Subject: Starting BFG Tyranids... What Other Models Are There?

I've played the Tryanids as my 40K force, and I really like them. And when I came across these models:
Goroloth and the smaller Goroloth Drone, from Reaper Minis.
I knew that the time had come to build myself a BFG fleet, with these bad boys as Hive Ships. I know that a lot of people convert from their bitz box, but I'm also looking for other models that might make good substitutes. Any suggestions?

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

I scratch built almost all my stuff from GW Warrior and Gaunt bits. Check out my photo album to see shots of the fleet.
If you want to just buy stuff though Iron Crown used to put out some nice silent death figs that would work well for your escorts or Kraken (you'll probably need to hit up Ebay for these now though.) The Muskelunge, Manta, Squidge and Muckworm would be my recommendations for a cool bug fleet.

I would DIY either squid or insectoid nids. Squid you homescculpt, it doesnt matter if you have poor sculpting skills. If you can form blobs of putty and roll them into tentacles and stick them on another blob of putty you can make a nid fleet.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. |

Try checking ebay and buy some carapace bits from the larger sprues. that should get you started quite nicely. trygon heads would work too. quite a lot of options out there, and all of them tasty. spacefleet was the game before bfg and they had nid models too. they go for rock bottom prices on ebay too:

hope it helps

Dodging classes and work, I've managed to collect and paint up an acceptable fleet, although several of the escorts still need painting. I've got a thousand point, sixteen-model list... but I was painting first and adding up the points later.
Splinter Fleet Mordggian, as it currently stands. An official Hive Ship. The snail-like guys are Phalons from Ground Zero Games' Full Thrust. I like them, they make very good Capital ships and the little guys are excellent drones. Top left is a Shadow Scout with the tentacles put on backwards. I thought it came out kind of cool.
On the right a Phalon Carrrier. The shells have these wonderful swooping patterns on them, and I had to emphasize them. On the left is a Phalon Corvette, which will be an escort drone. The middle is a little guy I found from Reaper Minis: the Rift Blights, which are sooo cool as tentacle drones I can't stand it. They come in two flavors: Spaghetti, and Spaghetti with Meat.
A Phalon Battleship on the right, and I'm kind of pleased by the way I brought out the pattern in the shell. To the left is a Rift Blight. These guys painted up very nicely, although I'm definitely a better painter than photographer. In the back is that Shadow Scout.
Three Phalon cruisers (two heavy and a battlecruiser) that are going to substitute for torpedo Kraken. I think the camera focused on the hive ship's tentacles, instead of the other ships.
Undoubtedly my best shot... one of the Rift Blights. You can see the little teeth on the tentacles and everything.
Spaghetti with meat. I can't turn this guy into a synapse creature, which its too bad.

Nice looking nid fleet you have there! That is some very creative use of non-GW models for it, too.

I like the options posted. I build a 2000pt fleet on my own out pf tyranid bits and it was pretty simple and didn't take long. I like knowing that if there is a type of ship I would like, I can just make it.
I will most likely be writing up an article on how to make quick custom tyranid ships out or just warrior and gaunt bits. Would this be helpful to you? If so, I will do it quicker rather than later.
