In this D6G megasode we manage to interview the men behind two of the hotest up-and-coming miniature gaming companies.
Up first Eric Johns from Wyrd Miniatures brings us up to date on what's happening with Malifaux and beyond. What can we expect from the new rule book, what kind of hotness will be at GenCon, and just how cool is all that new Terraclips terrain anyway?
Later Neil Fawcett from Spartan Games is on the show. We ask him what's going on with all three lines of Spartan products: Uncharted Seas, Firestorm Armada, and Dystopian Wars. They've also got a lot of new hotness coming to Gencon 2011 and Neil isn't shy about telling you exactly what it is.
But we're not done with Spartan Games once Neil hangs up. We then dive into the new land units for Dystopain Wars. How does the game play on land?
As if all that wasn't enough, we announce the winners of the Wargamma haiku contest and don't miss a special 'extended edition' of Words from Wales... megasode indeed!
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- The Hollywood Minute
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- Words from Wales
- & More

Oh man, I still haven't gotten around to listening to Ep. 82 yet. Blasted night school! I think I might just have to skip 82 for now and go right to this episode, as I'm dying to hear the interview with Neil, as well as your thoughts on the DW land game.

Been Around the Block

Gah...I went on vacation, and have fallen behind. I just listened to the last "Lost Chapter", and came on to comment on that, only to find there's another regular episode up! Well, I'll download that and comment later, I suppose, but I did want to comment on Wise Man's Fear
(possible spoilers ahead)
First, I like the concept of reviewing an individual book, although in this case it was more of a review of the series (all two books of it), as you didn't really start talking about WMF until 1/2 hour in. I look forward to future book reviews - I've already taken a couple of book suggestions from you guys, the prime example being Jim Butcher's Alera series (I'd already been reading Dresden). Not sure what your rule on spoilers should be - I was ok with how you treated WMF, since it's been out a while, but you probably want to wait 6 months or so before tackling A Dance With Dragons...
A couple of comments about the first book, and some things you mentioned. First, I thought the Chandrian were all set to kill Kvothe, and then their enemy (the something-or-another knights?) appeared. Kvothe didn't see them, but I thought the head Chandrian told one of the underlings to kill Kvothe, and then suddenly stopped and said something like "they're coming...we must be away"...or something to that effect.
Second, I don't think the Chandrian are some evil-which-must-not-be-spoken-about (i.e. like Voldemort). I think that it's rather more like they're legend has completely drifted to "fairly tale". It would almost be like you or I enrolling in a university and when choosing a course of study, saying something like "I want to research everything about hyper-intelligent wolves. Particularly ones that pose as grandmothers or blow down pig's houses." You'd get laughed off of the grounds...that's how it is with Kvothe if he tells people he wants to research the Chandrian. (That's not a perfect analogy, but I think you get my point).
As for the Harry Potter similarities. I have to say that when Russ first opined this a few episodes back, I was laughing along with Craig and Raef. But, when you list it out point by point, Russ...it's kind of hard to dismiss. Still, I never once thought of Harry Potter when reading these books. I think I come down in the middle - there are clearly similarities, but I don't think there is any direct copying of story. I enjoyed the Harry Potter books for what they were...but they were clearly kids books (or at least young adult) - the Kingkiller Chronicle books are clearly adult reads.
All in all, I find myself agreeing with most closely with Craig. (In fact, I think we had a short discussion on these boards about WMF on these boards several episodes ago). I'm really enjoying the series, but I thought book 2 took some steps forward as well as back. As far as steps forward - a broader view of the world, with the Maer and the Adem, that was great. The not-so-great stuff was everything you mentioned - the complete cutting out of the trial and sea voyage, the jarring disconnect between his time with Felurian and the rest of the novel(s), and the burgeoning perfection of Kvothe.
It seems likely that the story is getting more complicated (what's in that box that the Maer's wife has???) and I wonder if it will only be 3 books. "Day 3" could just finish the telling of his tale to catch up to "present" day. Succeeding book(s) could just move the story forward from the Inn and his role as "Kote" (which I pronounce "Ko-tay" for some reason). We'll see.

The nightmare editions have all been revealed. I don't like them too much, so I'm happy that I won't be tempted to pick them up.
All the prices and images are located in this thread.

I'm MUCH more interested in the avatars and alt sculpts than the Nightmare Editions right now.

I need to pile on to the Words From Wales praise...I found the story interesting, and you told it very well!
So, I just got through the interview with Spartan Neil and the run-down of DW land battles. Interesting stuff as usual, although from the sound of it the Antarticans were revealed a little sooner than expected . I am really psyched to play a ground battle now! I should get the chance this Sunday; there is a big combined land-naval game planned at the Game Vault in Fredricksburg, VA that I am attending.
One thing I was wondering; I've seen a lot of comments on the SG forums about how bombards are overly powerful on the land side. Have you found this to be true? I have a hard time seeing it; granted, they throw decent dice, but they don't strike me as over-powering given their defensive stats. Also, is using your own bombards for counter-battery work a valid tactic in your experience?

As is mine... At least Russ liked my entry, and the engineer is the only one I care about anyway.
Actually, I would be in geekly heaven to share a pint of Guiness with Raef and Craig in McNerdigan's pub, chatting about games, books, and the antics of our children. Well, I could probably still enjoy it without the chatting. Or Raef and Craig. Or being in McNerdigan's. Hell, I just need to get some Guiness...

DW Bombards: I love how they work. And how fragile they are. Perfect combo. I wonder if folks in the forums over at SG are adding in some air power with their land units? I'd think that would take care of the bombard issue if it really bothered someone.
kcummins wrote:As is mine... At least Russ liked my entry, and the engineer is the only one I care about anyway.
So either an engineer is a better judge of a Haiku than an English teacher...or an engineer writes poetry only an engineer could love...
hmmm... Sounds like a problem the Vogon's have dealt with for centuries.

Yet another fine episodes for the books.
I'm hoping my shop gets a copy of the Ares Project. It sounds like it's definitely worth a try.

Your housebroken welchman appears to be overdosing on Drama! which is entertaining
The writing job for...someone...sounds interesting.
I would really have liked to ask Wyrd what their central idea of Malifaux is. Is it meant to be a tournament system? Or is it more of a narrative, almost RPG-ish system?

They've been tightening up the rules as much as possible and have recently released tournament docs, so I think they want to have a Malifaux tournament scene develop. As much as it's a character driven game, I think the level of complexity of rules for each miniature lends itself more towards the tournament player who's focused on list building much more than the narrative player.
Both have their place in Malifaux, but if you start looking at all the possibilites when list building the game is geared towards getting you to buy as many miniatures as you can to give you as many options as possible. For example, you select your mission and objectives before you select your crew. So ideally you'd want to have a lot of variety in your collection to be able to handle whatever tasks you need to accomplish in any given game. Yes, you can just collect a few models to build a themey list and play the game and have a great time, but that defeats the purpose of how the game is designed to work.

Well Owen, I guess housebroken means you don't pee on the rug? That is a plus in my book.
Words from Wales was great.
The episode in general was excellent as usual.
Concerning Lost Chapter 13:
I like the looking back format. It is nice to hear where these old games stand without taking time away from the new material in the main podcast.
As far as Whoremachine... it sounds like a game system I would have a very hard time explaining to any non-gamer friends... or gamer friends for that matter.
