So Malifaux looks like a fun game to play. I am wondering though how many models does it take to play and on average how much does it cost to build a Malifuax crew ?

Depends hevily on which crew you choose.

Most tournements run at 35 SS

A starter box has anwhere from 16 SS to 25 SS worth of models in it, and your allowed to take up to 8 SS to help influance the game.

Generally speaking you can get a 35 SS force out of a starter box and a few blister.

Cheap...total cost depends on blister/box and where you buy.

If you shop around you can prolly get a 35 SS force for between $50-$75

Now that would be a full army at 35SS but not real options to switch out.

To get a tournament force Malifaux is prolly one of the cheapest good skirmish games on the market.

Oh ok. I plan to buy all my stuff from wayland games. How many models does a standard force have in it ?

From my experience it can range from 4 expensive ones to about 6 or 7 cheap units.

This depends entirelly on the crew your running. I can field a crew of 4 models or I can field a crew that in the end needs 20 models. It really depends on which master you pick.

Overall though its price is fairly standard for a skirmish game.

Average force size is usually between 6 to 10 on average.

You can go to extremes both most will fall in that range. Usually you will need your casters box set plus 1 or 2 blisters to get the full force.

From what I've heard, Resurrectionists (undead) can summon models a lot, so some of those masters can be model-heavy (especially Nicodemus). These models are summoned from battlefield corpses, and even if you're not hiring those models initially, having them will allow for more options.

There are also certain masters that allow you to choose things outside one's faction: Marcus (Beastmaster for Arcanists) can hire anything designated a "beast". This throws the gate pretty wide-open for other company's models!

your crews will generally vary depending upon the faction, lumped loosely
Guild, semi-elite. most crews will be 6-8 models, although there is potential for the crew to get very big
Ressers: big crews, almost all of them will require additional models as you summon them over the course of the game
Arcanists: semi-elite. 6-8 models again with the exception of Ramos who can summon additional models over the course of the game
Neverborn: Elite. generally crews will be quite small around 5-6 models. you really won't require many additional models.
Outcasts: much variation here however generally all the crews are large, except for the Viktorias which is small

Here's the numbers you should care about, moonshine:

Crew Box: ~$35
Rules Manual: $15
Total: ~$50

And you're playing. Full 25ss games. Not a lot of tournaments are run at 25ss, but who cares? Anyone who plays Malifaux will play a 25ss game with you--it's not like playing Battlebox games of WM. It's a level people actually play at.

The only caveat is a coupla crew boxes come in under 25ss, so look at which ones you want, and then come ask us how many ss it is.

The majority of the crew boxes come in under 25ss...

If you want to play with just starter boxes, play at 20 points and don't let anyone take a summoning master.

To give you an example. My favorite master is Somer Teeth, he is one of the least competitive masters in the game. At 35 points I run;

Somer Teeth
Hog Whisperer x 2
Warpig x 2
Bayou Gremlin x 1
Giant Masqueto x 1

By the end of the game I need all of those models plus;

3 more Masquetos
Atleast 5 more Gremlins
And the odd Piglet or two

There are some masters out there that require alot of models. If your looking to play this game cheaply I suggest staying away from the summoning masters.

I suppose I meant that you can play 25ss games with the majority of them, because you just take the leftover soulstones...

You can only take a maximum of 8 SS including the SS your master comes with.

I know, dude! And with the majority of boxes, you can play a 25ss game.

Just remember, you will end up buying additional models, regardless of which box you purchase.

Ie. Totems at the very least, and more minions as you increase your crew in order to combat different opponents.

This is pretty accurate. Though it really depends on which master you take. For instance, if you go Neverborn and get Pandora's box, you're good to go for awhile. Whereas Lilith's box would need at least a blister of Young Nephilim.

I picked up my Vickies, 3 Ronin, Hans, Taelor, and Misaki for about $40 on ebay, brand new.

Thats enough to play 35SS games with a choice on who to take.

I bought the nice puppet fate cards at $10, though a regular plain ole deck of cards will work.

I'd recommend a Convict Gunslinger at some point, as well as a Student of Conflict. They'll flesh out your Vik crew quite nicely.

Well, I'll tell you how I managed it:

Roughly $250 snagged me both of the big rulebooks, LJ's box, Sonnia's box, an blister of Witchling Stalkers, Lucius, a Guard Captain, a blister of Guild Guard, Ryle, a blister of Ronin, Perdirta, 3 blisters of 30mm scenic bases, a blister of accessories, and a blister of coffins.

Not necessarily in that order.

What? No Retribution ranking track?

Very nice score mate!

I have almost the exact same crew...
