Hey everybody!
I've been a LOTR gamer for a few years and a mate has convinced me to get into WH40k. I'm a member on the One Ring forum for lord of the rings as well. I'm not sure what army to collect yet, but leaning towards either Eldar or Tyranids. Or Marines. Not sure at all really! 
This looks like a good forum, looking forward to getting to know people on here.

Welcome dakkanaut! Heres the idea behind each of the armies you mentioned, you can either:
Be conquistadors of space and scour the galaxy of anything that ins't a human or monkey in the name of the god emperor (even though hes technical dead and doesn't tell you to do these things)
Be horrible creatures on a never ending search for more things to slaughter so they can gather DNA to make themselves MORE horrible.
Or be a race ancients who thought they were the greatest until they had a bad dream and blew up their own planet, opened up the warp, birthed the Horrible chaos god Slaneesh, and generally mucked things up for everyone.
