Hi all,

My friends and I, largely thanks to recent GW decisions, have decided to branch out from our usual WFRP/Mordheim/40k/WFHB/Necromunda games and try something a little different. Since my friend is a massive fan of Steampunk we have plumbed for Malifaux!

Being the Loremaster of the group (the only one who seems to read the rules!) I have purchased the big version of the rulebook so I can find out whats going on background wise as well as reading the rules. Next week I'm planning to have an introductory game session to get the group up to speed on the various rules/characters before they splash out on buying all the great minis available. My question is... what SS level (is level the right word?) would be good for introductions & any crews to definitely include or exclude from the start? I'm against pre-determining the complete crews for them as it seems a pretty important strategy decision but any pointers or tips I can give the players to make their decisions easier will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

At our club we have just started Malifaux as well and we have just been playing with the Faction Box sets which I believe has 21 SS in it for all the one I have bought/played against.

I'm not to sure on this but I think extra SS you don't use go towards SS pool if I remember correctly, like if you played 25 SS game but only used 21 SS on models you would get 4 bonus SS at the start of the game.

The rules in the Original big rulebook aren't the current rules...

The rules in the smaller Rules Maual are the current rules, you can either buy the book or download a free PDF copy from Wyrds website.

My suggestion would be to run at 20 to 25 SS, the starter boxes contain anywhere from 16 to 23 SS worth of models. Your allowed to carry a total of 8 unspent SS into the game to help you influance things.

WTF seriously!?! The one with the hanged on the front cover? So much for the helpful FLGS!

We haven't bought any of the models yet, which sounds stupid when you consider the main reason we are getting into this is because of the models! We will be using proxies to try out crews and get a feel for the game. Thanks for the SS advice I'll limit it to 25 max then, that will make for a quicker game right? (less models)

Also, can Malifaux have more than 2 players gaming at once? At work and Wryds' site is blocked so can't look at anything Malifaux related!

The original rulebook still gives you the overall jist of the game, the problem was that there was 17 pages of errata and another 15 of FAQ's. Basically what they did with the rules manual was to incorporate the Errata, FAQ and a mild rewrite into a new book. However the rules manual does not have the first wave of model stats. Your also going to find Rising Powers useful as it includes new models and introduces henchmen. There should be a third book out by Gencon.

Don't forget your also going to need a deck of Fate Cards.

Technically you can have more then two players in one game, however the game really isn't designed that way, especially with the way the scoring system works. You'll have more fun playing 2 player games.

If you want to try the game out cheap-like, to decide if it's for you (and that seems to be what you're doing), you don't need a fate deck*. You can play the game with a regular deck of cards. The book tells you what card suits = Malifaux suits.

The new $15 Rules Manual is also super-nice, and condenses the game into one small book. Again, though, if you're just trying out the game, using the model stats in book 1, nothing's going to break substantially or turn you off Malifaux because you're not using the errata/updated rules. Just beware that if you play games outside you're group, you're going to need the new rules, and if any models seem wonky to you, hold off judgment until you see the update stat cards (which are available for free right here, under Stat Cards. Not everything from book 1 has changed, so if you don't see some models that are in book 1, they haven't changed a'tall).

Too bad about that [F]LGS worker--he obviously doesn't know the product he's selling, which is a bummer.

*although they are helpful, and are useful for more than aesthetics--they give you the Malifaux suits, and damage tier right on the card, so you won't have to look it up. I've only met one Malifaux player that uses a regular deck (which, again, is just fine, but is slower until you internalize the rules).
