melta Vets are ok and the CCS is fine taking little or no damage. I pivot the other Battlewagon so it moves length ways across the board and tank shocks the same plasma Chimera again and the melta one the other Battlewagon just did, it wrecks the plasma Chimera and wrecks the melta one - due to Battlewagons been placed every where the meltas cannot deploy as within 1" and are destroyed! Nobz Battlewagon moves 12" and the Nobz bail out ready to smash open a plasma Veteran Chimera supporting the CCS plasma unit. Warboss and Nobz move towards the explosed plasma Veterans near the exploded Manticore position on the right flank.

I call a waaagh! to get the Warboss into assault. Shooting Lootas fire at the Chimera the Nobz are going to assault hoping to explode it and get the Guardsmen inside but they fail.

In assault Warboss and Nobz batter the Guardsmen who fail morale and run off, they cannot regroup as under half strength. The Nobz smash open the Chimera spilling plasma Veterans who pass a pinning test.

* Tactical Notes

Not bad this turn taking out two three Chimeras and two Guardsmen units though the Nobz are now exposed and Leman Russ Battle Tanks are close and I don't like that one bit!

Next turn I'll move the Gretchin out the ruin to get the objective in front of them as next turn could be the last go. I'll get the Nobz back in their tank if they survive and back it up onto the shrine ruin. The Big Mek i'll dettach from the Warbosses unit and hide behind the ruin to get 4+ cover save to the tank as nothing can see the Mek. I'll hopefully do more juicy tank shocking as well.

Turn 5

First two things Shaun do is disembark his CCS stranded in the immobilised Chimera and moves them back towards the left flank objective. He then turbo boost the Vendetta towards the objective my table side but it about 1" away from contesting it. I think that's about it. He also moves his Storm Trooper unit over towards the Ork held objective.

Shooting pretty much everything possible shoots at the Nobz on foot which smashed the Chimera including the Russes but thanks to my luck three Nobz survive and pass morale. I think that is about it.

My turn I tank shock one Battlewagon at a Chimera holding some melta Veterans and wreck it. I tank shock the CCS plasma tank and Manticore taking out the Manticore. The three Nobz get back into their tank which backs up onto the shrine objective claiming.

Shooting Lootas try desperately to take out the Vendetta but fail :(

* Tactical Notes

Not bad turn as I've managed to take out another Veteran Squad and also the last Manticore but the Manticore wasn't doing a fat lot anyway. The right flank of the board is pretty much clear, though that annoying Vendetta is right in my face and I failed to pop it!

Turn 6

We roll for it and game carries on. Shaun moves all available tanks back towards the objective left flank making a wall of armour around it. He moves the Vendetta so now contesting my objective, damn!

Shooting he blasts the Lootas with the Vendetta and Storm Troopers killing them. He blasts the Nobz tank hoping to get them out with plasma guns and the Leman Russes but it doesn't happen thanks to the KFF. The exposed meltas blast the Battlewagon which just wrecked their tank via tank shock but only score immobilised result.

My turn I cannot do anything about the Vendetta so my hope lies in clearing those Leman Russes and the wall of armour. I move the Battlewagon which just flattened the Manticore towards the Leman Russes and bail out ready to assault; shame I couldn't tank shock as I would have pivoted the tank taking it off the board :( . Boyz bail out the immobilised Battlewagon ready to multi assault the melta and plasma Veterans.

No shooting so assault. Boyz multi charge the plasma and melta Veterans, the plasma all die but the meltas hang in there and pass morale with a double 1! Boyz charge the Russes exploding one killing some Guardsmen and Orks and scoring crew shaken and weapon destroyed on the other.

We roll for next turn and game carries on but we have both had enough and call it a draw.

Summary

A good game by Shaun who is getting better with his tactics. This is his second time against Orks and this time kept as much distance from them as possible trying to blow those Battlewagons up with no matter what he had to leave them stranded in the open - even glancing armour 14 those Battlewagons are open topped which can still wreck them . He did well dropping double toughness strength weapons on the Nobz though the cybork bodies were just too tough! He also remembered it was a objective game this time, lol, and kept the Vendetta back to last minute turbo boost which helped contesting the objective.

My Ork list I think needs fine tuning a bit more. Battlewagons are cool but really only survive thanks to the KFF as they are open topped which can be a issue. I need more anti tank at range as two Lootas don't cut it so I think I am going to drop a Nobz unit and Battlewagon, probably the elites one. I'll add another Loota unit keep some Nobz to merge into the other and then add some Warbuggies and rokkits into the Boyz units. The Battlewagons I'll add red paint job which I think will be useful for tank shocking and also boarding planks as I really could have done with those this game when I failed to open tanks up with the deffrollas.

I also made a mistake tank shocking. I didn't realise that if you ram another vehicle if you fail to explode it you can't move on. I did this twice so the Manticore shouldn't have blown up though the other Chimera which took two tank shocks wouldn't have made any difference as the Battlewagon which tank shocked it again in the same turn popped it. Definately worth taking note as can be a bring difference in units getting destroyed and position of units been placed.

Very good report as usual Mercer. One thing I like to do against Tank Shock from the BW is opt to DoG. That close to Orks you are probably dead and a single auto hitting Meltas shot will take out the BW on anything other than a 1 if it Pens.

Great report.

To the previous poster, keep in mind when you DoG against a BW with Deff Rolla, that unit automatically will take 2d6 S10 hits regardless of destroying the BW.

IG is such a tough matchup with BW Orks. Good to see some reasonable success with the Orks.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Deffrollas are pretty cool though they was actually tank shocking Chimeras so I guess I should have put ram so meltas wouldn't have been any use here.

There was no death or glory to do as the tank shocking was actually ramming against Chimeras only . Guard definately are a tough match and I'll be modifying my list to account for that number of vehicles. I'll be adding another Loota unit and two Warbuggies along with boarding planks and red paint job on the Battlewagons but I will be using part of a Nob unit (merging with other) and a Battlewagon. When I write any list I always have in mind if it can beat mech Guard as I believe they are one of the toughest builds out there due to all the tanks and fire power they can pack.

The Deffrollas are great against tanks, I was referencing more the nightmare that can happen when the Rolla/Ram wreck the tank (and keep rolling through to another and another) Since you have to disembark, you can do so many times in such a way that it lines you up to get tank shocked when the wagon keeps rolling on through the exploded mess.

The 2d6 S10 hits can be tough but imo that veteran squad is dead already if the orks are that close.

Can the deffrolla tank shock a unit that has bailed out a exploded tank? I know the tank shock has been declared a path, but I guess you don't say targets you just say I'm going thata way! lol.

Totally agree on the Veterans been dead
