No, they have ways of seeing your PMs.

They can get them through the administrator, Lego the Mighty. The downside is, if they have to do that, not only are they annoyed and will ban you, but they will overnight a bag of concentrated wiener dog poop to your last known address.

We do not have easy access to examine private messages for the reason that they are supposed to be private. Of course, we can look at them when absolutely necessary.

In general your first recourse if someone is being inappropriate towards you using PMs is to stop responding to them immediately and delete their PMs on sight if you can't resist responding. We also highly suggest putting that person on 'ignore' in the main forums as well so you will essentially stop having interactions with them.

95% of the time, if you stop responding to someone's attempt to annoy you, they will give up fairly quickly and go away.

In those odd situations where ignoring someone's PMs doesn't stop them from continuing to send you PMs, THAT is when you should be contacting the administration to step in.

As much as an alert function would be nice and easy, for the few times that stuff like receiving inappropriate message happens, I doubt it would be worth the effort to program in.

As Yakface said, ignoring people who do send those messages is the best way to get it to stop. If they know you aren't going to respond or get aggrivated by their messages they'll get bored spending the time sending them in the first place. Meanwhile you can send Yakface or Legoburner a PM informing them of whats going on and if necessary they can look into it.

Just remember, if you respond to them in the same manner then it will not only escalate the problem but may also land you in trouble if they then complain.

I've known it in other places where someone will send inappropriate messages that while bad are not breaching any rules and as soon as the person receiving them responds with inappropriate content such as swearing they notify the admins/owners to try and get them banned. Not that I'm saying it happens on dakka, but it really wouldn't suprise me.
